Book excerpt: Excerpt from Correspondence of Henry Laurens, of South Carolina Henry Laurens, a portion of whose correspondence will be found in this volume, was a native of Charleston, South Carolina, at which place he was born in the year 1723. His early life was devoted to mercantile pursuits, in which he gained much applause for his scrupulous attention to business. At the commencement of the revolutionary difficulties he was resident in Europe, where he used his utmost exertions to stay the violence of the ministerial party, and prevent the war; but finding that unconditional submission on the part of the colonists was the only method by which harmony could be effected, he returned to Carolina, determined to join his fortunes with those of his fellow-countrymen.
