Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title pulling triggers and pushing daisies, comes from two aspects of my life. One comes from a question: What's deadlier a gun or a thought that pulls the trigger? The second from a euphemism that simply means that a dead decomposing body is in a way allowing daisies to bloom. In other words, it symbolizes death. In my last book "The Monsters That Love Conquered", I had a simi-lar tone of death and killing things off, but I guess in my mind I'm just find-ing new ways to say the same things. But as I get older the meaning of love for me changes and the things I used to hold on to become more distant. I have become a professional at letting things go, but even though the meaning has changed love will and always be a factor, the shade of it just seems to get darker as the years past.

This collection of 10 essays addresses the quirky, off-beat elements that made the show a popular success, as well as fodder for scholarly inquiry. Divided into three main sections, the essays address the themes of difference, the placement of the series within a larger philosophical context, and the role of gender on the show. A consideration of Pushing Daisies' unique style and aesthetics is a consistent source of interest across these international and interdisciplinary scholarly critiques.

Book excerpt: The "Heinemann Science Scheme" offers an approach to the QCA's Scheme of Work. Teacher's resource packs provide support with lesson planning, with each chapter matching the Scheme of Work, and in-built assessment. The scheme aims to improve on the Scheme of Work by building in progression and a comprehensive revision programme to help prepare pupils for their National Tests. It also aims to make the Scheme of Work accessible to all pupils. The scheme builds on what students already know, following on from the Scheme of Work at Key Stages 1 and 2. It takes into account what pupils already know at the start of Key Stage 3 and builds from there. The "Heinemann Science Scheme" is also designed to build on the literacy and numeracy work pupils have done in primary schools.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1931, this volume offers Gertrude Stein's reflections on the art and craft of writing. Although written in her distinctive experimental style, the book is remarkably accessible and easy to read. The modernist author's characteristic humor is borne out by some of the chapter titles, "Saving the Sentence," "Arthur a Grammar," "Regular Regularly in Narrative," and "Finally George a Vocabulary." Stein's experimental style features elements such as disconnectedness, a love of refrain and rhyme, a search for rhythm and balance, a dislike of punctuation (especially the comma), and a repetition of words and phrases. Those who are unfamiliar with her Stein's work or have found it difficult to understand will discover in How to Write an excellent entrée to a unique literary voice and an imaginative approach to language that continues to inspire writers and readers.

Dames is back with another hip, sensual, and compelling novel. A Tragic Past... Daisy Parker's boyfriend has strayed one too many times and she's no longer sitting pretty. Having sacrificed seven years of her life to being his faithful woman and raising his nine-year-old son, the only thing that will calm her now is to hurl his beloved wardrobe out their second-story window. Single life may scare Daisy, but her mind is made up -- when the good-for-nothing returns, she'll serve him his walking papers. Only he isn't up to his old tricks that night, and what goes down strips Daisy of the option to choose. She's on her own. ...A Hopeful Future Left penniless, homeless, and jobless, Daisy struggles to make a home for herself and her son. Just when she seems poised to take control and put the baggage of her past behind her, complications arise when the towering frame of Daisy's deliciously handsome college crush strolls into town. His unexpected attention makes her feel alive, yet she's been burned by love once and isn't sure she can take the heat. As undeniable passions rise, so do the stakes, and Daisy can't stand to lose another round.... A compelling tale of life, love, and hope.

Book excerpt: This enthralling work of scholarship strips away abstractions to reveal the hidden--and not always stoic--face of the "goodwives" of colonial America. In these pages we encounter the awesome burdens--and the considerable power--of a New England housewife's domestic life and witness her occasional forays into the world of men. We see her borrowing from her neighbors, loving her husband, raising--and, all too often, mourning--her children, and even attaining fame as a heroine of frontier conflicts or notoriety as a murderess. Painstakingly researched, lively with scandal and homely detail, Good Wives is history at its best.

Book excerpt: In 2012, SABR named F.C. Lane as an honoree of the Chadwick Award, given to baseball's greatest researchers. Lane (1896-1984) was the editor and a prolific writer for Baseball Magazine from 1912 through 1937, and then served as editor of the Little Red Book of Major League baseball through 1948. The author of hundreds of editorials, interviews and articles about how the game was or should be played, Lane wrote forward-thinking pieces about, for example, how batting average could be misleading, opining that different batting outcomes should have different weights. It would be a few more generations before his wisdom began to win the day. Lane authored several books in his day but Batting was the only one on baseball. First published in 1925, Batting collects the wisdom and insights of over 250 hitters and baseball figures. Lane interviewed extensively and compiled tips and advice on everything from batting stances to beanballs. Legendary baseball figures such as Ty Cobb, Casey Stengel, Cy Young, Walter Johnson, Rogers Hornsby, and Babe Ruth reveal the secrets of such integral and interesting parts of the game as how to choose a bat, the ways to beat a slump, common baseball player superstitions, how to outguess the pitcher, even the best way to deal with unhappy fans and the press. The ebook edition includes all the text of the original classic (along with accompanying advertisements), and the biographical introduction written by Frederick Ivor-Campbell for the 2001 paperback edition. The index of names by Leverett T. Smith Jr. is also included in the ebook edition, though sans page numbers of course (ebooks do not have fixed page lengths).
