Book excerpt: The material in this book is designed to satisfy the appetites of all ages, nationalities, races, and creeds irrespective of geographic location, socioeconomic standing, political ideology, or religious persuasion. Unquestionably, all humans are deeply intrigued and fascinated by the realities of life and death, of life before life, and life after death. It beams a panoramic light on man’s metamorphic cosmic journey, highlighting the truth that man lived in preaquatic and aquatic worlds before dying to the aquatic world of his mother’s womb to be resurrected (born again) in the postaquatic womb of Mother Earth then continues his journey into extraterrestrial worlds unknown. This is not merely a dispenser of knowledge but an insightful impartation of uncommon wisdom on death and rebirth to readers ascending their metamorphic ladder toward unity-consciousness, acquiring increasingly greater social, intellectual, and spiritual spheres of influence, culminating in spiritual and material prosperity. The author’s envisioned wild success is that all his wisdom-seeking readers will be transformed into wisdom-finding, lifelong learners who ascend the consciousness hierarchy to enter their promised royal destiny as enlightened princes and princesses of the universe, seamlessly flowing in divine omnipotent and omniscient energy fields as heirs of God and joint heir with Christ.

Book excerpt: Suicide is devastating. It is an assault on our ideas of what living is about. In Contemplating Suicide Gavin Fairbairn takes fresh look at suicidal self harm. His view is distinctive in not emphasising external facts: the presence or absence of a corpse, along with evidence that the person who has become a corpse, intended to do so. It emphasises the intentions that the person had in acting, rather than the consequences that follow from those actions. Much of the book is devoted to an attempt to construct a natural history of suicidal self harm and to examine some of the ethical issues that it raises. Fairbairn sets his philosophical reflections against a background of practical experience in the caring professions and uses a storytelling approach in offering a critique of the current language of self harm along with some new ways of thinking. Among other things he offers cogent reasons for abandoning the mindless use of terms such as attempted suicide and parasuicide , and introduces a number of new terms including cosmic roulette , which he uses to describe a family of human acts in which people gamble with their lives. By elaborating a richer model of suicidal self harm than most philosophers and most practitioners of caring professions currently inhabit, Fairbairn has contributed to the development of understanding in this area. Among other things a richer model and vocabulary may reduce the likelihood that those who come into contact with suicidal self harm, will believe that familiarity with the physical facts of the matter - the actions of the suicider and the presence or absence of a corpse - is always sufficient to justify a definite conclusion about the nature of the self harming act.

Book excerpt: Mutually assured destruction has led to decades of peace between humanity and the Trisolarans, but a new force is awakening and this delicate balance can no longer hold... Half a century after the Doomsday Battle, the uneasy balance of Dark Forest Deterrence keeps the Trisolaran invaders at bay. Earth enjoys unprecedented prosperity due to the infusion of Trisolaran knowledge. With human science advancing daily and the Trisolarans adopting Earth culture, it seems that the two civilizations will soon be able to co-exist peacefully as equals without the terrible threat of mutually assured annihilation. But the peace has also made humanity complacent. Cheng Xin, an aerospace engineer from the early twenty-first century, awakens from hibernation in this new age. She brings with her knowledge of a long-forgotten program dating from the beginning of the Trisolar Crisis, and her very presence may upset the delicate balance between two worlds. Will humanity reach for the stars or die in its cradle? Death's End is the New York Times bestselling conclusion to Cixin Liu's tour-de-force series that began with The Three-Body Problem. Book excerpt: This volume was first published by Inter-Disciplinary Press in 2011. The narratives produced in this volume, not only demonstrated that we, as human beings, are narrative animals in our need to make sense of ourselves and our situations; they also demonstrated that we are, in normal life as well as in our narrated selves, embodied, bodily and ecologically, and embedded into interpersonal, and herewith socio-cultural, situations. In striving for a profound understanding of suicide and suicide attempts, as a comprehensive and/or meaningful behaviour, it becomes clear: although we may never know, exactly, why a person kills herself or which cultural concept of suicide is the ultimate one, we will always suspect that we can at least make some sense of it. Within the pages of this eBook, the reader will find perspectives from many disciplines, each with a common goal - Making Sense of Suicide.

Book excerpt: Emile Durkheim's On Suicide (1897) was a groundbreaking book in the field of sociology. Traditionally, suicide was thought to be a matter of purely individual despair but Durkheim recognized that the phenomenon had a social dimension. He believed that if anything can explain how individuals relate to society, then it is suicide: Why does it happen? What goes wrong? Why do certain social, religious or racial groups have higher incidences of suicide than others? As Durkheim explored these questions he became convinced that abnormally high or low levels of social integration lead to an increased likelihood of suicide. On Suicide was the result of his extensive research. Divided into three parts - individual reasons for suicide, social forms of suicide and the relation of suicide to society as a whole - Durkheim's revelations have fascinated, challenged and informed readers for over a century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the continuation of the book Suicide in Modern Literature, edited by Josefa Ros Velasco. Considering the positive reception of this book, Ros Velasco launches the second part, entitled The Contemporary Writer and their Suicide. This time, leading representatives of various disciplines analyze the literary, philosophical, and biographical works of contemporary writers worldwide who attempted to commit suicide or achieved their goal, looking for covert and overt clues about their intentions in their writings. This book aims to continue shedding light on the social and structural causes that lead to suicide and on the suicidal mind, but also to show that people assiduous to writing usually reflect their intentions to commit suicide in their writings, to explain how these frequently veiled intentions can be revealed and interpreted, and to highlight the potential of artistic, philosophical, and autobiographical writing as a tool to detect suicidal ideation and prevent its consummation in vulnerable people. This book analyzes several case studies and their allusions to their contexts and the socio-structural and environmental violence and pressures they suffered, expressions of their will and agency, feelings of dislocation between the individual, reality, and existential alienation, and literary styles, writing techniques, and metaphorical language.
