Book excerpt: Drag Reduction of Turbulent Flows by Additives is the first treatment of the subject in book form. The treatment is extremely broad, ranging from physicochemical to hydromechanical aspects. The book shows how fibres, polymer molecules or surfactants at very dilute concentrations can reduce the drag of turbulent flow, leading to energy savings. The dilute solutions are considered in terms of the physical chemistry and rheology, and the properties of turbulent flows are presented in sufficient detail to explain the various interaction mechanisms. Audience: Those active in fundamental research on turbulence and those seeking to apply the effects described. Fluid mechanical engineers, rheologists, those interested in energy saving methods, or in any other application in which the flow rate in turbulent flow should be increased.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this investigation was to obtain a correlation for drag reducing solutions in circular tubes under turbulent conditions. Data were taken for three polymer-solvent systems: polymethyl methacrylate V-100 (M[subscript v] ~ 110,000) in toluene, polyisobutylene L-200 (M[subscript v] ~ 4,700,000) in toluene, and polyisobutylene L-200 in cyclohexane. The data from the two polyisobutylene systems, together with other data on polymethyl methacrylate G (M[subscript v] ~ 1,500,000) in toluene and polyisobutylene L-80 (M[subscript v] ~ 860,000) in cyclohexane, were used to attempt to obtain the correlation. The V-100 solutions were not used because they were not drag reducing. The variables that were believed to affect drag, reduction were considered and three dimensionless groups were used as the correlating groups. These groups were: a generalized Reynolds Number (N[subscript Re]' ), a Deborah Number, which is the ratio of the relaxation time of the polymer molecules to a characteristic flow time of the system, and a friction factor ratio. Two different characteristic flow times were used: D/V and n/T[subscript w],which gave rise to two Deborah Numbers. Also, three friction factor ratios were considered. The data were studied by plotting two of the groups and using the third one as a parameter. Several concentrations of each polymer-solvent system were studied individually and the relationships obtained were compared to attempt to obtain a correlation independent of concentration....Several methods for predicting friction factors with some accuracy were developed, but these methods only applied to a given concentration of a system. A relationship between a modified shear stress and velocity that applied to all concentrations of a polymer-solvent system was also obtained, but this method- does not allow accurate predictions of pressure drops"--Abstract, pages vii-viii.

Book excerpt: The Symposium on "The Influence of Polymer Additives on Veloc ity and Temperature Fields" was proposed to the General Assem bly of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Me chanics (IUTAM) by the "Gesellschaft fur Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik" (GAMM). The Symposium was held under the auspices of IUTAM in association with the "Deutsche Rheologische Ge sellschaft" (DRG) with responsibility for the organization ly ing with B. Gampert (Universitat-GH-Essen). The main aim of this IUTAM Symposium was to consider the funda mental aspects of the phenomena that occur when small amounts of polymers are added to turbulent flows (turbulent drag re duction) and laminar porous media flows. In particular atten tion was devoted to - the influence of molecular parameters of the polymers and solution properties, especially the elongational viscosity, on turbulent flow and laminar porous media flow; the influence of polymers on the turbulence structure in polymer drag reduction

Book excerpt: This book explains theoretical derivations and presents expressions for fluid and convective turbulent flow of mildly elastic fluids in various internal and external flow situations involving different types of geometries, such as the smooth/rough circular pipes, annular ducts, curved tubes, vertical flat plates, and channels. Understanding the methodology of the analyses facilitates appreciation for the rationale used for deriving expressions of parameters relevant to the turbulent flow of mildly elastic fluids. This knowledge serves as a driving force for developing new ideas, investigating new situations, and extending theoretical analyses to other unexplored areas of the rheology of mildly elastic drag reducing fluids. The book suits a range of functions--it can be used to teach elective upper-level undergraduate or graduate courses for chemical engineers, material scientists, mechanical engineers, and polymer scientists; guide researchers unexposed to this alluring and interesting area of drag reduction; and serve as a reference to all who want to explore and expand the areas dealt with in this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five studies are presented in this publication: A comparison between the behaviour of polymer solutions and flow characteristics of linear elastico-viscous fluid models. The study shows that no linear model can predict consistently all the observed non-Newtonian phenomena of polymer solutions; Turbulent flow of dilute polymer solutions through an annulus. Experimental and theoretical results are presented; Measurements of the dynamic response of flowing polymer solutions with a vibrating torsional quartz crystal are presented. The dynamic elastico-viscous response is found to be independent of the flow characteristics and shear rates; Drag reduction in developing boundary layers by injection of polymer solutions. Reduction of local friction coefficients is of the order of 65 percent, however, energy losses in the injection region decrease the total drag reduction efficiency. Effect of the injection concentration and discharge, width of slot and mean stream velocity are found; Drag reduction and degradation tests of several polymer solutions are presented. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of this thesis was to investigate the drag reduction phenomenon in turbulent flow caused by random coiling macromolecules in 'dilute' solution. In particular, this thesis was concerned with the relationship of drag (or its reduction) to the size of the coils and their concentration, of two kinds of polymers differing significantly in chain flexibility: polyethylene oxide (PEO), the more flexible, and polyisobutylene (PIB), the less flexible. It was found that, within any given homologous polymer series, the ability of macromolecules to reduce drag improved drastically with increasing molecular weight. That is, the concentration of polymers in solution either in the absolute weight fraction or in the effective volume fraction required to yield a given percent drag reduction decreased rapidly with increasing molecular weight. It was further found that there always existed an optimum concentration for any given polymer system at which the observed drag reduction reached a maximum.
