Book Synopsis The Grey Bastards by : Jonathan French
Download or read book The Grey Bastards written by Jonathan French and published by Crown. This book was released on 2019-03-19 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “[A] fantasy masterwork . . . a dirty, blood-soaked gem of a novel [that reads] like Mad Max set in Tolkien’s Middle-earth.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review) Jackal and his fellow half-orcs patrol the barren wastes of the Lot Lands, spilling their own damned blood to keep civilized folk safe. A rabble of hard-talking, hog-riding, whore-mongering brawlers they may be, but the Grey Bastards are Jackal’s sworn brothers, fighting at his side in a land where there’s no room for softness. And once Jackal’s in charge—as soon as he can unseat the Bastards’ tyrannical, seemingly unkillable founder—there’s a few things they’ll do different. Better. Or at least, that’s the plan. Until the fallout from a deadly showdown makes Jackal start investigating the Lot Lands for himself. Soon, he’s wondering if his feelings have blinded him to ugly truths about this world, and the Bastards’ place in it. In a quest for answers that takes him from decaying dungeons to the frontlines of an ancient feud, Jackal finds himself battling invading orcs, rampaging centaurs, and grubby human conspiracies alike—along with a host of dark magics so terrifying they’d give even the heartiest Bastard pause. Finally, Jackal must ride to confront a threat that’s lain in wait for generations, even as he wonders whether the Bastards can—or should--survive. Delivered with a generous wink to Sons of Anarchy, featuring sneaky-smart worldbuilding and gobs of fearsomely foul-mouthed charm, The Grey Bastards is a grimy, pulpy, masterpiece—and a raunchy, swaggering, cunningly clever adventure that’s like nothing you’ve read before. Praise for The Grey Bastards “Saddle up the war boar and set off on a wild, gory thrill-ride that ends in an awesome climax and begs for a sequel.”—Daily Mail (UK) “Non-stop action, though not for faint hearts . . . the Grey Bastards live up to their name in all respects.”—The Wall Street Journal

Book Synopsis U.S. Air Force Strategic Deterrence Capabilities in the 21st Century Security Environment by : National Research Council
Download or read book U.S. Air Force Strategic Deterrence Capabilities in the 21st Century Security Environment written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changes in the 21st century security environment require new analytic approaches to support strategic deterrence. Because current adversaries may be deterred from the use of nuclear weapons differently than were Cold War adversaries, the Air Force needs an analytic process and tools that can help determine those Air Force capabilities that will successfully deter or defeat these new nuclear-armed adversaries and assure U.S. allies. While some analytic tools are available, a coherent approach for their use in developing strategy and policy appears to be lacking. Without a coherent analytic approach that addresses the nuances of today's security environment, Air Force views of its strategic deterrence needs may not be understood or accepted by the appropriate decision makers. A coherent approach will support Air Force decisions about its strategic force priorities and needs, deter actual or potential adversaries, and assure U.S. allies. In this context, the Air Force in 2012 requested that the Air Force Studies Board of the National Research Council undertake a workshop to bring together national experts to discuss current challenges relating strategic deterrence and potential new tools and methods that the Air Force might leverage in its strategic deterrence mission. The workshop consisted of two 3-day sessions held in Washington, DC on September 26-28, 2012 and January 29-31, 2013 and was attended by a very diverse set of participants with expertise in strategic deterrence and a range of analytic tools of potential interest to the Air Force. U.S. Air Force Strategic Deterrence Capabilities in the 21st Century Security Environment summarizes this workshop.

Download or read book Body in the Woods written by Behcet Kaya and published by KDP. This book was released on 2024-05-16 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Award-winning author Behcet Kaya has once again brought his PI protagonist Jack Ludefance to life in a novel of suspense and mystery, filled with indelible characters, and laced with threads of credible circumstances, in his latest book titled Body in the Woods. Set in the hills in Malibu, California, Jack is asked by his friend, a wealthy businessman in the military defense industry, to come to his aid to help solve a murder; because it seems his business partner’s body has turned up murdered and the police have pegged him as the prime suspect. Although not yet formally charged, he needs Jack’s help to find the real killer and thus secure his freedom, while solving the crime of who actually killed his partner. Jack obliges and travels from his home in Florida to Los Angeles to pick up the case. What begins as a step-by-step private investigation into the evidence surrounding the death of the notoriously cunning, smart and cleverly manipulating business partner of Jack’s client, turns into an international quagmire of intrigue, scientific secrets, and vast amounts of money. People with power, influence and fortunes are all jockeying for a once–in-a-lifetime business deal, while death surrounds the periphery of their involvement. Body in the Woods stands on its own merits as there is enough background to appease the fans of Kaya’s books without bogging down the plot with historical events. This book is impossible to put down; at first due to the character development, then again when readers hit the critical mass plot point. It will surprise the savviest of readers with its twists and turns of logic, morality, integrity, and honesty.
Book Synopsis A Woman's Place Is in the Brewhouse by : Tara Nurin
Download or read book A Woman's Place Is in the Brewhouse written by Tara Nurin and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2021-09-21 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: • North American Guild of Beer Writers Best Book 2022 Dismiss the stereotype of the bearded brewer. It's women, not men, who've brewed beer throughout most of human history. Their role as family and village brewer lasted for hundreds of thousands of years—through the earliest days of Mesopotamian civilization, the reign of Cleopatra, the witch trials of early modern Europe, and the settling of colonial America. A Woman's Place Is in the Brewhouse celebrates the contributions and influence of female brewers and explores the forces that have erased them from the brewing world. It's a history that's simultaneously inspiring and demeaning. Wherever and whenever the cottage brewing industry has grown profitable, politics, religion, and capitalism have grown greedy. On a macro scale, men have repeatedly seized control and forced women out of the business. Other times, women have simply lost the minimal independence, respect, and economic power brewing brought them. But there are more breweries now than at any time in American history and today women serve as founder, CEO, or head brewer at more than one thousand of them. As women continue to work hard for equal treatment and recognition in the industry, author Tara Nurin shows readers that women have been—and are once again becoming—relevant in the brewing world.

Book excerpt: Second century Wales, and the Romans have consolidated their hold on the Celtic Tribes of Western Britain. For the Demetae, they have brought civilisation and peace with their technology, but for other tribes, this same technology is used for brutal occupation. When Cadog, a resistance leader of the oppressed Silures, is caught up in the Demetian Village of Pentre Cothi, he finds a world of peaceful fraternisation between the Natives and the Roman garrison. He also finds love in Rhaonell, the beautiful young widow of the local Chief. Torn between his disgust of what he sees as blatant collaboration with the enemy, and his love for Rhaonell, he decides to leave and return to his own people. But the Fates have other plans when Quintus, an ambitious young Roman Officer, moves quickly to intercept him. His actions precipitate anger and reprisals from a normally peaceful tribe. Coinciding with timultuous events in the North, and trained by the Silurian, the local uprising in this remote part of Britain quickly escalates to the extent that Caesar Hadrian leaves Rome to come to see for himself what is happening to the Western part of his Empire...
Book Synopsis The Unsinkable Herr Goering by : Ian Cassidy
Download or read book The Unsinkable Herr Goering written by Ian Cassidy and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2012-09-19 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contrary to what the so-called history books tell you, Hermann Goering, Hitler’s Deputy, Head of the Luftwaffe and second most powerful man in Nazi Germany, did not leave this world courtesy of a cyanide tablet secreted in the heel of his jackboot minutes before his appointment with the hangman. The truth is far more bizarre. THE UNSINKABLE HERR GOERING is a monumental debut novel by Ian Cassidy. It follows Goering, a man blindsided by hubris, on his attempted escape – from both Germany as well as from the Allies – and the inept men of mettle who put a stop to it. It is a hilariously depraved story of of villainous villains, slightly less villainous heroes, bad behavior (and even worse beer), and uncomfortable underwear. Not since A Confederacy of Dunces has a book brought to life such audaciously flawed characters. It gets so much wrong, yet so much right.

Download or read book Homeward Bound written by Emily Matchar and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-05-07 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emily Matchar offers a smart, measured investigation into the cultural, social, and economic implications of a return to domesticity in this fascinating book “chock-full of historical context, strong research and compelling personal stories” (Christian Science Montor). Amid today’s rising anxieties—the economy, the scary state of the environment, the growing sense that the American Dream hasn’t turned out to be so dreamy after all—a groundswell of women (and more than a few men) are choosing to embrace an unusual rebellion: domesticity. A generation of smart, highly educated young people are spending their time knitting, canning jam, baking cupcakes, gardening, and more (and blogging about it, of course), embracing the labor-intensive domestic tasks their mothers and grandmothers eagerly shrugged off. They’re questioning whether regular jobs are truly fulfilling and whether it’s okay to turn away from the ambitions of their parents’ generation. How did this happen? And what does it all mean? In Homeward Bound, acclaimed journalist Emily Matchar takes a long, hard look at both the inspiring appeal and the potential dangers of this trend she calls the New Domesticity, exploring how it could be reshaping the role of women in society and what the consequences may be for all of us. This groundbreaking reporting on the New Domesticity is guaranteed to transform our notions of women in today’s society and add a new layer to the ongoing discussion of whether women can—or should—have it all.
