Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book Savoring memories of his 2018 solo pilgrimage across the Native sites of the Great Plains, a little at a time, every morsel full of riches, Chandra Lahiri eventually got to thinking of Crazy Horse and more so of the two women who played such a massively influential role in his life, even indirectly shaping the course of his career. His first love interest, Black Buffalo Woman, disappears from the pages of history shortly after the attempt on his life by her husband. His wife, Black Shawl, vanishes almost equally completely soon after his assassination at Fort Robinson. What became of them? How did their lives play out? Did they have descendants, perhaps living today? Did they ever find happiness again? Understandably, they have been of limited or no interest to historians over the years, living as they did in the gigantic shadow of the legendary Crazy Horse, whose story is the very stuff of sagas. It is somehow fitting that an entire mountain is required to build a modern-day memorial to him, and it is unlikely that the sculptors take much notice of the fauna at its base, far, far below the peak. These women have effectively become footnotes to his story, if they appear at all. Knowing what he now does of them, Chandra considers this historical oblivion grossly unfair and unjust after the impactful roles they played in the great warrior’s life. This is their story. About the Author Chandra Lahiri is an “Indian from India” who lives in the Sultanate of Oman. After many years as a global CEO, he now focuses on his lifelong passion for Native American heritage, especially of the northern Great Plains Nations. His wife is a Special Needs Educator in Oman, and his two sons live and work in the U.S.A. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 1881, Robert Justus Kleberg rode across the hot, dusty South Texas brush country to the palatial home of Capt. Richard King to consult with the cattle baron about attending to his legal affairs. On that same journey, the young lawyer also first laid eyes on Alice King, “Princess of the Wild Horse Desert.” Neither of their lives would ever be the same. Published for the first time in this book, the love letters written by Kleberg to Alice Gertrudis King provide a glimpse of the lives of two of the most influential people in Texas history. Editors Jane Clements Monday and Frances Brannen Vick have also provided generous documentation and annotation of these important primary documents from the Special Collections at Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi, affording historians and interested readers an insider’s view of one of the world’s greatest ranching empires as it transitioned from its founders to the next generation. Letters to Alice: Birth of the Kleberg-King-Ranch Dynasty represents the only existing collection of letters between any of the great Texas cattle barons and their wives. Although a great deal is already known about the ranch and its development, Monday and Vick present for the first time Robert Justus Kleberg’s personal perspective on his first meeting with Alice King, their early courtship, the difficulties obtaining her parents’ permission to marry, and the poignant time surrounding Captain King’s death.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From warrior women to female deities who control the cycle of life, female characters in Native American literature exhibit a social and spiritual empowerment that is quite different from the average Pocahontas we are used to seeing in mainstream literature. This work argues that a tribal construct of gender relations, where the relationship between male and female roles is complementary rather than hierarchical, accounts for the existence of these empowered female characters in Native American literature. Focusing on the work of four of the twentieth century's most famous Native American authors, Zitkala-Sa, Leslie Marmon Silko, Louise Erdrich and Sherman Alexie, Hollrah suggests that it is important to evaluate Native American literary female characters in a cultural paradigm that is less Euro-American and more compatible to the complementarity of Native American culture.
