Book excerpt: Solve challenging and computationally intensive analytics problems by leveraging network science and graph algorithms Key Features Learn how to wrangle different types of datasets and analytics problems into networks Leverage graph theoretic algorithms to analyze data efficiently Apply the skills you gain to solve a variety of problems through case studies in Python Purchase of the print or Kindle book includes a free PDF eBook Book DescriptionWe are living in the age of big data, and scalable solutions are a necessity. Network science leverages the power of graph theory and flexible data structures to analyze big data at scale. This book guides you through the basics of network science, showing you how to wrangle different types of data (such as spatial and time series data) into network structures. You’ll be introduced to core tools from network science to analyze real-world case studies in Python. As you progress, you’ll find out how to predict fake news spread, track pricing patterns in local markets, forecast stock market crashes, and stop an epidemic spread. Later, you’ll learn about advanced techniques in network science, such as creating and querying graph databases, classifying datasets with graph neural networks (GNNs), and mining educational pathways for insights into student success. Case studies in the book will provide you with end-to-end examples of implementing what you learn in each chapter. By the end of this book, you’ll be well-equipped to wrangle your own datasets into network science problems and scale solutions with Python. What you will learn Transform different data types, such as spatial data, into network formats Explore common network science tools in Python Discover how geometry impacts spreading processes on networks Implement machine learning algorithms on network data features Build and query graph databases Explore new frontiers in network science such as quantum algorithms Who this book is for If you’re a researcher or industry professional analyzing data and are curious about network science approaches to data, this book is for you. To get the most out of the book, basic knowledge of Python, including pandas and NumPy, as well as some experience working with datasets is required. This book is also ideal for anyone interested in network science and learning how graph algorithms are used to solve science and engineering problems. R programmers may also find this book helpful as many algorithms also have R implementations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Encompassing a broad range of forms and sources of data, this textbook introduces data systems through a progressive presentation. Introduction to Data Systems covers data acquisition starting with local files, then progresses to data acquired from relational databases, from REST APIs and through web scraping. It teaches data forms/formats from tidy data to relationally defined sets of tables to hierarchical structure like XML and JSON using data models to convey the structure, operations, and constraints of each data form. The starting point of the book is a foundation in Python programming found in introductory computer science classes or short courses on the language, and so does not require prerequisites of data structures, algorithms, or other courses. This makes the material accessible to students early in their educational career and equips them with understanding and skills that can be applied in computer science, data science/data analytics, and information technology programs as well as for internships and research experiences. This book is accessible to a wide variety of students. By drawing together content normally spread across upper level computer science courses, it offers a single source providing the essentials for data science practitioners. In our increasingly data-centric world, students from all domains will benefit from the “data-aptitude” built by the material in this book.

Book excerpt: Despite multiple past efforts, fragile Sub-Saharan African economies such as those of Mali, Chad, Niger, and Guinea still rank among the least diversified worldwide, with natural resources constituting a high share of their gross domestic product or exports. Large-scale production of gold for Mali, oil for Chad, uranium for Niger, and bauxite for Guinea offers substantial opportunities, but also has major shortcomings. Conclusive evidence shows poor economic performance by resource-rich but fragile Sub-Saharan African countries. The primary reason is not only their high vulnerability to external shocks, but the greed or grievances that typically lead to rents appropriation by a small group of elites in countries that are prone to conflict. Leveraging Export Diversifi cation in Fragile Countries explores the following questions: What are Mali’s, Chad’s, Niger’s, and Guinea’s main constraints to export diversification as perceived by key exporting firms? How it could be beneficial for these countries to target certain emerging export products? Are their current interventions to promote global value chain (GVC) adequate? What lessons can be extracted from specific cases? How can trade and logistic policies favor (or hamper) export diversification†“led growth? The book lays the groundwork for effective step-by-step multidimensional policies to propel export diversification in fragile economies that are hindered not only by poor governance and weak institutions, but also by their landlocked position (except Guinea), small domestic markets, and business-unfriendly environments. Recognizing that traditional project interventions in these countries have had limited success, mainly due to their unidimensional focus on single components of an agricultural value chain, the book proposes a GVC 2.0 cluster-based approach to export diversification, in which complementary efforts attract foreign firms and public investment in support of agribusiness. Promising pilot examples of joint implementation plans among multiple donors, risk-sharing facilities, and agribusiness clusters provide valuable insights into recent global value chain developer interventions.

Book excerpt: This Baseline Survey Report brings together the information collected through baseline surveys across the five countries supported by the project Integrated Country Approach (ICA) for boosting decent jobs for youth in the agrifood system (2019-2023). The ICA baseline surveys provide an in-depth understanding of the socioeconomic situation of the beneficiaries of the ICA pilot models before receiving support, the characteristics of their agribusinesses, as well as of their access to information and communication technology (ICT), finance and training. The report aims to foster information sharing across countries, highlight common challenges and lessons learned from the data collection process, and possibly inspire other similar youth employment interventions on the basis of the lessons learned from the ICA baselines and the changes that they induced for the overall theory of change of the ICA project.

In contrast to other books the authors present these concepts through real case studies. The application topics span from Foodwebs, to the Internet, the World Wide Web and the Social Networks, passing through the International Trade Web and Financial time series. The final part is devoted to definition and implementation of the most important network models. The text provides information on the structure of the data and on the quality of available datasets. Furthermore it provides a series of codes to allow immediate implementation of what is theoretically described in the book. Readers already used to the concepts introduced in this book can learn the art of coding in Python by using the online material. To this purpose the authors have set up a dedicated web site where readers can download and test the codes. The whole project is aimed as a learning tool for scientists and practitioners, enabling them to begin working instantly in the field of Complex Networks.
