Book Synopsis Transcending Conquest by : Stephanie Wood
Download or read book Transcending Conquest written by Stephanie Wood and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2012-08-31 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Columbus arrived on North American shores in 1492, and Cortés had replaced Moctezuma, the Aztec Nahua emperor, as the major figurehead in central Mexico by 1521. Five centuries later, the convergence of “old” and “new” worlds and the consequences of colonization continue to fascinate and horrify us. In Transcending Conquest, Stephanie Wood uses Nahuatl writings and illustrations to reveal Nahua perspectives on Spanish colonial occupation of the Western Hemisphere. Mesoamerican peoples have a strong tradition of pictorial record keeping, and out of respect for this tradition, Wood examines multiple examples of pictorial imagery to explore how Native manuscripts have depicted the European invader and colonizer. She has combed national and provincial archives in Mexico and visited some of the Nahua communities of central Mexico to collect and translate Native texts. Analyzing and interpreting changes in indigenous views and attitudes throughout three hundred years of foreign rule, Wood considers variations in perspectives--between the indigenous elite and the laboring classes, and between those who resisted and those who allied themselves with the European intruders. Transcending Conquest goes beyond the familiar voices recorded by scribes in central colonial Mexico and the Spanish conquerors to include indigenous views from the outlying Mesoamerican provinces and to explore Native historical narratives from the sixteenth through the eighteenth century. Wood explores how evolving sentiments in indigenous communities about increasing competition for resources ultimately resulted in an anti-Spanish discourse, a trend largely overlooked by scholars--until now. Transcending Conquest takes us beyond the romantic focus on the deeds of the Spanish conqueror to show how the so-called “conquest” was limited by the ways that Native peoples and their descendants reshaped the historical narrative to better suit their memories, identities, and visions of the future.

Book Synopsis Indian Conquistadors by : Laura E. Matthew
Download or read book Indian Conquistadors written by Laura E. Matthew and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2014-02-13 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conquest of the New World would hardly have been possible if the invading Spaniards had not allied themselves with the indigenous population. This book takes into account the role of native peoples as active agents in the Conquest through a review of new sources and more careful analysis of known but under-studied materials that demonstrate the overwhelming importance of native allies in both conquest and colonial control. In Indian Conquistadors, leading scholars offer the most comprehensive look to date at native participation in the conquest of Mesoamerica. The contributors examine pictorial, archaeological, and documentary evidence spanning three centuries, including little-known eyewitness accounts from both Spanish and native documents, paintings (lienzos) and maps (mapas) from the colonial period, and a new assessment of imperialism in the region before the Spanish arrival. This new research shows that the Tlaxcalans, the most famous allies of the Spanish, were far from alone. Not only did native lords throughout Mesoamerica supply arms, troops, and tactical guidance, but tens of thousands of warriors—Nahuas, Mixtecs, Zapotecs, Mayas, and others—spread throughout the region to participate with the Spanish in a common cause. By offering a more balanced account of this dramatic period, this book calls into question traditional narratives that emphasize indigenous peoples’ roles as auxiliaries rather than as conquistadors in their own right. Enhanced with twelve maps and more than forty illustrations, Indian Conquistadors opens a vital new line of research and challenges our understanding of this important era.
Download or read book 2048 written by Carlos Alberto and published by Fulton Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-01-19 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2029, a mysterious billionaire known as Mr. X manages to build the first quantum computer. He calls it the Maitrevac. The computer makes its debut in the Atacama Desert in Chile, where it produces the first totally immersive simulation. Mann, who won the contest to participate in the computer experience, must survive the simulation for fifteen minutes in order to earn a million dollars. During the simulation, an accident in the servers causes every second to double the duration of the previous one. In the real world, only forty-eight seconds elapse, but for Mann, they represent more than a million years. What happens during this time? Mann's experience will be revealed little by little. Meanwhile, in the real world, Mr. X will exponentiate his intelligence and technology to embark upon a crusade to conquer the earth and the entire universe. Will X succeed in his absolute conquest of objective reality? Before he does, he will first have to face his own interior reality--the same reality Mann has had to face in solitude. This is a science fiction and spiritual development novel. It's a proposal for a new genre--spiritual fiction. It runs about sixty-five thousand words, narrating the story as a series of chronicles that include elements from pop culture. The scientific aspects of the novel develop exponentially and are supported by science. The spiritual development of the characters is based on a few universal nonsectarian principles derived from Hindu and Buddhist philosophies. The characters of the book and some of the crucial scenes have been illustrated using 3-D concept art.
Book Synopsis Indigenous Intellectuals by : Gabriela Ramos
Download or read book Indigenous Intellectuals written by Gabriela Ramos and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2014-04-30 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Via military conquest, Catholic evangelization, and intercultural engagement and struggle, a vast array of knowledge circulated through the Spanish viceroyalties in Mexico and the Andes. This collection highlights the critical role that indigenous intellectuals played in this cultural ferment. Scholars of history, anthropology, literature, and art history reveal new facets of the colonial experience by emphasizing the wide range of indigenous individuals who used knowledge to subvert, undermine, critique, and sometimes enhance colonial power. Seeking to understand the political, social, and cultural impact of indigenous intellectuals, the contributors examine both ideological and practical forms of knowledge. Their understanding of "intellectual" encompasses the creators of written texts and visual representations, functionaries and bureaucrats who interacted with colonial agents and institutions, and organic intellectuals. Contributors. Elizabeth Hill Boone, Kathryn Burns, John Charles, Alan Durston, María Elena Martínez, Tristan Platt, Gabriela Ramos, Susan Schroeder, John F. Schwaller, Camilla Townsend, Eleanor Wake, Yanna Yannakakis
Book Synopsis Hemispheric Indigeneities by : Miléna Santoro
Download or read book Hemispheric Indigeneities written by Miléna Santoro and published by University of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2018-11-01 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hemispheric Indigeneities is a critical anthology that brings together indigenous and nonindigenous scholars specializing in the Andes, Mesoamerica, and Canada. The overarching theme is the changing understanding of indigeneity from first contact to the contemporary period in three of the world’s major regions of indigenous peoples. Although the terms indio, indigène, and indian only exist (in Spanish, French, and English, respectively) because of European conquest and colonization, indigenous peoples have appropriated or changed this terminology in ways that reflect their shifting self-identifications and aspirations. As the essays in this volume demonstrate, this process constantly transformed the relation of Native peoples in the Americas to other peoples and the state. This volume’s presentation of various factors—geographical, temporal, and cross-cultural—provide illuminating contributions to the burgeoning field of hemispheric indigenous studies. Hemispheric Indigeneities explores indigenous agency and shows that what it means to be indigenous was and is mutable. It also demonstrates that self-identification evolves in response to the relationship between indigenous peoples and the state. The contributors analyze the conceptions of what indigeneity meant, means today, or could come to mean tomorrow.
Book Synopsis The Doctrine of Atonement by : Jack D. Kilcrease
Download or read book The Doctrine of Atonement written by Jack D. Kilcrease and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Post-Enlightenment theology has frequently rejected the historic Christian doctrine of substitutionary atonement. For theologians standing in the tradition of the Lutheran Confessions, rejection of substitutionary atonement is particularly problematic because it endangers the unconditional nature of the justification through faith. If one rejects vicarious satisfaction, then the only alternative is to make redemption dependent on what sinners do for themselves. In this study, Jack Kilcrease argues for substitutionary atonement within the perspective of what he calls the "Confessional Lutheran Paradigm." The author also critiques a wide variety of modern Lutheran theologians' understandings of atonement: Werner Elert, Gustaf Aulen, Gustaf Wingren, Robert Jenson, Eberhard Jungel, Wolfhart Pannenberg, and Gerhard Forde. As Kilcrease demonstrates, although these authors often give many fine theological insights, their distortion or misrepresentation of the doctrine of atonement carriers over to a problematic understanding of law, gospel, and justification through faith.
