Book Synopsis Deformation Processes in Minerals, Ceramics and Rocks by : D.J. Barber
Download or read book Deformation Processes in Minerals, Ceramics and Rocks written by D.J. Barber and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph has its origins in a two-day meeting with the same title held in London, England in the spring of 1987. The idea for the meeting came from members of the UK Mineral and Rock Physics Group. It was held under the auspices of, and made possible by the generous support of, the Mineralogical Society of Great Britain and Ireland. Additional financial assistance was provided by ECC International pIc and the Cookson Group pIc. The aims of the London meeting were to survey the current state of knowledge about deformation processes in non-metallic materials and to bring together both experts and less experienced Earth scientists and ceramicists who normally had little contact but shared common interests in deformation mechanisms. This monograph has similar aims and, indeed, most of its authors were keynote speakers at the meeting. Consequently, most of the contributions contain a review element in addition to the presentation and discussion of new results. In adopting this format, the editors hope that the monograph will provide a valuable state-of-the-art sourcebook, both to active researchers and also to graduate students just starting in the relevant fields.
Book Synopsis Salt Tectonics by : Martin P. A. Jackson
Download or read book Salt Tectonics written by Martin P. A. Jackson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-06 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Salt tectonics is the study of how and why salt structures evolve and the three-dimensional forms that result. A fascinating branch of geology in itself, salt tectonics is also vitally important to the petroleum industry. Covering the entire scale from the microscopic to the continental, this textbook is an unrivalled consolidation of all topics related to salt tectonics: evaporite deposition and flow, salt structures, salt systems, and practical applications. Coverage of the principles of salt tectonics is supported by more than 600 color illustrations, including 200 seismic images captured by state-of-the-art geophysical techniques and tectonic models from the Applied Geodynamics Laboratory at the University of Texas, Austin. These combine to provide a cohesive and wide-ranging insight into this extremely visual subject. This is the definitive practical handbook for professional geologists and geophysicists in the petroleum industry, an invaluable textbook for graduate students, and a reference textbook for researchers in various geoscience fields.
Book Synopsis The Mechanical Behavior of Salt – Understanding of THMC Processes in Salt by : Manfred Wallner
Download or read book The Mechanical Behavior of Salt – Understanding of THMC Processes in Salt written by Manfred Wallner and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 661 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique opportunity to review the latest progress in an expanding area of interest: the Mechanical Behaviour of Salt. These Proceedings include over fifty papers and summaries describing the latest findings in ongoing studies from a number of research groups. For the 2007 conference, there was a particular focus on the understanding of thermal, mechanical, hydraulic and chemical coupled processes (THMC). Such processes are of specific interest when considering advanced problems in waste disposal, storage and mining. The book includes a number of themes: - laboratory and in-situ investigations modelling, e.g. derivation of constitutive equations - numerical computations and prediction of long-term behaviour - THMC processes in mining projects, storage and permanent disposal - case studies - geology - mining and storage applications and abandonment The International Conferences on the Mechanical Behaviour of Salt have a long tradition, being initiated in 1981 at The Pennsylvania State University, USA. The present conference, the sixth of the series, took place in Hannover, Germany, in May 2007. The conference brought together mining engineers, researchers, and university professors interested in the mechanical behaviour of salt, mostly from Europe and beyond.
Book Synopsis Flow and Fracture of Rocks by : Hugh Corey Heard
Download or read book Flow and Fracture of Rocks written by Hugh Corey Heard and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 1972 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 16 (The Griggs Volume). David Tressel Griggs was born October 6, 1911, in Columbus, Ohio. His parents were Robert Fiske and Laura Amelia Tressel Griggs. His father was a widely known professor of botany and a leading ecologist and environmental conservationist at a time when these viewpoints were less familiar than they are today. David was an undergraduate at Ohio State University in 1930 when he participated in a National Geographic Society expedition, led by his father, to the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes. This Alaskan experience and the encouragement he received from a gifted and enthusiastic teacher, Professor Edmund M. Spieker, led him to choose for his life work the application of physics to the problems of the earth. After a year of graduate studies in geology at Ohio State, David moved on in 1933 to Harvard, where a new progTam of high-pressure studies devoted to geophysical problems had just been initiated under the inspired guidance of Percy W. Bridgman, pre-eminent leader in the experimental exploration of the physics of very high pressures and in the philosophical analysis of the logical processes of scientific thinking.

Book Synopsis Application of Digital Image Correlation Technique in Experimental Study of the Creep Behavior and Time Dependent Damage of Natural Rock Salt by : Diansen Yang
Download or read book Application of Digital Image Correlation Technique in Experimental Study of the Creep Behavior and Time Dependent Damage of Natural Rock Salt written by Diansen Yang and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper presents an experimental study on the creep behavior of a natural rock salt by means of digital image correlation (DIC) technique. To determine the creep rate and understand the creep mechanism of the rock salt, the time-dependent behavior of the material was studied at various scales (100 ?m-1 cm) under different mechanical loading conditions. The results showed that the rock salt deformed at low constant stress. The strain rate at the macroscopic scale (cm) was about 10-9 s-1 at 11 MPa and it increased by an order of magnitude at 18 MPa. The strain rate at the mesoscopic scale (mm) depended on the microstructure, the boundary of subgrains deformed more rapidly than the subgrain, and the strain rate reached 10-7 s-1 at the interface of grains. The damage was identified by analyzing the full-field strain map and it was mainly caused by the open of cracks and it developed with the propagation of the cracks during creep tests.

Download or read book Creep Mechanics written by Josef Betten and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-01-17 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides a short survey of recent advances in the mathematical modelling of the mechanical behavior of anisotropic solids under creep conditions, including principles, methods, and applications of tensor functions. Some examples for practical use are discussed, as well as experiments by the author to test the validity of the modelling. The monograph offers an overview of other experimental investigations in creep mechanics. Rules for specifying irreducible sets of tensor invariants, scalar coefficients in constitutive and evolutional equations, and tensorial interpolation methods are also explained. The text has been re-examined and improved throughout.
