Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the mechanisms of the Irish revolutionary Fenian Brotherhood in the early years of its existence. Drawing on a wide range of material from places as diverse as Rome and Toronto it seeks to set the Fenian struggle within the context of competing church and state influence in mid-nineteenth century Irish society. It is particularly strong on the transatlantic comparative dimensions of church, state and Fenian activity, and demonstrates how the Fenians managed to change, forever, the terms of Irish political and social debate.

Book excerpt: Ireland's revolution of 1848 has no proud place in the history of Irish nationalism, and the leader of the doomed enterprise, William Smith O'Brien, is not a celerated hero of his country's struggle for independence. Nevertheless, the O'Brien story is an important one. During most of his political career, O'Brien believed in the British Parliament's capacity to give good government in Ireland. His attempts to secure liberal reform were largely unseccessful, however, and he entered the 1840's with a growing conviction that the Irish Members were wasting their time at Westminster. In 1843, his extroardinary Commons campaign for justice for Ireland prefigured the tactics of Parnell, but the effort ended in disappointment and O'Brien joined the Repeal Association in October 1843. For the next five years he was a major political figure, first as O'Connell's loyal deputy, then as his critic and rival, and finally, in 1848, as the leader of a rebellion. O'Brien was an exceptionally brave politician whose sense of honor and duty sent him into the lion's den time and time again. However, his ignominious failure in 1848 meant that he could be despised by men who were not his betters- by British leaders who failed to govern well, and by Irish politicians, including many who called temselves nationalists, who did not share his attachmnent to the idea that they should govern themselves. -- Publisher description

Book excerpt: The Young Ireland Movement of the 1840's was one of the most influential in Irish history. Its leaders were the first to propose a theory of cultural nationalismothe idea that the Irish were racially differentiated from the English to the point that they must have separate political institutions. This not only led many of the Movement's leaders towards a radical republicanism, it also introduced contemporary ideas of romantic nationalism from Europe into Ireland for the first time. The author presents the first modern overview of the personalities and ideology of this crucial link in the chain of Irish nationalism.

Book excerpt: "Established in 1858, the Irish Republican Brotherhood was a secret, oath-bound movement dedicated to bringing about revolution in Ireland. This book is a result of a major conference to mark the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Irish Republican Brotherhood and includes essays on Fenianism in its diasporic, transnational and imperial context; political violence; republican ideology and popular politicisation; culture, religion and identity; and memory and commemoration. This is the first publication to consider Fenianism as the truly international phenomenon it represented and includes essays from international scholars assessing the impact of Fenianism - a movement founded in America by the Irish immigrant community - throughout Ireland, Britain, continental Europe, the Americas and Australasia. The book spans the full chronological range of Fenian movement, from its origins in the aftermath of the Young Ireland movement, through its existence as a mass revolutionary movement in the 1860's, the long period as an underground revolutionary conspiracy, culminating in its role as the driving force of the Irish revolution between 1916 and 1921. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text provides the context for Fenianism and a perspective on the social and political history of mid-Victorian Ireland. The Fenian movement of the mid-19th century is one of the central elements in the story of Irish nationalism. It was a decisive factor in the land war of the late 1870s, early 1880s, and in the evolution of Parnell's political career. It became a leading theme of the Anglo-Irish literary revival and it has continued to exert its influence on Irish republicanism in the 20th century.
