Within a matter of minutes, Talisa’s life changes. As her mother slowly fades into the unknown, the family tries to stay afloat through waves of turmoil. With a distant father, a rebelling older sister, and a younger brother to look after, Talisa’s life becomes complicated, and the odds continually stack. Growing up becomes a game of hopscotch, where each leap demands perseverance. Hidden secrets. Life-threatening decisions. Stolen adolescence. While desperately clinging to hope, life tosses Talisa into a whirlwind of storms, what will she do? Will she dig deep to find a resolution? Will she have what it takes to push through the face of adversity? The clock is ticking. Book Review 1: A breath-taking raw account of the effects of a disease, trauma and poverty, and the hope that prevails. I found myself holding my breath as the curtain was pulled back. This unvarnished debut is not to be missed! ----Courtney Cole, New York Times Bestselling Author Book Review 2: This story reveals the resilience of a young girl who refuses to give up hope when her mother is diagnosed with an often-debilitating disease. Through dramatic truths, humor, and beautifully poetic asides, it took me on a ride through a no-holds-barred narrative demonstrating the sometimes-difficult steps we must face to reach true self-awareness. ----Sarah M. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foundation Engineering is of prime importance to undergraduate and postgraduate students of civil engineering as well as to practising engineers. For, there is no construction - be it buildings (government, commercial and residential), bridges, highways, or dams - that does not draw from the principles and application of this subject. Unlike many textbooks on Geotechnical Engineering that deal with both Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering, this text gives an exclusive treatment and an indepth analysis of Foundation Engineering. What distinguishes the text is that it not merely equips the students with the necessary knowledge for the course and examination, but provides a solid foundation for further practice in their profession later. In addition, as the book is based on the Codes prescribed by the Bureau of Indian Standards, students of Indian universities will find it particularly useful. The author is specialized in both Soil Mechanics and Structural Engineering; he studied Soil Mechanics under the guidance of Prof. Terzaghi and Prof. Casagrande of Harvard University - the pioneers of the subject. Similarly, he studied Structural Engineering under Prof. A.L.L. Baker of Imperial College, London, the pioneer of Limit State Design. These specializations coupled with over 50 years of teaching experience of the author make this text authoritative and exhaustive. Intended as a text for undergraduate (Civil Engineering) and postgraduate (Geotechnical Engineering and Structural Engineering) students, the book would also be found highly useful to practising engineers and young academics teaching the course.

Book excerpt: The planning meeting for a conference on Dynamic Crack Propagation was held at M.LT. in February 1971 and attended by research workers from several industrial, governmental and academic organizations. It was felt that a more specialized meeting would provide a better opportunity for both U.S. and foreign researchers to exchange their ideas and views on dynamic fracture, a subject which is seldom emphasized in national or international fracture conferences. Dynamic crack propagation has been a concern to specialists in many fields: continuum mechanics, metallurgy, geology, polymer chemistry, orthopedics, applied mathematics, as well as structural design and testing. It impinges on a wide variety of problems such as rock breaking and earthquakes, pressure vessels and line pipes, comminution and the per formance of armament and ordnance, etc. Advances have been numerous, covering theories and experiments from both the microscopic and macro scopic points of view. Hence, the need for comparing the theoretical and experimental results and bridging the gaps between the atomistic and continuum approaches must be constantly emphasized. It also appeared that the overall problem of dynamic fracture could benefit from a con solidation of crack models proposed for the various types of materials: metals, ceramics, composites, rocks, glasses, polymers and biomaterials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Restraint and intrinsic stresses in concrete at early ages are vitally important for concrete structures which must remain free of water-permeable cracks, such as water-retaining structures, tunnel linings, locks and dams. The development of hydration heat, stiffness and strength, also the degree of restraint and, especially for high-strength concrete, non-thermal effects, are decisive for sensitivity to cracking. Determining thses stresses in the laboratory and in construction components has led to a clearer understanding of how they develop and how to optimize mix design, temperature and curing conditions. New testing equipment has enabled the effects of all the important parameters to be qualified and more reliable models for predictiong restraint stresses to be developed. Thermal Cracking in Conrete at Early Ages contains 56 contributions by leading international specialists presented at the RILEM Symposium held in October 1994 at the Technical University of Munich. It will be valuable for construction and site engineers, concrete technologists and scientists.
