Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of a third generation Texas woman born in a small town in the center of the Texas Panhandle. Over protected and reared to be a wife and mother just as all the women in her family had been, her goal became just that, to be a wife and mother and to have a family of her own. Fate intervened, however, at every crossroad when her difficult first marriage to a rancher ended and she faced life as a single parent. After remarrying a few years later she was soon tragically widowed and, at 31, had to bury the man she loved so dearly. He was a Pathologist whose own terrible twist of fate occurred at the beginning of his medical career when, as an intern at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, he assisted with the initial postmortem exam on our late President John F. Kennedy. From that moment he was forced to live with deadly secrets which severely altered his life forever. This story focuses on the author's great struggle to believe in herself to face the world alone and the unbelievable frustration of having to again and again tolerate and rise above numerous legal entanglements, drastic financial losses and, on top of everything else, employment injustices; all this while rearing her daughter with no one by her side to believe in her. In midlife, she was brought to her knees after having a series of tragic events when she even prayed to die... this time she was led to the Great Throne of God’s Grace. In writing this she was able to revisit and immortalize those she loved so dearly after losing precious loved ones tragically...a life impossible but for the grace of God and for scriptures such as: Proverbs 3: 5 & 6, “Trust in the Lord with all thy heart and lean not unto thine own understanding, in all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy paths”; Genesis 50:20, “But as for you, ye thought evil against me, but God meant it unto good”; and Proverbs 16:3, “Commit to the Lord whatever you do and He will establish your plans”.

Book excerpt: Why do the earliest representations of cowboy-figures symbolizing the highest ideals of manhood in American culture exclude male-female desire while promoting homosocial and homoerotic bonds? Evidence from the best-known Western writers and artists of the post-Civil War period - Owen Wister, Mark Twain, Frederic Remington, George Catlin - as well as now-forgotten writers, illustrators, and photographers, suggest that in the period before the word 'homosexual' and its synonyms were invented, same-sex intimacy and erotic admiration were key aspects of a masculine code. These males-only clubs of journalists, cowboys, miners, Indian vaqueros defined themselves by excluding femininity and the cloying ills of domesticity, while embracing what Roosevelt called 'strenuous living' with other bachelors in the relative 'purity' of wilderness conditions. Queer Cowboys recovers this forgotten culture of exclusively masculine, sometimes erotic, and often intimate camaraderie in fiction, photographs, illustrations, song lyrics, historical ephemera, and theatrical performances.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering many aspects of the Vietnam War that have not been addressed before, this book supplies new perspectives from academics as well as Vietnam veterans that explore how this key conflict of the 20th century has influenced everyday life and popular culture during the war as well as for the past 50 years. How did the experience of the Vietnam War change the United States, not just in the 1950s through the 1970s, but through to today? What role do popular music and movies play in how we think of the Vietnam War? How similar are the recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan—and now Syria—to the Vietnam War in terms of duration, cost, success and failure rates, and veteran issues? This two-volume set addresses these questions and many more, examining how the Vietnam War has been represented in media, music, and film, and how American popular culture changed because of the war. Accessibly written and appropriate for students and general readers, this work documents how the war that occurred on the other side of the globe in the jungles of Vietnam impacted everyday life in the United States and influenced various entertainment modes. It not only covers the impact of the counterculture revolution, popular music about Vietnam recorded while the war was being fought (and after), and films made immediately following the end of the war in the 1970s, but also draws connections to more modern events and popular culture expressions, such as films made in the aftermath of September 11, 2001. Attention is paid to the impact of social movements like the environmental movement and the civil rights movement and their relationships to the Vietnam War. The set will also highlight how the experiences and events of the Vietnam War are still impacting current generations through television shows such as Mad Men.

Book excerpt: It was after midnight in 1990, and a group of NASA technicians are playing chess in the lounge. They never notice the soft clicking noises as radiation detectors kick in and a strange code begins taking over a computer monitor. As a glowing saucer zips past the Voyager, locks itself into orbit around Neptune, rolls over, and then disappears from view, the technicians loudly argue over the rules of the game unaware that aliens are headed toward Earth. Unfortunately, the amphibian-like creatures who reproduce in alarming numbers have made a serious mistake. They have chosen a small town in Iowa as the place to launch their invasion, mistakenly thinking they can attack under a cloak of invisibility. But this rural setting is protected by the Pirates, an elite team of adventurers and foilers of evil plots comprised of the most dangerous creatures on planet Earth young boys. As the alien invaders kidnap one of the pirates and begin to examine him for weaknesses, they have no idea that they have in their possession the girl-hating, chaos-creating nuisance that is the bane of all fourth-grade math teachers in town. It may be the last mistake they'll ever make.
