Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Song of the Lost Boy is the latest novel from Winchester author Maggie Allder. Living in a homeless encampment on the edge of Winchester, Giorgio has become separated from his parents. With great determination, he sets out to find then; unaware of the difficulties he will encounter searching for missing people in a neo-fascist state. Giorgio has only three clues to guide him: his name, a necklace and a half-remembered song. He pursues each of his leads in turn, all the while trying to avoid attracting the attention of the authorities, fearing that they will put him in care if they catch him. Eventually his path leads him to unexpected discoveries, and to a new sort of belonging. With times of difficulty, danger, kindness and love, Giorgio pursues his goal. He meets a host of interesting characters along the way, from Spanner-in-the-Works and the brothers Big Bear and Little Bear, to the Old Man who lives in the copse at the top of the hill, to Vishna, who becomes like an older sister to Giorgio. As he searches for the missing adults, Giorgio grows up and learns about the world in which he lives and the people around him. The Song of the Lost Boy is a charming story with moments of sadness and tragedy, but also contentment and joy.

Book excerpt: The twelve case studies in Chinese Law: Knowledge, Practice and Transformation, 1530s to 1950s, edited by Li Chen and Madeleine Zelin, open a new window onto the historical foundation and transformation of Chinese law and legal culture in late imperial and modern China. Their interdisciplinary analyses provide valuable insights into the multiple roles of law and legal knowledge in structuring social relations, property rights, popular culture, imperial governance, and ideas of modernity; they also provide insight into the roles of law and legal knowledge in giving form to an emerging revolutionary ideology and to policies that continue to affect China to the present day.
Book Synopsis Corpora in Interpreting Studies by : Andrew K.F. Cheung
Download or read book Corpora in Interpreting Studies written by Andrew K.F. Cheung and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cheung, Liu, Moratto, and their contributors examine how corpora can be effectively harnessed to benefit interpreting practice and research in East Asian settings. In comparison to the achievements made in the field of corpus- based translation studies, the use of corpora in interpreting is not comparable in terms of scope, methods, and agenda. One of the predicaments that hampers this line of inquiry is the lack of systematic corpora to document spoken language. This issue is even more pronounced when dealing with East Asian languages such as Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, which are typologically different from European languages. As language plays a pivotal role in interpreting research, the use of corpora in interpreting within East Asian contexts has its own distinct characteristics as well as methodological constraints and concerns. However, it also generates new insights and findings that can significantly advance this research field. A valuable resource for scholars of scholars focusing on corpus interpreting, particularly those dealing with East Asian languages.
