This book was released on 1996 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to state department of transportation (DOT) administrators and mid- to upper-level managers; researchers; cost estimators; bridge and general management system engineers; and bridge design, construction, inspection and maintenance engineers; as well as to private industry professionals involved in developing bridge management system (BMS) software and collecting and analyzing BMS cost data. The state of the practice for collecting and managing cost data for BMS is described based on data obtained from a review of the literature and a survey of the state DOTs. This report describes BMS cost data for work done by contract and in-house forces for state and local governments. It includes project-level cost estimation as well as the collection and management of data for network- level cost models. The various cost estimate methods for replacement; maintenance, repair and rehabilitation; and emergency work are analyzed as are the special requirements of user costs and other special economic data.

Book Synopsis Bridge Designs to Reduce and Facilitate Maintenance and Repair by : George O. Shanafelt
Download or read book Bridge Designs to Reduce and Facilitate Maintenance and Repair written by George O. Shanafelt and published by Transportation Research Board National Research. This book was released on 1985 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An attempt is made to develop a body of information on bridge design concepts and details that will lead to reduced life-cycle maintenance costs and facilitate repair procedures. This includes accessibility, material selection, corrosion protection, ease of rehabilitation, and continued bridge use during retrofit. Concepts to increase communication among design, construction, and maintenance personnel to improve maintenance are proposed. A literature review was made to gather information on bridge design concepts and details related to maintainability. Chapter 1 of this report introduces the study and chapters 2 through 5 present the engineering related concerns: accessibility, design and use of materials, corrosion protection, and designing for rehabilitation and continued use. Chapter 6 presents administrative-related concerns such as effective organizational communication. Conclusions are presented in chapter 7.
Book Synopsis Numerical Modelling of Discrete Materials in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Earth Sciences by : Heinz Konietzky

This book was released on 2004-10-15 with total page 1022 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fully up-to-date volume, important new developments and applications of discrete element modelling are highlighted and brought together for presentation at the First International UDEC/3DEC Symposium. Papers covered the following key areas: * behaviour of masonry structures (walls, bridges, towers, columns) * stability and deformation of tunnels and caverns in fractured rock masses * geomechanical modelling for mining and waste repositories * rock reinforcement design (anchors, shotcrete, bolts) * mechanical and hydro-mechanical behaviour of dams and foundations * rock slope stability, deformation and failure mechanisms * modelling of fundamental rock mechanical problems * modelling of geological processes * constitutive laws for fractured rock masses and masonry structures * dynamic behaviour of discrete structures. Numerical Modelling of Discrete Materials in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Earth Sciences provides an ultra-modern, in-depth analysis of discrete element modelling in a range of different fields, thus proving valuable reading for civil, mining, and geotechnical engineers, as well as other interested professionals.

Book Synopsis Bridge Evaluation, Repair and Rehabilitation by : A.S. Nowak
Download or read book Bridge Evaluation, Repair and Rehabilitation written by A.S. Nowak and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evaluation, repair and rehabilitation of bridges are increasingly important topics in the effort to deal with the deteriorating infrastructure. For example, in the United States about 40 percent of the nation's 570,000 bridges are classified, according to the Federal Highway Administra tion's (FHW A) criteria, as deficient and in need of rehabilitation and replacement. In other countries the situation is similar. FHW A estimates the cost of a bridge replacement and reha bilitation program at 50 billion dollars. The major factors that have contributed to the present situation are: the age, inadequate maintenance, increasing load spectra and environmental contamination. The deficient bridges are posted, repaired or replaced. The disposition of bridges involves clear economical and safety implications. To avoid high costs of replacement or repair, the evaluation must accurately reveal the present load carrying capacity of the struc ture and predict loads and any further changes in the capacity (deterioration) in the applicable time span. Accuracy of bridge evaluation can be improved by using the recent developments in bridge diagnostics, structural tests, material tests, structural analysis and probabilistic methods. There is a need for an international exchange of advanced experience to increase the research effi ciency. The Workshop is organized on the premise that the exchange of existing American and European experience in the area of bridge evaluation, repair and rehabilitation is beneficial for both parties involved.

Book Synopsis Bridge Preservation Treatments and Best Practices by : Mark Bowman
Download or read book Bridge Preservation Treatments and Best Practices written by Mark Bowman and published by . This book was released on 2016-12-31 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aging of the bridge infrastructure inventory has caused Department of Transportation agencies to critically focus on bridge preservation and replacement needs, while often faced with constrained or reduced budgets every year. A strategic bridge preventive maintenance program has been shown to be an effective way to preserve and extend bridge service lives. A bridge preventive maintenance program is related to routine practices that are repeated with some particular frequency to obtain the best results. Moreover, it is well known that frequently performing less-costly preventive maintenance activities results in a more efficient alternative than performing fewer expensive repairs/rehabilitation or even replacements of bridge elements. The objective of this research was to review bridge maintenance activities recommended by specialized literature, to examine maintenance activities currently conducted by the various INDOT districts, and also to review maintenance activities performed by several other DOT agencies. Based on the results of this review, a list of ten new and enhanced bridge preventive maintenance activities was identified to improve the effectiveness of bridge maintenance operations in Indiana. The required conditions and frequency to perform each activity was analyzed, and the cost and benefit of such operations was studied to ensure that the proposed activities are economically feasible and sustainable.
