Book excerpt: An illustrated manuscript textbook, in two volumes, containing a military course on the use of firearms from the military school in Vincennes. The course book from the intensive one-year course at the école de tir (shooting school), was created by L. Grandin, a Lieutenant of the 48th Infantry regiment, as part of the graduation requirement at the military academy. The instructional program was designed to provide officers with a comprehensive understanding of firearms: their history, their technical composition, and their use. The course is divided into 36 lessons. The first seven lessons identify the basic components of various firearms: the barrel (canon), the bayonet, the ramrod (garniture), the priming pan (platine), and the stock (monture); there is also an outline of the historical development of firearms (v.1, p. 63). Descriptions of various components are quite detailed and are often accompanied by detailed illustrations and diagrams. Lessons 8-16 address ballistics and marksmanship. These lessons provide highly mathematical theories of ballistics and projectile motion with trigonometric diagrams; they also give practical instructions for targeting precision. Lessons 17 and 18 address the recent history of rifled barrels (armes rayées) and outline the experiments recently conducted by military engineers these lessons conclude the first volume. Lessons 19-25 in the second volume continue the discussion of the practical application of rifles with various calibers. Lessons 26-27 contain the general discussion of marksmanship and present other experiments designed to improve targeting. Lessons 28 and 29 outline the technological developments of firearms in other European countries and in the United States; they also include several pasted printed articles (v.2, p. 482, p. 486, p. 502) and a variety of detailed illustrations. Lessons 30-33 discuss the history and the technology associated with the manufacture of gunpowder, of munitions, of firearms, and of portable firearms, respectively. Lessons 34-36, deemed supplementary, address the conservation of munitions, the appropriate procedure of re-charging and repairing weapons, and the history of shooting schools. All lessons are individually dated and signed by Grandin; the dates of composition range between 19 February and 15 May, 1858. The writing varies between long lines and two columns; sections that have two columns often contain illustrations in the left columns. There are approximately 600 illustrations in total, ranging in size from small marginalia drawings to large illustrations that are inserted in folded plates; most illustrations are in ink but some are in color (v.2, p. 562). Grandin also included a number of charts and diagrams. The main text is preceded by a lithographed table of contents and a summary of each of the lessons in the course, by E. Fevre, Captain of artillery and instructor of the shooting course at Vincennes. There are also copies of printed articles concerning armed forces and weapons in Russia and England written by Théophile Lavallée, a geographer from St. Cyr (starting in v.1, p. 321). There is also a looseleaf insert at the end of the first volume entitled Etude des accessoires du fusil d'infanterie; Modifications à y apporter, dated 1 April 1861. Contemporary pagination is made in ink at the top of each page; it is continuous through both volumes; text block outlined in lead or in ink.
