Book excerpt: Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.

The text addresses the changing family structure and takes the stance that parents and educators should be partners rather than combatants. Listening skills and positive communication are the heart of building positive relationships between family members and professionals. This text explains how to handle parent - teacher conferences, progress reports, group meetings, parent training, and planning programs. This fourth edition takes an in-depth look at fostering the best relationship between teachers and parents. Book excerpt: Gifted students with disabilities, also referred to as twice-exceptional children, need the strategies in Twice-Exceptional Gifted Children: Understanding, Teaching, and Counseling Gifted Students in order to find success in the regular classroom. By offering a thorough discussion of twice-exceptional students based on research into how gifted students with disabilities learn, the author helps teachers and education professionals develop a broad understanding of the complex issues associated with gifted students who have disabilities. This comprehensive text provides an overview of who these students are, how teachers can tap into their strengths and weaknesses, and what educational strategies should be implemented to help these students succeed in school and beyond. The book will guide a collaborative team step-by-step through the process of identifying students' needs, selecting modifications and accommodations, and developing a comprehensive plan to meet the diverse needs of twice-exceptional children. By implementing the strategies suggested in this book, teachers of twice-exceptional gifted students can ensure these students do not just survive in the classroom, but thrive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Positron Emission Tomography is a nuclear medicine technique first used to study the brain. Several decades ago, PET scanners design and performance have improved considerably: number of detectors has increased from 20 to 20,0000, axial field of view from 2 to 20 cm, spatial resolution has improved from 25 to 5 mm, sensitivity has increased of about 1000 fold. At the same time, clinical applications have grown dramatically. In the first section of this book the authors review some of developments in PET instrumentation, with emphasis on data acquisition, processing and image formation. In the second section authors expose examples of applications in human research. In the last section authors describe applications in assessment and prediction of oncological treatment response.
