Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of General Cost Structure Analysis is the quantitative analysis of cost structures with a minimum of a priori assumptions on firm technology and on firm behaviour. The study develops an innovative line of attack building on the primal characterisation of the firm's generalised shadow cost minimisation program. The resulting Flexible Cost Model (FCM) is highly conducive to modern panel data techniques and allows for a flexible specification not only of firm technology but also of firm behaviour, as shadow prices can be made input-, time- and firm-specific. FCM is applied to a panel dataset on several hundred of the largest banking institutions in the G-5 (France, Germany, Japan, United Kingdom, United States) in the 1989-1996 period. The main empirical results are summarised. In particular, FCM provides new insights into the existence of scale economies in banking and an assessment of the extent of excess labour in the G-5 banking industries, particularly as a consequence of labour market rigidities in a context of rapidly declining technology prices. FCM also provides an evaluation of the sources of the cost advantage of American and British banks in comparison to Continental European banks.

This book was released on 1996 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From banks to brokerage houses, profitability is the watchword for today's financial institutions. The search is unceasing for better ways to achieve it, maintain it, and defend it against competitive pressures. For some time, managers within financial institutions have been aware of a powerful new tool for cost analysis developed in the manufacturing sector: activity-based costing (ABC). A handful of financial services consultants around the world have been helping their financial services clients to migrate ABC from its birthplace in the manufacturing sector to the world of financial services, where it can be immensely effective as a basis for strategic decisions. It was time for a book that clarifies for general executives how ABC works and what contributions it can make to the formation of winning strategies. And it was time for a practical, comprehensive book that initiates management accountants in the financial services sector into this new approach to cost analysis. The Price Waterhouse Guide to Activity-Based Costing for Financial Institutions is that book. The ABC approach is particularly effective because financial services companies sell services as well as products. Profitability measurement cannot rely on older, more traditional methods of cost accounting, techniques that focus on the costs of raw materials and labor. The Price Waterhouse Guide to Activity-Based Costing for Financial Institutions shows how these firms can use the breakthrough concept of ABC in the same way that other companies manage all activities from the top down, more efficiently. This book explains the methods of this technique, with detailed guidelines that help firms plan for costs before theyoccur, rather than simply monitoring them.

This book was released on 2006-06-18 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an academic book that explains in reahty, examines theoretically, and analyzes statistically information system investment in the banking industry with regard to the process of the information technology revolution. This kind of comprehensive research on the banking industry is the first in the world. It could be seen as an application study for Japanese financial deregulation after 1997. However, our project, the Workshop of Information System Investment, is a theoretical research venture, consisting originally, when it began in 1994, of economists and computer scientists. It aimed to measure the effect of com puter hardware and software on the modern economy, based on the microdata of each firm, and to extend the frontiers of economic science. It was, coin- dentally, the time when this project began full-scale operation, in July 1997, that the voluntary closure of Yamaichi Securities was decided. The failure of the Hokkaido Takushoku Bank was disclosed in November of the same year, and the breakdown, temporary nationalization, buying out, and mergers of several banks succeeded one another. Our research therefore suddenly got into the social spotlight on the application stage. Part I is the first history and strategic guidelines of information systems in the banking industry. Part II summarizes the economic analyses of informa tion system investment in the United States, Europe, and Japan. These parts are foundations for the statistical analyses in Part III.

Download or read book Cost-Benefit Analysis for Development written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has been continuously undertaking measures to enhance the effectiveness of its operations. To improve projects both at the preparation and implementation stages, ADB issued the Guidelines for Economic Analysis of Projects in 1997 as a means to enhancing project quality at entry. The conduct of proper economic analysis helps ensure the efficient use of development funds and public resources and thereby increase aid effectiveness. This practical guide is a supplement to the Guidelines for the Economic Analysis of Projects. It provides an overview of recent methodological developments in cost-benefit analysis as well as suggested improvements in the economic analysis of projects in selected sectors through case studies. These case studies illustrate the application of suggested methodologies, taking into account sector-specific needs, as well as difficulties faced by practitioners in terms of data and time constraints during project processing. It also aims to contribute to ADB’s capacity building initiatives as this will be the main reference material for conduct of economic analysis.
