This book was released on 1997 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before Operation Desert Shield/Storm (ODS/S), the last major mobilization of reservists occurred almost 50 years ago during the Korean conflict. Thus, reservists serving in the Selected Reserve Components before 1990 had largely no experience with a large-scale reserve mobilization. In fact, the likelihood of a reserve mobilization was probably viewed as so remote that it played almost no role in decisions to join or remain in the reserve forces. The ODS/S mobilization, and the subsequent involvement of reservists in various other operations, ranging from the Army Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) Sinai Initiative to the current effort in Bosnia, have changed this perception in important ways. It is clear that the Reserve Components are expected to play an important role in responding to regional crises, as well as in peacekeeping, peace enforcement, and humanitarian assistance operations. For instance, since 1991, Reserve Component members were activated or volunteered to support Operation Restore Democracy (Haiti), Provide Promise and Deny Flight (Bosnia), Restore Hope (Somalia), Southern Watch (Southern Iraq), and Provide Comfort (Northern Iraq). Mobilizations are likely to be more frequent in the future and are likely to have important effects on reservists' attitudes and the degree of support they receive from their families and civilian employers.
Book Synopsis The Politics of Military Families by : René Moelker
Download or read book The Politics of Military Families written by René Moelker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-14 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the politics of military families in relation to the tensions between the state, military organization, and private life. It elaborates on the tensions between the advent of challenging worldwide deployment for the military and the prominence of the home front. The volume aims to understand the dynamics of conflict and change within triad figurations at the macro (society), meso (organizational), and micro (family) level and is guided by the following overarching research questions: What are the key issues in the three-party dynamics? What tensions exist in these dynamics? How do actors seek to arrive at a balance? What initiatives for change are made? With contributions from international scholars, who examine the workings of politics in military families at all three levels, the book argues that members within military families deal with shifting power balances and these are impacted by demands from organizations and the state. This book will be of much interest to students of military studies, sociology, organizational studies and politics.

Book Synopsis The Effect of Mobilization on Retention of Enlisted Reservists After Operation Desert Shield/Storm by : Sheila Nataraj Kirby
Download or read book The Effect of Mobilization on Retention of Enlisted Reservists After Operation Desert Shield/Storm written by Sheila Nataraj Kirby and published by RAND Corporation. This book was released on 1998 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report discusses how reserve mobilizations affect the attitudes, perceptions, & behaviors of reservists, their families, & their employers. Understanding the effects of mobilizations & deployments is important because of the potential effects on retention, future recruiting, & the eventual reshaping of the reserve force in perhaps unforeseen ways. Using the 1991 Guard/Reserve Survey of Officers & Enlisted Personnel, the authors examine whether & how factors affecting reenlistment have changed since 1986--the last large-scale survey of reserve forces; examine the differences in behavior of mobilized & nonmobilized reservists to determine whether mobilization itself has had an effect on retention; & investigate whether mobilizations affected reservists' work, family environments, & economic positions.
