Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travels of Cosmo the Third, Grand Duke of Tuscany, Through England During the Reign of King Charles the Second (1669): Tr, From the Italian Manuscript in the Laurentian Library at Florence, to Which Is Prefixed, a Memoir of His Life Evening ot'his death ha baa 'exhib'ited himself iip'on' the stage, before a very numerous audience 111 the chagaqtef of; an ass, ' andletting fall a burthen of pots, hue received the niositfiratifyingd applause for the natural manner in which he had performed his part. His widow and her child were invited to floreiice, and Francisco mariaivi I, andvlast duke of that State, had consent ed to this measure in the hope of saving his country h'om the usurpation of the Pope, after his death. He was a most learned and virtuous prince, but the latter end of his life, though spent in solitude and the cultivation of learn ing, 'was rendered miserable by the base attempts of Urban VIII. To indiice the unfortunate prince to sign an acknowledgment of the supremacy of the Papa] throne, by which his dominions might, at his death, he made over, to that power. The weakness and folly of Cosmo gave a validity to this instru ment, and he lost an undoubted claim to the Duchy b'urbino, by not having sufficient resolution todenforce his right against the Papal usurpation. The princess was educated by the grand duchess Cristina, with too much attachment to the ceremonies of the Catholic faith and the marriage be tween Ferdinand and Vittoria was solemnized privately in the Pitti palace.
