Book excerpt: A study of the Late Permian dicynodont 'Diictodon' confirms suggestions that only one species, 'D. feliceps', can be presently recognized. The genus is characterized by features such as a palatal notch, a large dentary table with a medial cutting blade, and the absence of postcanine teeth. Numerous anatomical variations exist within 'Diictodon', but many appear biologically insignificant. However, there is a clear distinction between specimens having canine tusks and those lacking them, as tusked specimens are generally larger and more likely to develop a pineal boss. This probably reflects sexual dimorphism, with the tusked sex almost certainly being the male. A phylogenetic analysis of dicynodonts indicates that previous analyses are correct in identifying 'Robertia' as the sister-group of ' Diictodon' and 'Dicynodon' and 'Aulacephalodon ' as close relatives of 'Lystrosaurus'. However, the results suggest that 'Endothiodon', rather than 'Eodicynodon ', may be the most basal known dicynodont.

This book was released on 1988 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multituberculates are an extinct mammalian order that lived in Mesozoic and early Cenozoic eras. Lambdopsalis, a Paleocene multituberculate recovered in China, preserves cranial remains that allow in this study: (1) a description of its skull morphology; (2) a reconstruction of its nonfossilized structures such as the cranial nerve system and major cranial vasculature; (3) an analysis of functional adaptation of its auditory system; and (4) an interpretation of phylogenetic relationships within multituberculates themselves and among other major mammalian groups. Character analysis reveals that a number of previously used cranial features in reconstructions of mammalian phylogeny are unreliable. These include premaxillo-frontal contact, exclusion of septomaxilla from face, number of infraorbital foramina, extent of orbital exposure of palatine, presence versus absence of jugal, lacrimal, and parasphe-- noid, extent of cranial process of squamosal, and reduction of alisphenoid. The bulla-like structure of Lambdopsalis is the expanded vestibular apparatus, not an enlarged tympanic bulla. The expanded vestibular apparatus, flat incudomalleal joint, and absence of a well defined fossa muscularis minor in Lambdopsalis suggest that Lambdopsalis (possibly a burrower) adapted to low-frequency perception.

Book Synopsis Early Evolutionary History of the Synapsida by : Christian F. Kammerer
Download or read book Early Evolutionary History of the Synapsida written by Christian F. Kammerer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-09-20 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-mammalian synapsids were the dominant terrestrial vertebrates from the Late Carboniferous to the Middle Triassic and play a key role in understanding the origin and evolution of mammals. Despite these facts and the outstanding fossil record of the group, early synapsids remain obscure. This book showcases the full breadth of contemporary research on non-mammalian synapsids, ranging from taxonomy and phylogenetics to functional morphology, biogeography, paleoecology, and patterns of diversity. It also underscores the importance and potential of studying non-mammalian synapsid paleobiology in its own right, not just in the context of mammalian evolution.
Book Synopsis Tyrannosaurid Paleobiology by : J. Michael Parrish
Download or read book Tyrannosaurid Paleobiology written by J. Michael Parrish and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-05 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawn from a 2005 international symposium, these essays explore current tyrannosaurid current research and discoveries regarding Tyrannosaurus rex. The opening of an exhibit focused on “Jane,” a beautifully preserved tyrannosaur collected by the Burpee Museum of Natural History, was the occasion for an international symposium on tyrannosaur paleobiology. This volume, drawn from the symposium, includes studies of the tyrannosaurids Chingkankousaurus fragilis and “Sir William” and the generic status of Nanotyrannus; theropod teeth, pedal proportions, brain size, and craniocervical function; soft tissue reconstruction, including that of “Jane”; paleopathology and tyrannosaurid claws; dating the “Jane” site; and tyrannosaur feeding and hunting strategies. Tyrannosaurid Paleobiology highlights the far ranging and vital state of current tyrannosaurid dinosaur research and discovery. “Despite being discovered over 100 years ago, Tyrannosaurus rex and its kin still inspire researchers to ask fundamental questions about what the best known dinosaur was like as a living, breathing animal. Tyrannosaurid Paleobiology present a series of wide-ranging and innovative studies that cover diverse topics such as how tyrannosaurs attacked and dismembered prey, the shapes and sizes of feet and brains, and what sorts of injuries individuals sustained and lived with. There are also examinations of the diversity of tyrannosaurs, determinations of exactly when different kinds lived and died, and what goes into making a museum exhibit featuring tyrannosaurs. This volume clearly shows that there is much more to the study of dinosaurs than just digging up and cataloguing old bones.” —Donald M. Henderson, Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology
Book Synopsis A Concise Dictionary of Paleontology by : Robert L. Carlton
Download or read book A Concise Dictionary of Paleontology written by Robert L. Carlton and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-07 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This authored dictionary presents a unique glossary of paleontological terms, taxa, localities, and concepts, with focus on the most significant orders, genera, and species in terms of historical turning points such as mass extinctions. The book is an accurate and up-to-date collection of the most important paleontological terms and taxa, and may be used as a resource by students, researchers, libraries, and museums. Though useful to many in professional and academic settings, the book is also aimed at general readers of scientific literature who may enjoy the material without a background in paleontology. While there are many current resources on the subject, few fully encapsulate an accurate representation of the paleontological lexicon. This book attempts to compile such a representation in a moderately comprehensive manner, and includes a list of the most important monographs and articles that have been consulted to put together this essential work.
