Excerpt: ...natural temptation, into an inveterate habit. The more common result, however, of this vicious practice is a premature stimulation of the sexual nature, which throws youth of both sexes either into habits of early licentiousness, or into a morbid condition of mental impurity. An experienced physician writes: --' The earliest and most frequent cause of disorder of the generative apparatus is the practice of self'abuse, the tendency to which is strongest about the age of puberty. Excitement is increased by the conversation and thoughts which are indulged in, and it is apt to be unchecked by the moral control which has not yet acquired its proper influence. Children are often induced to the pernicious practice by their companions, who may be as ignorant as themselves of the wrong and mischief they are doing. It would be a very good thing if those who have the charge of boys were less scrupulous in giving warning upon this matter. Much trouble and anxiety might be spared by timely advice seriously and kindly given. An extensive acquaintance through years with those who are just come from our schools, has impressed the importance of this matter upon me.' Prof. Humphrey in Holmes's Practical Surgery. Dangers thus existing which may threaten the youngest child, the necessity of guidance, the formation of good habits, and the inculcation of self-respect even in childhood, is evident. At an early age self-control can be taught. It is a principle which grows by exercise. The more the brain asserts its power of Will over the automatic actions of the body, the stronger may become the control of reason over sensations and instincts. The neglect of children at this early age, is a direct cause of the corruption of the next stage of life. The lad of..

Excerpt: ...purity of the family relation, and is the foundation of social and national welfare. It is supported by sound principles of physiology, by historical study of the rise and fall of nations, and by a consideration of the evils of our present age. The lessons of the past and present, our clearer knowledge of cause and effect, alike prove the wisdom of the highest religious teaching, viz., that the faithful union of strong and pure young manhood and womanhood is the only element out of which a strong and durable nation can grow. PART II. I Having ascertained the standard of morality which should be our guide in the education of youth, as shown by the laws of human physiology and social growth, another aspect of the question demands consideration. The present subject may be summed up in two great questions, viz.: First, is Virtue desirable? Secondly, is Virtue practicable? We have shown in the preceding investigation that the control of the sexual passion, and its guidance by Reason--which we name Virtue--is of fundamental importance; that it is essential to individual health, to the happiness of the family, to the purity of society, and the growth of a strong nation. Virtue, therefore, is desirable. It remains to consider whether it be practicable. This book is addressed to parents. Medical experience has shown me that the knowledge here offered is required by them. A clear practical view is needed, of the moral aim which they should set before themselves in the education of their sons as well as daughters. No vagueness or doubt should exist in relation to (83) fundamental principles of education. Methods may change; no inflexible rule can be laid down. Enlarging experience, enlightened by love, will vary infinitely the adaptations needed in...

Book excerpt: Studying a broader period than its contemporaries, this comprehensive study reveals a neglected tradition of British women’s writing from the Victorian era to the sexual revolution of the 1960s. Outspoken Women brings together the many and varied non-fictional writings of British women on sexual attitudes and behaviour, beginning nearly a hundred years prior to the ‘second wave’ of feminism. Commentators cover a broad range of perspectives and include Darwinists, sexologists, and campaigners against the spread of VD, as well as women writing about their own lives and experiences. Covering all aspects of the debate from marriage, female desire and pleasure, to lesbianism, prostitution, STDs, and sexual ignorance, Lesley A. Hall studies how the works of this era didn’t just criticise male-defined mores and the ‘dark side’ of sex, but how they increasingly promoted the possibility of a brighter view and an informed understanding of the sexual life. Hall’s remarkable anthology is an engaging examination of this fascinating subject and it provides students and scholars with an invaluable source of primary material.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whose job is it to teach the public about sex? Parents? The churches? The schools? And what should they be taught? These questions have sparked some of the most heated political debates in recent American history, most recently the battle between proponents of comprehensive sex education and those in favor of an "abstinence-only" curriculum. Kristy Slominski shows that these questions have a long, complex, and surprising history. Teaching Moral Sex is the first comprehensive study of the role of religion in the history of public sex education in the United States. The field of sex education, Slominski shows, was created through a collaboration between religious sex educators-primarily liberal Protestants, along with some Catholics and Reform Jews-and "men of science"-namely physicians, biology professors, and social scientists. She argues that the work of early religious sex educators laid the foundation for both sides of contemporary controversies that are now often treated as disputes between "religious" and "secular" Americans. Slominski examines the religious contributions to national sex education organizations from the late nineteenth century to the early twenty-first. Far from being a barrier to sex education, she demonstrates, religion has been deeply embedded in the history of sex education, and its legacy has shaped the terms of current debates. Focusing on religion uncovers an under-recognized cast of characters-including Quaker and Unitarian social purity reformers, military chaplains, and the Young Men's Christian Association- who, Slominski deftly shows, worked to make sex education more acceptable to the public through a strategic combination of progressive and restrictive approaches to sexuality. Teaching Moral Sex highlights the essential contributions of religious actors to the movement for sex education in the United States and reveals where their influence can still be felt today.
