Book excerpt: Excerpt from Antonio Allegri Da Correggio: From the German of Dr. Julius Meyer The present work originally appeared in 1870 in the "Allegemeines Kunstler-lexicon," of which comprehensive but tardy publication Dr. Julius Meyer was then the editor. It was, however, immediately republished in a separate form, with some additions and alterations, and it is from the reprinted volume, and not from the dictionary, that the English translation has been made. Miss Spencer, the translator, has found it necessary in some places to condense the text, but has always endeavoured to preserve the character of the original German as closely as possible. Since the appearance of Dr. Meyer's work, which thoroughly exhausted the knowledge gained upon the subject up to that time, two or three contributions to Correggio literature have been made. Of these, the most important are the second edition of Pietro Martini's "II Correggio," Parma, 1871, and Cav. Quirino Bigi's "Notizie di Antonio Allegri," etc, Modena, 1873. To quote Burck hardt, In Correggio first, Chiaroscuro becomes essential to the general expression of a pictorially combined whole; the stream of lights and reflections gives exactly the right expression to the special moment in nature. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Midsummer of Italian Art IN the first edition of Midsummer I stated that my Object was to provide a comprehensive account of the greatest Italian painters, which might serve both as a book Of reference for American travellers in Europe, and to revive the recollections Of what they had seen after their return. In revising my book I have consid ered the request Of my friends and critics for a more thorough and complete analysis of the works of Raphael and Michel Angelo, as the two artists in whom the pub lic takes the liveliest interest. I have also amended the account Of Leonardo da Vinci so as to introduce a state ment of every picture which can be ascribed to him on reasonable grounds. Certain additions have also been made to the account of Correggio, but the similarity of his designs makes a complete list of his paintings of less importance than the others. In order to make the book as perfect as possible, I have compared my previous statements with those of the most distinguished writers on the subject, and where I became satisfied that I was formerly in error I have made such changes as were necessary, giving credit to the proper authority in a foot-note. This applies, how ever, chiefly to the account of Raphael, and in a less degree to Leonardo and Correggio. There is no thor ough-going criticism of Michel Angelo's works that I can hear of, in any language, and my own statement would seem to be the first attempt in that direction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Renaissance Masters: The Art of Raphael, Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci, Titian, Correggio, Botticelli and Rubens When the Renaissance began we cannot tell. Far back in the Dark Ages we can see the spirit stirring, now manifesting itself here, now there, but always sternly repressed by the bigotry of the time. But when at length the human intellect broke its fetters, its advance was extremely rapid. Petrarch was already seventeen years of age when Dante died, yet, while the spirit of Dante is almost entirely medizeval, the spirit of Petrarch is almost en tirely classic. Still, as showing how the two spirits were intermingled, the very groundwork of Petrarch's poetry, is of the Middle Age. One of the peculiarities of the Middle Age was its constant yearning for the unattainable. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Painters of the School of Ferrara IN the following pages I have attempted to give a brief account of the famous school of painting that originated in F errara about the middle of the fifteenth century, and thence not only extended its influence to the other cities that owned the sway of the House of Este, but spread over all Emilia and Romagna, produced Correggio in Parma, and even shared in the making of Raphael at Urbino. Correggio himself is not included he is too great a figure in Italian art to be treated as merely the member of a local school; and he has already been the subject of a separate monograph in this series.
