Book excerpt: The book contains pedagogical articles on the dominant non-stochastic methods of microscopic many-body theories: Density functional theory, coupled cluster theory, and correlated basis functions methods in their widest sense. Further articles introduce students to applications of these methods in front -- line research such as Bose-Einstein condensates, the nuclear many-body problem, and the dynamics of quantum liquids. These keynote articles are supplemented by experimental reviews on intimately connected topics of current relevance. The book addresses the striking lack of pedagogical reference literature in the field that allows researchers to acquire the requisite physical insight and technical skills. The volume should, therefore, not only researchers to acquire the requisite physical insight and technical skills. The volume should, therefore, not only serve as a collection of information relevant to those who attended the school, but it provides be useful reference material to a broad range of theoretical physicists in condensed matter and nuclear theory.

The subject of the book – “Coupled cluster theory” – has been around for about half a century. The basic theory and explicit equations for closed-shell ground states were formulated before 1970. At the beginning of the seventies the rst ab initio calcu- tion were carried out. At that time speed and memory of computers were very limited compared to today’s standards. Moreover, the size of one-electron bases employed was small, so that it was only possible to achieve an orientation in methodical aspects rather than to generate new signi cant results. Extensive use of the coupled-cluster method started at the beginning of the eighties. With the help of more powerful computers the results of coupled-cluster approaches started to yield more and more interesting results of relevance to the interpretation of experimental data. New ideas in methodology kept appearing and computer codes became more and more ef cient. This exciting situation continues to this very day. Remarkably enough, even the - quired equations can now be generated by a computer with the help of symbolic languages. The size of this monograph and the rich variety of articles it contains attests to the usefulness and viability of the couple-cluster formalism for the h- dling of many-electron correlation effects. This represents a vivid testimony of a tremendous work that has been accomplished in coupled-cluster methodology and its exploitation.

Book excerpt: The present volume contains the text of the invited lectures presented at the Symposium on Many Body Methods in Quantum Chemistry, held on the campus of Tel Aviv University in August 1988. The Symposium was a satellite meeting of the Sixth International Congress on Quantum Chemistry held in Jerusalem. The development and application of many-body methods in Quantum chemistry have been on the rise for a number of years. This is therefore a good time for an interim report on the state of the field. It is hoped that such a report is hereby provided, though it may not be complete. The Symposium was held under the auspices of Tel Aviv University, Raymond and Beverly Sackler Faculty of Exact Sciences, School of Chemistry. Other sponsors were the Israeli Academy of Sciences and Humanities, and the Israeli Ministry of Science and Development. Many thanks go to all of them. Finally, I would like to thank all the speakers and participants for making the meeting the enjoyable and (I hope) profitable experience it was. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brings Readers from the Threshold to the Frontier of Modern Research Many-Body Methods for Atoms and Molecules addresses two major classes of theories of electron correlation: the many-body perturbation theory and coupled cluster methods. It discusses the issues related to the formal development and consequent numerical implementation of the methods from the standpoint of a practicing theoretician. The book will enable readers to understand the future development of state-of-the-art multi-reference coupled cluster methods as well as their perturbative counterparts. The book begins with an introduction to the issues relevant to the development of correlated methods in general. It next gives a formally rigorous treatment of aspects that pave the foundation toward the theoretical development of methods capable of tackling problems of electronic correlation. The authors go on to cover perturbation theory first in a fundamental way and then in the multi-reference context. They also describe the idea of state-specific theories, Fock space-based multi-reference coupled cluster methods, and basic issues of the single-reference coupled cluster method. The book concludes with state-of-the-art methods of modern electronic structure.

Book excerpt: Brillouin-Wigner Methods for Many-Body Systems gives an introduction to many-body methods in electronic structure theory for the graduate student and post-doctoral researcher. It provides researchers in many-body physics and theoretical chemistry with an account of Brillouin-Wigner methodology as it has been developed in recent years to handle the multireference correlation problem. Moreover, the frontiers of this research field are defined. This volume is of interest to atomic and molecular physicists, physical chemists and chemical physicists, quantum chemists and condensed matter theorists, computational chemists and applied mathematicians.

Book excerpt: The Coupled Cluster Theory Electron Correlation Workshop "Fifty Years of the Correlation Problem" was held at Cedar Key, Florida, from June 15-19, 1997, to recognize the essential developments for one of the dominant topics in the quantum theory of atoms, molecules, and solids. The instantaneous Coulombic interactions among electrons that correlate their motion (the electron correlation problem) has been the focal point of ab initio quantum chemistry and physics for many years. Only with the proper inclusion of electron correlation in approximate solutions of the Schroedinger (or Dirac-Fock) equation is it possible to provide predictive accuracy for most properties of atoms and molecules. Such quantities include energetics (involving multiplets, dissociation pathways, and activation barriers), excited states and first- and second-order properties (like moments, field, gradients, polarizabilities, and magnetic susceptibilities), and vibrational, electronic, EPR and NMR spectra, among others.

Book excerpt: The Workshop on Coupled-Cluster Theory linked researchers by the need for high accuracy correlated calculations for electronic structure in atoms and molecules. One group were experts in coupled-cluster (CC) and many-body perturbation methods (MBPT) approaches for electron correlation in molecules, and had developed very powerful tools for determining molecular structure and spectra using CC/MBPT methods. The second group was primarily concerned with important applications to weak interactions in atoms, while employing many-body techniques in their calculations. Many examples were shown that demonstrate numerically the inherent superiority of CC methods for electron correlation compared to most other approaches.

Book excerpt: In July 2000 a conference was held to honour the 65th birthdays of four of the leading international figures in the field of quantum many-body theory. The joint research careers of John Clark, Alpo Kallio, Manfred Ristig and Sergio Rosati total some 150 years, and this festschrift celebrated their achievements. These cover a remarkably wide spectrum. The topics in this book reflect that diversity, ranging from formal aspects to real systems, including nuclear and subnuclear systems, quantum fluids and solids, quantum spin systems and strongly correlated electron systems. The book collects more than 30 invited contributions from eminent scientists, chosen both from among the participants at the conference and from colleagues who were unable to attend but nevertheless wished to contribute. To match the high standing of the honourees, the articles are of an exceptionally high quality. Together they provide a vivid overview of current work across the spectrum of quantum many-body theory.

Book excerpt: This proceedings volume describes many-body effects in highly correlated systems with special emphasis on metal clusters and transition from the free atom to the solid state limit and on strong laser field effects. The interdisciplinary nature of the subject should be stressed: clusters are a novel area of research, involving atomic, molecular, solid state and nuclear physics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a comprehensive account of relativistic many-body perturbation theory, based upon field theory. After some introductory chapters about time-independent and time dependent many-body perturbation theory (MBPT), the standard techniques of S-matrix and Green’s functions are reviewed. Next, the newly introduced covariant-evolution-operator method is described, which can be used, like the S-matrix method, for calculations in quantum electrodynamics (QED). Unlike the S-matrix method, this has a structure that is similar to that of MBPT and therefore can serve as basis for a unified theory. Such an approach is developed in the final chapters, and its equivalence to the Bethe-Salpeter equation is demonstrated. Possible applications are discussed and numerical illustrations given.
