Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The South Pennines covers the hill country between Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire, easily accessible but less well known than other walking hot spots. This is an area of high moorland with deep, often wooded valleys and drained by fast-flowing rivers such as the Colne and Calder. Early textile industry took place in isolated farms and small collections of houses dotted around the countryside, where income from farming often marginal land was supplemented by handloom weaving; the workshops often ran along the top storey of a terrace of cottages with the typical rows of mullioned windows. There were so many of these isolated settlements with people needing to travel between them and to the cloth markets, such as Halifax’s magnificent PIece Hall, that there is a dense network of footpaths, so inviting for exploration on foot. Later, textile production moved to water-driven mills, now abandoned but providing a unique landscape as they are being reclaimed by nature, such as at Crimsworth Dene or Healey Dell. Steam power using the plentiful water and coal resources meant that huge factories could be built for textile production; these are themselves now being adapted for other uses, including housing such as the Titanic Mill at Slaithwaite. Stuart and his wife Jean spent many hours walking the paths and byways of this magical area, with Stuart’s camera recording the many beautiful and interesting sights they encountered. This book is a testament to a couple’s love of rambling for almost 40 years in the magical South Pennines.

Book excerpt: The Southern Fells include the highest, roughest, grandest fells in Lakeland including the highest mountain in England, Scafell Pike. Wainwright – a fell-walking legend in his own lifetime – knew the terrain and conveyed its grandeur and beauty like nobody else. In this unique Pictorial Guide, he writes of the glorious curves and simple grandeur of Great Langdale; of Wasdale, 'an emerald amongst sombre hills'; of enchanting Borrowdale; of the sparkling radiance of the Duddon; and of the most delectable valley of all – Eskdale, 'sanctuary of peace and solitude'. The Pictorial Guides by A. Wainwright, written half a century ago, have been treasured by generations of walkers. This edition of The Southern Fells is freshly reproduced from Wainwright's original hand-drawn pages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1983, while still a junior monk, Ajahn Amaro walked the length of England with Nick Scott over a three month period. His account of the walk was published as Tudong – The Long Road North. Twenty-five years later, now an abbot and well known teacher, he and Nick, an ecologist, retraced the journey, visiting many of the places and people they encountered so many years before. This new book is the story of both journeys. Using extracts from the original diary, recordings of conversations that occured along the way and Ajahn Amaro’s photographs, Nick recounts the changes they found and their reflections on them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the constant fascinations Mill holds for the general public as well as scholars derives from the early flowering of his genius. This development is seen in detail in the journal and notebook he kept in France during his fifteenth year, and in the debating speeches and walking-tour journals dating from his eighteenth to twenty-fourth years. This was the period when he first adopted Benthamism as 'a religion,' worked intensively as a propagandist for the faith, and then began the painful reassessment that led to his independent mature thought and action. Some of the results of that reassessment are seen in the diary entries from 1854, written for his wife, which reveal in personal form many of their most passionately held ideas. These materials have never before been gathered, and almost all appear here for the first time in scholarly form. They throw light on contemporary social interests and behavior, and will encourage new assessments of Mill’s life and thought. The texts, the great majority drawn from manuscripts, are presented in critical form, collated, with explanatory and textual notes. The Introduction gives the personal and historical context, with an analysis of content and rhetoric; the Textual Introduction supplies information about the nature and history of the documents, while Appendices provide ancillary materials. Both bibliographic and analytic indexes are included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hadrian's Cycleway is a 174 mile route from Ravenglass in Cumbria to South Shields. Also known as Route 72, this coast-to-coast route heads north up the Cumbrian coast to reach the Solway AONB before crossing northern England along Hadrian's Wall and into Northumberland. Suitable for cyclists of all abilities, the ride is usually completed over three days from west to east. The route allows cyclists to explore Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site, visiting Roman forts including Vindolanda and Housesteads as well as milecastles, abbeys and historic towns. Other highlights include the Cumbrian coast, Tyne Valley and the famous Sycamore Gap. While the main route is described from west to east over three days, the guide provides plenty of information about other options. Advice is given at the end of each stage about how to complete the route from east to west, as the route can be used in connection with other coast to coast routes to create week-long round trips. Other itineraries include a two-day Wall Only ride from Bowness-on-Solway to South Shields, and a 'More Wall Alternative' to Day 2. The guide also features extensive listings of accommodation, bike shops and other cyclist-friendly facilities.
