Book excerpt: Men today have locked horns with their toughest issue: reclaiming the full potential of manhood. But in the midst of the excitement -- the meetings, rallies, seminars, and high-fives -- is something vital missing? What gives manhood definition and meaning? In The Silence of Adam, Dr. Larry Crabb and his colleagues, biblical scholar Don Hudson and counselor Al Andrews, offer a fresh look at how God designed men. They draw from neglected biblical data and their own professional experience to help us explore - manhood's lost vision - the problems of masculine community - the power of mentoring relationships -- The Silence of Adam deals thoughtfully and honestly with men's ongoing struggles and exposes the difficulties they have in relationships. It presents the rich calling men have to reveal God in ways uniquely masculine. And it summons them beyond their paralyzing fear of failure to bold risk-taking, action, deep spirituality, and full-hearted living.

Book excerpt: "Marry Me and I Will Take You All Over the World" is best summarized by its sub-title: Quotes and Tidbits from a Life of Love. Many families will recognize their own shenanigans from this book. Since it is written for anyone who can read, I have omitted lots of material that might be considered offensive. Here's one I probably should have retained: The year is 1984; an American colleague is visiting us in Paris to be honored for technical contributions to the Society of Petroleum Engineers. He thanks everybody: "merci beaucoup" (and they say Americans do not speak foreign languages!). He really should have stopped there, though. Instead, he continues in his best French: "I would like to sleep with all of you," (je voudrai .....), when he meant to say "I love you all," (je vous aime.) You'd think the French would be upset, but in fact they whooped and hollered at least my buddy "attempted" their language, and did not just assume that they all speak English. They get a bad rap, the French, for brusqueness ... and rightly so (just kidding, France.) But actually they can be really nice; and Paris is a great cultural and architectural city (oh la la!). So ... that's one of the many I excluded; wait until you get to the ones that made the book. As for the ones that I omitted, well they should fit nicely in my next book: "Wait, Wait, There's More ... The Movie Version."

Book excerpt: You can beat the parenting chaos! Did you start off your parenting journey a bit starry-eyed? You just knew that your children would be better behaved than those other children. They'd be mess-free, they'd never disobey, and they'd always listen intently to your words of wisdom. Then reality hit, and you realized you'd been tricked. It turns out that these little angels have their own minds-and those minds seem primed for disobedience. If this sounds a little too familiar, you're not alone. But there's hope! You can overcome the chaos of parenting and raise kids who will become incredible grown-ups. Join Joel Wolfe as she recounts her parenting adventures in the Wolfe Den, and learn how she and her husband successfully released four capable, independent humans into the wild. You'll cheer at her victories, laugh at her calamities, and most of all, come away with the necessary tools to raise your own cubs. You'll receive wisdom to deal with day-to-day parenting problems, and you'll find the courage, hope, and strength to tame the chaos in your home. You can do this parenting thing. All it takes is to find your courage in chaos. Here's what people are saying about Courage in Chaos: "I love to find parenting books that inspire both the heart and the head in equal measure. Joel Wolfe has something special on her hands with this one!" -Dr. Kevin Leman, author of Making Children Mind without Losing Yours and The Birth Order Book "In this courageous conduit out of chaos, Joel Wolfe provides the modern family with a roadmap for raising incredible children. Courage in Chaos is not only a compelling read but also a vital reference guide that purposeful parents will always keep readily at hand. It is quite clear and enormously reassuring that this book wasn't birthed in remote academic theory but springs from loving, practical parenting consistently applied. You will quickly come to regard it as one of your most crucial allies in the sometimes scary, always challenging, but supremely satisfying job of being a parent." -Rabbi Daniel Lapin, author of Thou Shall Prosper and President of the American Alliance of Jews and Christians "We love Joel Wolfe's new book, Courage in Chaos. It's brilliant, easy to read, and one that you'll return to over and over again for advice. You'll enjoy her real-life examples and solutions discovered through her own experiences, her extensive study of scholarly works, and Scripture on the subject. She's real and holds nothing back from the reader, sharing her own successes and failures openly and honestly. Her book will give you a strong foundation on which to develop children who become strong, responsible adults who are able to wisely navigate life while caring for others, developing healthy relationships, and becoming successful in their life's work and God-given destiny. You'll want to purchase a copy not only for yourself but for others as well." -Brian Simmons, lead translator of The Passion Translation "Courage in Chaos is a delight to read and a highly practical guide to rearing children into healthy, creative young adults. Joel Wolfe is a relentless student of life who shares her wealth of experience and wisdom, distilled into uncomplicated strategies. This isn't simply theory but is tried-and-true wisdom. "A powerful, absorbing story that shines a light on an often overlooked chapter in human history." -- Alan Gratz, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Refugee World War I stretches its cruel fingers across Europe, where five young people, each from different backgrounds and nations, face the terror of battle, the deprivations of hunger, and all the awful challenges of war. Kara, from Britain, dreams of someday earning her Red Cross pin and working as a nurse -- or even a doctor. Juliette, of France, hopes her family can remain knitted together, despite her father's imprisonment, as the war's longest battle stretches on and on. Elsa, from Germany, hopes her homing pigeon might one day bring her a friend from out of the chaos. And Dimitri, of Russia, wants only to survive the front, where he's been sent with no weapon. None of them will find exactly what they want. But the winds of fate may cross their paths to give each of them just what they need. Nielsen, they will discover that friendship and courage can light the way through the most frightening of nights.

Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A clear-eyed account of learning how to lead in a chaotic world, by General Jim Mattis—the former Secretary of Defense and one of the most formidable strategic thinkers of our time—and Bing West, a former assistant secretary of defense and combat Marine. “A four-star general’s five-star memoir.”—The Wall Street Journal Call Sign Chaos is the account of Jim Mattis’s storied career, from wide-ranging leadership roles in three wars to ultimately commanding a quarter of a million troops across the Middle East. Along the way, Mattis recounts his foundational experiences as a leader, extracting the lessons he has learned about the nature of warfighting and peacemaking, the importance of allies, and the strategic dilemmas—and short-sighted thinking—now facing our nation. He makes it clear why America must return to a strategic footing so as not to continue winning battles but fighting inconclusive wars. Mattis divides his book into three parts: Direct Leadership, Executive Leadership, and Strategic Leadership. In the first part, Mattis recalls his early experiences leading Marines into battle, when he knew his troops as well as his own brothers. In the second part, he explores what it means to command thousands of troops and how to adapt your leadership style to ensure your intent is understood by your most junior troops so that they can own their mission. In the third part, Mattis describes the challenges and techniques of leadership at the strategic level, where military leaders reconcile war’s grim realities with political leaders’ human aspirations, where complexity reigns and the consequences of imprudence are severe, even catastrophic. Call Sign Chaos is a memoir of a life of warfighting and lifelong learning, following along as Mattis rises from Marine recruit to four-star general. It is a journey about learning to lead and a story about how he, through constant study and action, developed a unique leadership philosophy, one relevant to us all.

Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking book, "The Courageous Police Leader: A Survival Guide for Combating Cowards, Chaos & Lies," Major Travis Yates tears down the walls separating law enforcement and the community and exposes the dirt that keeps law enforcement from excelling to greatness and that continues to give the criminal element the winning hand. With almost three decades of leadership experience in a major law enforcement agency and a current Commander, Yates dissects the ills within and outside the profession in a way you have never heard. Through his detailed research, impeccable story telling and personal experiences, Yates will expose the cowards, reveal the lies and show you how to navigate the chaos that often occurs when cowardly leaders refuse to stand up for the good and decent heroes that wear the badge. This book will not only show you what cowardly leadership can do to law enforcement and their community but also the greatness of what Courageous Police Leadership can achieve. Drawing from the ancient wisdom of Sun Tzu's Art of War, Yates gives targeted and specific advice on how to combat the enemies of law enforcement in a format and style that has never been achieved before. Topics that must be met with courage and explained include training, community policing, race relations, policy, the delusion of demographic parity, social justice "warriors", and how to deal with politics within the profession. Sheriff Jesse Watts says that "every leader needs this book" and Lt. Jim McNeff recommends "The Courageous Police Leader" for it's "sage wisdom" that will "stand the test of time."Whether you are in law enforcement, in business or a citizen that craves to know how law enforcement can better serve you, this book is for you.Find out what others are saying about "The Courageous Police Leader" and how you can play your part in achieving greatness at: www.StopCowards.com.
