Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Creating Our Own, anthropologist Zoila S. Mendoza explores the early-twentieth-century development of the “folkloric arts”—particularly music, dance, and drama—in Cuzco, Peru, revealing the central role that these expressive practices played in shaping ethnic and regional identities. Mendoza argues that the folkloric productions emerging in Cuzco in the early twentieth century were integral to, rather than only a reflection of, the social and political processes underlying the development of the indigenismo movement. By demonstrating how Cuzco’s folklore emerged from complex interactions between artists and intellectuals of different social classes, she challenges the idea that indigenismo was a project of the elites. Mendoza draws on early-twentieth-century newspapers and other archival documents as well as interviews with key artistic and intellectual figures and their descendants. She offers vivid descriptions of the Peruvian Mission of Incaic Art, a tour undertaken by a group of artists from Cuzco, at their own expense, to represent Peru to Bolivia, Argentina, and Uruguay in 1923–24, as well as of the origins in the 1920s of the Qosqo Center of Native Art, the first cultural institution dedicated to regional and national folkloric art. She highlights other landmarks, including both The Charango Hour, a radio show that contributed to the broad acceptance of rural Andean music from its debut in 1937, and the rise in that same year of another major cultural institution, the American Art Institute of Cuzco. Throughout, she emphasizes the intricate local, regional, national, and international pressures that combined to produce folkloric art, especially the growing importance of national and international tourism in Cuzco. Book excerpt: Young adults with intellectual disability tell the story of their own experience of higher education How do students with intellectual disability experience higher education? Creating Our Own Lives addresses this question through the eyes of participants themselves. In relating their experiences and aspirations, these student perspectives mount a powerful challenge to assumptions that intellectual disability is best met with protection or segregation. Taken together, the essays expose and contradict the inherently ableist claim that individuals with intellectual disability cannot be reliable storytellers. Instead, their deeply informative stories serve as a corrective narrative. The first of the four sections, “Laying the Foundation: Why Everyone Belongs in College,” focuses on belonging and inclusion; the second, “Opening Up Possibilities: Overcoming Doubt and Uncertainty,” conveys the optimism of this generation of advocates through stories of personal hardship, hopeful perseverance, and triumph over adversity; the third, “Inclusion as Action: Diversifying Student Experiences,” supports the understanding of diverse student experiences in inclusive higher education; and the fourth, “Supporting Growth: Peer Mentoring and Advice,” offers guidance to those reimagining and creating educational spaces. Students with disabilities belong in higher education. Not only does this book serve as an important record of students enrolled in inclusive higher education programs, it is also an unprecedented resource, packed with information and inspiration both for parents seeking opportunities for their children and for individuals with intellectual disability who aspire to attend college. Book excerpt: Creating Their Own Image marks the first comprehensive history of African-American women artists, from slavery to the present day. Using an analysis of stereotypes of Africans and African-Americans in western art and culture as a springboard, Lisa E. Farrington here richly details hundreds ofimportant works--many of which deliberately challenge these same identity myths, of the carnal Jezebel, the asexual Mammy, the imperious Matriarch--in crafting a portrait of artistic creativity unprecedented in its scope and ambition. In these lavishly illustrated pages, some of which feature imagesnever before published, we learn of the efforts of Elizabeth Keckley, fashion designer to Mary Todd Lincoln; the acclaimed sculptor Edmonia Lewis, internationally renowned for her neoclassical works in marble; and the artist Nancy Elizabeth Prophet and her innovative teaching techniques. We meetLaura Wheeler Waring who portrayed women of color as members of a socially elite class in stark contrast to the prevalent images of compliant maids, impoverished malcontents, and exotics "others" that proliferated in the inter-war period. We read of the painter Barbara Jones-Hogu's collaboration onthe famed Wall of Respect, even as we view a rare photograph of Hogu in the process of painting the mural. Farrington expertly guides us through the fertile period of the Harlem Renaissance and the "New Negro Movement," which produced an entirely new crop of artists who consciously imbued their workwith a social and political agenda, and through the tumultuous, explosive years of the civil rights movement. Drawing on revealing interviews with numerous contemporary artists, such as Betye Saar, Faith Ringgold, Nanette Carter, Camille Billops, Xenobia Bailey, and many others, the second half ofCreating Their Own Image probes more recent stylistic developments, such as abstraction, conceptualism, and post-modernism, never losing sight of the struggles and challenges that have consistently influenced this body of work. Weaving together an expansive collection of artists, styles, andperiods, Farrington argues that for centuries African-American women artists have created an alternative vision of how women of color can, are, and might be represented in American culture. From utilitarian objects such as quilts and baskets to a wide array of fine arts, Creating Their Own Imageserves up compelling evidence of the fundamental human need to convey one's life, one's emotions, one's experiences, on a canvas of one's own making.

Book excerpt: SWITCHWORDS are super powerful words that can bypass your conscious mind and directly influence your subconscious mind. They are very easy and fun to use. Create the life of your dreams with Swichwords. My ex-boss was a short, blood-sucking vampire. His cold eyes and a steely glare that could kill a fly on the spot. Many believed that he has been possessed by demons and attending demonic sessions. When he asked you a question, he would move his head to one side and ask weird questions and shout and scream. I would work my ass off to get clients not only for me but also for his business. He always wanted more and more clients and increased business revenue without wanting to spend any of his dimes on marketing and advertising. On top of it, the receptionist did everything she could to repel any good client and kept offering them her own services. She was grimacing on virtually all clients. Despite all of this, I kept working hard, did cold calling every day and invested my own money on getting the leads and draining my savings account. I couldn't sleep at night from all the mental abuse and physical exhaustion. Also, at that time I was interested in a guy who promised me collaboration and promotion of my business. Of course, it didn't happen and worse than that, he chose to help a prostitute get some work and promotion. I had nobody to turn to so I turned to alcohol for help to soothe the pain. I went through a mental breakdown and wanted to commit suicide many times. I had no hope and didn't know how to get out of the black magic spell. One morning when I woke up in pain and covered in blood and emotionally, spiritually and physically depleted with broken glass on the floor I knew something is gotta change NOW! I couldn't get up and passed out. I started to see the light at the end of the tunnel when I saw the flashing light of the ambulance. Who did that? I DID. Who does that? YOU DO. Up to your eyeballs in debt. Just to have your name on the business door. The SS spiritual guru had a diamond ring. I called it a "blood diamond". Because I knew every bit of the blood, sweat, and tears it took to get new clients for the business. He would twist that ring around his finger the whole time he leered at me and talked down to you. I lived with my neck under the SS boss boot until the day I discovered and applied the secrets mentioned in this book and my other books REALITY CREATION SECRETS and SWITCHWORDS MIRACLES. Spending thousands of pounds on the law of attraction training and books did not work. Applying ancient knowledge from my books, changing my beliefs, applying the right strategies and choosing my own preferred reality did work. In 6 weeks I went from 15-2- leads per week to 50-100 per week. And I went from chasing and begging the clients to actually clients chasing and begging me to get an appointment. Fast forard a coule of years... I own international businesses that are profitable, have enough quality leads, clients waiting list and my life is happy and peaceful. It's the ONE Decision I made that made it happen. I started investing in myself and studies reality creation secrets. And from then my life has completely changed because now I have multiple thriving online businesses and have a partner who adores me, loves me and is very proud of me. I went from 0 to hero within a few months just applying the simple wisdom and techniques mentioned in the amazing book. Your life can change too, it is just one decision away from you. Kick-Ass In Life and In Business!
