In short, plasmonics guides, confines, localizes, and enhances electromagnetic waves to a small area to enable novel applications such as plasmonic waveguides, sub-wavelength diffraction lithography and imaging, higher photovoltaic efficiency, sub-wavelength lasers, and biological sensing. The first part of this dissertation will introduce the general concepts of plasmonics and its applications in biological sensing, starting from Maxell's equations and the Drude model of metal. In the second part, it will delve into the specifics of designing, simulating, fabricating, and characterizing nanostructures that show improved performance characteristics over previous published results. Plasmonic coupling of propagating surface plasmon polaritons and localized plasmons is utilized to fabricate three-dimensional mushroom-like metallodielectric array for improved surface plasmon resonance biological sensing over conventional nanohole array. It is used to determine the hydrophilicity of a surface by monitoring the shift in resonant wavelength. In addition, the fabricated structure is used to detect specific binding events between biotinylated-bovine serum albumin and streptavidin protein and demonstrates an improved limit of detection. The real-time control and manipulation of nanoparticles in a biocompatible aqueous solution is demonstrated in a multilayer micro/nanofluidic chip platform by using voltage control. This will have future applications to control and position nanoparticles and biomolecules to an area of maximum field enhancement to co-localize the analyte with the plasmonic nanostructure for maximal enhancement efficiency. Finally, the intra-particle plasmonic coupling of a nanotorch structure is utilized for surface enhanced Raman scattering detection to yield high enhancement factor and better than 80\% Raman signal uniformity due to the fabrication of controllable rim opening of the nanotorch and the deterministic orientation of the structure. The common theme of this dissertation is coupled plasmonic nanostructures for improved biological sensing applications.

Scaling these devices to smaller and smaller dimensions has enabled faster, more power efficient and inexpensive components but has also brought about a myriad of new challenges. One very important challenge is the growing size mismatch between electronic and photonic components. To overcome this challenge, we will need to develop radically new device technologies that can facilitate information transport between nanoscale components at optical frequencies and form a bridge between the world of nano-electronic and micro-photonics. Plasmonics is an exciting new field of science and technology that aims to exploit the unique optical properties of metallic nanostructures to gain a new level of control over light-matter interactions. The use of nanometallic (plasmonic) structures may help bridge the size gap between the two technologies and enable an increased synergy between chip-scale electronics and photonics. In the first part of this dissertation we analyze the performance of a surface plasmon-polariton all-optical switch that combines the unique physical properties of small molecules and metallic (plasmonic) nanostructures. The switch consists of a pair of gratings defined on an aluminum film coated with a thin layer of photochromic (PC) molecules. The first grating couples a signal beam consisting of free space photons to SPPs that interact effectively with the PC molecules. These molecules can reversibly be switched between transparent and absorbing states using a free space optical pump. In the transparent (signal "on") state, the SPPs freely propagate through the molecular layer, and in the absorbing (signal "off") state, the SPPs are strongly attenuated. The second grating serves to decouple the SPPs back into a free space optical beam, enabling measurement of the modulated signal with a far-field detector. We confirm and quantify the switching behavior of the PC molecules by using a surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy. The quantitative experimental and theoretical analysis of the nonvolatile switching behavior guides the design of future nanoscale optically or electrically pumped optical switches. In the second part of the dissertation we provide a critical assessment of the opportunities for use of plasmonic nanostructures in thin film solar cell technology. Thin-film solar cells have attracted significant attention as they provide a viable pathway towards reduced materials and processing costs. Unfortunately, the materials quality and resulting energy conversion efficiencies of such cells is still limiting their rapid large-scale implementation. The low efficiencies are a direct result of the large mismatch between electronic and photonic length scales in these devices; the absorption depth of light in popular PV semiconductors tends to be longer than the electronic (minority carrier) diffusion length in deposited thin-film materials. As a result, charge extraction from optically thick cells is challenging due to carrier recombination in the bulk of the semiconductor. We discuss how light absorption could be improved in ultra-thin layers of active material making use of large scattering cross sections of plasmonic structures. We present a combined computational-experimental study aimed at optimizing plasmon-enhanced absorption using periodic and non-periodic metal nanostructure arrays.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The control of light on the nano-scale has driven the development of novel optical devices such as biosensors, antennas and guiding elements. These applications benefit from the distinctive resonant properties of noble metal thin films and nanoparticles. Many optimization parameters exist in order to engineer nanoparticle properties for spectroscopy and sensing applications: for example, the choice of metal, the particle morphology, and the array geometry. By utilizing various designs from simple monomer gratings to more complex engineered arrays, we model and characterize plasmonic arrays for sensing applications. In this thesis, I have focused on the novel paradigm of photonic-plasmonic coupling to design, fabricate, and characterize optimized nanosensors. In particular, nanoplasmonic necklaces, which consist of circular loops of closely spaced gold nanoparticles, are designed using 3D finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations, fabricated with electron-beam lithography, and characterized using dark-field scattering and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) of p-mercaptoaniline (pMA) monolayers. I show that such necklaces are able to support hybridized dipolar scattering resonances and polarization-controlled electromagnetic hot-spots. In addition, necklaces exhibit strong intensity enhancement when the necklace diameter leads to coupling between the broadband plasmonic resonance and the circular resonator structure of the necklace. Hence, these necklaces lead to stronger field intensity enhancement than nanoparticle monomers and dimers, which are also carefully studied. Furthermore, by embedding a dimer into one or more concentric necklace resonators, I am able to efficiently couple radiation into the dimer hot-spot by utilizing first- and second-order far-field coupling. This nanolensing leads to an order of 6-18 times improvement in Raman enhancement over isolated dimers, which is a promising platform for compact on-chip sensors. Additionally, I have fabricated and experimentally characterized devices that were designed in my group for SERS of pMA using an optimization algorithm. The algorithm confirms that the best arrangement of nanoparticles to increase near-field intensity enhancement in a single hot-spot is to embed a dimer into particles that couple light into the hot-spot via far-field photonic radiation. These genetically optimized nanoantennas show improvement in Raman enhancement 10 times that of nanoparticle dimers, and 100 times the enhancement of optimized two-dimensional monomer diffraction gratings.

The LSPR wavelength of noble metal nanoparticles (such as gold, silver and copper), which falls into the visible and near infrared range of the electromagnetic spectrum, is sensitive to the composition, size, shape, dielectric properties of the surrounding medium, and proximity to other nanostructures (plasmon coupling). Based on the sensitivity of the surface plasmon resonance to the changes in the dielectric properties of the surrounding medium and the enhancement of the electromagnetic (EM) field in proximity of metal nanostructures, two important classes of plasmonic sensors have evolved: refractometric LSPR and surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensors. SERS involves the large enhancement of the Raman scattering from analytes adsorbed on or in close proximity to a nanostructured metal surface.Most of the SERS substrates based on individual nanostructures offer modest SERS enhancement. On the other hand, interstitial sites between assembled or lightly aggregated nanostructures, often termed as electromagnetic hotspots, offer large SERS signal enhancements, enabling the single molecule detection under ideal conditions. Although the assemblies of nanostructures are highly SERS-active, the SERS response is very sensitive to the assembly state, thus making it challenging to realize uniform and reproducible SERS substrates with high density of EM hotspots based on such traditional assemblies. Furthermore, the fabrication of SERS substrates based on the controlled assemblies of nanostructures involves either complex chemical methods or expensive lithographic techniques. Therefore, it is desirable to engineer nanostructures with inherent EM hotspots, which can significantly enhance the EM field and enable the sensitive detection of analytes using SERS.Hollow and porous metal nanostructures are a novel class of plasmonic nanostructures that exhibit extraordinary optical and catalytic properties compared to their solid counterparts, due to a higher surface to volume ratio and the facile tunability of the LSPR wavelength over a broad range from visible to parts of near infrared. In this work, we design, synthesize, and comprehensively characterize the optical properties of hollow nanostructures including plasmonic nanocages and nanorattles comprised of gold nanostructures as cores and porous gold cube as shells. We demonstrate that hollow and porous plasmonic nanostructures exhibit a significantly higher refractive index sensitivity compared to other solid nanostructures of similar size, leading to LSPR sensors with higher sensitivity and lower limit-of-detection compared to biosensors based on solid counterparts. Furthermore, we demonstrate that plasmonic nanorattles host electromagnetic hotspots between the core and the shell, offering significantly higher SERS enhancement as compared to other solid nanostructures of similar size. Through a systematic study, we unveil the influence of size, shape and orientation of the plasmonic nanorattles on the optical properties and SERS enhancement. The work described here provides guidelines for the design of hollow plasmonic nanostructures for various sensing applications.
