Book excerpt: High Tc oxide superconductors such as Bi(Pb)-Sr-Ca-Cu-O (BSCCO) and Y-Ba-Cu-O (YBCO) systems are usually fabricated by sintering given mixtures of raw materials. Generally, sintering processing takes a longer heating time and the products are mechanically low strength and cannot be formed into complex shapes such as a coil, a curved fine tube or a fine rod. Another way to produce the ceramics is a glass-ceramic process in which the glasses prepared by melt-quenching are reheated for crystallization. A given mixture of raw materials in BSCCO is easily melted and quenched to form a given shape of glass, while that in YBCO is not glassified. This invaluable book has been written by authors from five countries. It presents a unique way to fabricate superconducting ceramics in BSCCO by glass-ceramic processing.

This book discusses all aspects of corrosion of ceramics, including environments, mechanisms, and materials, and the means to minimize or eliminate corrosion. The author compiles key findings and literature highlights from nearly a decade of scientific advancement, covering emerging techniques in corrosion analysis, characterization, and prediction. He provides at-a-glance coverage of national and international testing procedures for the evaluation of materials stability. The book covers the fundamentals of corrosion by gases, liquids, and solids of several ceramic materials including crystalline materials, glasses, composites, bioceramics, and advanced ceramics. It also discusses property/corrosion relationships and testing. Book excerpt: The second edition of Materials Degradation and Its Control by Surface Engineering continues the theme of the first edition, where discussions on corrosion, wear, fatigue and thermal damage are balanced by similarly detailed discussions on their control methods, e.g. painting and metallic coatings. The book is written for the non-specialist, with an emphasis on introducing technical concepts graphically rather than through algebraic equations. In the second edition, the graphic content is enhanced by an additional series of colour and monochrome photographs that illustrate key aspects of the controlling physical phenomena. Existing topics such as liquid metal corrosion have been extended and new topics such as corrosion inhibitors added.

Book excerpt: Delegates to the 3rd International Conference on Environmental and Economic Impact on Sustainable Development contributed the peer-reviewed papers contained in this book. The papers discuss the most serious problems affecting sustainable development. They consider the impact of economic constraints on the environment, taking into account the social aspects as well as the over-use of natural resources. Uncontrolled development can also result in damage to the environment in terms of the release of toxic substances and hazardous waste. Thus, attention is paid to issues related to whether some forms of development are compatible with environmental protection, particularly in cases of possible serious contamination and toxicity. The focus in the book is on more constructive and progressive approaches to the problems discussed, to ensure sustainability. The hope is that through the shared experiences of experts, we can learn from past failure, to avoid repeating similar mistakes, while attempting to prevent emerging threats to the environmental and ecological systems. Fundamental to these concepts are an analysis of the inherent risks and the development of appropriate strategies. The papers in this book cover such topics as: Environmental assessments; Environmental policies and planning; Water resources management; Natural resources management; Legislation and regulations; Development issues; Economic impact.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All Refractories Are Ceramics but Not All Ceramics Are Refractories Ceramics and refractories cover a wide range of fields and applications, and their relevance can be traced as far back as 24,000 BC to the first man-made piece of earthenware, and as recently as the late 1900s when ceramics and ceramic matrix composites were developed to withstand ultra-high temperatures. Beginning with a detailed history of ceramics, An Introduction to Ceramics and Refractories examines every aspect of ceramics and refractories, and explores the connection between them. The book establishes refractories as a class of ceramics with high fusion points, introduces the fundamentals of refractories and ceramics, and also addresses several applications for each. Understand Ceramic Properties and Refractory Behavior The book details applications for natural and synthetic ceramics, as well as traditional and engineering applications. It focuses on the various thermal and thermo-mechanical properties of ceramics, classifies refractories, describes the principles of thermodynamics as applied to refractories, and highlights new developments and applications in the ceramic and refractory fields. It also presents end-of-chapter problems and a relevant case study. Divided into three sections, this text: Introduces and details the applications of ceramics and refractories Discusses the selection of materials and the two stages in selection Describes the phase equilibriums in ceramic and refractory systems Outlines the three important systems: unary, binary, and ternary Considers corrosion of ceramics and refractories, failures in ceramics and refractories, and the design aspects Addresses bonding, structures of ceramics, defects in ceramics, and ceramics’ microstructures Covers the production of ceramic powders starting from the raw materials Explains four forming methods Highlights three types of thermal treatments Defines mechanical properties, and thermal and thermo-mechanical properties Classifies materials and designates classes Addressing topics that include corrosion, applications, thermal properties, and types of refractories, An Introduction to Ceramics and Refractories provides you with a basic knowledge of the fundamentals of refractories and ceramics, and presents a clear connection between refractory behavior and ceramic properties to the practicing engineer.

This book was released on 2018-08-20 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of promising glass forming compositions of high Tc superconducting Ba-Sr-Ca-Cu-O (BSCCO) materials were evaluated for their glass-ceramic crystallization ability. The BSCCO ceramics belonging to the class of superconductors in the Ba-Sr-Ca-Cu-O system were the focus of this study. By first forming the superconducting material as a glass, subsequent devitrification into the crystalline (glass-ceramic) superconductor can be performed by thermal processing of the glass preform body. Glass formability and phase formation were determined by a variety of methods in another related study. This study focused on the nucleation and crystallization of the materials. Thermal analysis during rapid cooling aids in the evaluation of nucleation and crystallization behavior. Melt viscosity is used to predict glass formation ability. Ethridge, E. C. and Kaukler, W. F.
