Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pain management is a significant role of the bedside nurse in the acute care setting. Organizations are exploring resources at the practice level to improve patient satisfaction related to pain management in the form of Hospital Consumers Assessment of Healthcare Provider Systems (HCAHPS) scores. The purpose of this project was to evaluate the impact of a pain resource nurse program on patient satisfaction related to pain management. The following clinical question was utilized to guide a literature search: Does implementation of a unit-based pain resource nurse program that is focused on pain assessment, intervention and management improve HCAHPS scores in relation to pain management? This project utilized a quantitative descriptive pre and post intervention design to analyze HCAHPS scores from a random sample of patients following implementation of a pain resource nurse program on the orthopedic/neurology unit at an acute care hospital. The pain resource nurse curriculum was developed from current literature and prepared with a foundation in the Knowles' assumptions of adult learning. Roger's diffusions of innovations theory provided a framework for implementation. The results of the project indicate there was no statistical significance between the pre and post intervention groups in the HCAHPS survey responses for the questions in the pain management domain. The questions evaluated were: (1) During this hospital stay, how often was your pain controlled? (p=0.365) and (2) During this hospital stay, how often did the staff do everything they could to help with your pain? (p= 0.575) The results of the project add to the broad area of nursing knowledge in pain management and provide an example of implementation of a pain management resource at the practice level.

From the perspectives and actual voices of nurses with disabilities, nurse leaders, nurse administrators, and patients, the book identifies nurses with disabilities (including sensory, musculoskeletal, emotional, and mental health issues), discusses why they choose to leave nursing or hide their disabilities, and analyzes how their disabilities may influence career choices. Providing evidence from health research is necessary but not sufficient for the provision of optimal care and so knowledge translation (KT), the scientific study of methods for closing the knowledge-to-action gap and of the barriers and facilitators inherent in the process, is gaining significance. Knowledge Translation in Health Care explains how to use research findings to improve health care in real life, everyday situations. The authors define and describe knowledge translation, and outline strategies for successful knowledge translation in practice and policy making. The book is full of examples of how knowledge translation models work in closing the gap between evidence and action. Written by a team of authors closely involved in the development of knowledge translation this unique book aims to extend understanding and implementation worldwide. It is an introductory guide to an emerging hot topic in evidence-based care and essential for health policy makers, researchers, managers, clinicians and trainees.

Book excerpt: Building on the revolutionary Institute of Medicine reports To Err is Human and Crossing the Quality Chasm, Keeping Patients Safe lays out guidelines for improving patient safety by changing nurses' working conditions and demands. Licensed nurses and unlicensed nursing assistants are critical participants in our national effort to protect patients from health care errors. The nature of the activities nurses typically perform â€" monitoring patients, educating home caretakers, performing treatments, and rescuing patients who are in crisis â€" provides an indispensable resource in detecting and remedying error-producing defects in the U.S. health care system. During the past two decades, substantial changes have been made in the organization and delivery of health care â€" and consequently in the job description and work environment of nurses. As patients are increasingly cared for as outpatients, nurses in hospitals and nursing homes deal with greater severity of illness. Problems in management practices, employee deployment, work and workspace design, and the basic safety culture of health care organizations place patients at further risk. This newest edition in the groundbreaking Institute of Medicine Quality Chasm series discusses the key aspects of the work environment for nurses and reviews the potential improvements in working conditions that are likely to have an impact on patient safety.
