Book Synopsis Case Studies in Environmental Science by : Larry Underwood
Download or read book Case Studies in Environmental Science written by Larry Underwood and published by Brooks Cole. This book was released on 1998 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Case Studies in Environmental Science is designed to promote grassroots awareness of global environmental issues through problem-solving analysis and verbal and written discussion of topics that pertain to seven regions of the United States and Canada. The twelve case studies present a range of views on selected environmental issues in a non-biased approach. Thought-provoking questions, commentaries, and readings have been included to stimulate students to investigate the issues in further detail beyond the presentation of each case study. The accompanying website provides the students with the tools and resources to go beyond the confines of the book and their geographic region. Updated monthly, the site will provide up-to-date links to resources and articles for each case in each region. Summaries of significant events in each region and for each issue will be provided with additional Critical Thinking questions designed to demonstrate the interrelationships between regions and issues.

Book Synopsis Genesis and Properties of Collapsible Soils by : Tom Dijkstra
Download or read book Genesis and Properties of Collapsible Soils written by Tom Dijkstra and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collapsing engineering soils are a formidable hazard around the world. These difficult materials also include some of the world's most fertile agricultural soils, fostering dense human populations which are therefore increasingly at risk. Despite an impressive literature on the engineering aspects of collapsing soils, these materials are coming under increasing scrutiny by scientists in other fields. This is most evidently the case with soil scientists, stratigraphers and sedimentologists. Past earth surface conditions have a direct influence on the detailed behaviour of collapsible soils: as a complement, these materials also provide detailed data on changing global climates. The selected papers presented here highlight the common ground between three scientific groups with a vested interest in a better understanding of collapsible soils.

Book Synopsis Fundamentals of Tree Ring Research by : James H. Speer
Download or read book Fundamentals of Tree Ring Research written by James H. Speer and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tree-ring dating (dendrochronology) is a method of scientific dating based on the analysis of tree-ring growth patterns. As author James Speer notes, trees are remarkable bioindicators. Although there are other scientific means of dating climatic and environmental events, dendrochronology provides the most reliable of all paleorecords. Dendrochronology can be applied to very old trees to provide long-term records of past temperature, rainfall, fire, insect outbreaks, landslides, hurricanes, and ice storms--to name only a few events. This comprehensive text addresses all of the subjects that a reader who is new to the field will need to know and will be a welcome reference for practitioners at all levels. It includes a history of the discipline, biological and ecological background, principles of the field, basic scientific information on the structure and growth of trees, the complete range of dendrochronology methods, and a full description of each of the relevant subdisciplines. Individual chapters address the composition of wood, methods of field and laboratory study, dendroarchaeology, dendroclimatology, dendroecology, dendrogeomorphology, and dendrochemistry. The book also provides thorough introductions to common computer programs and methods of statistical analysis. In the final chapter, the author describes "frontiers in dendrochronology," with an eye toward future directions in the field. He concludes with several useful appendixes, including a listing of tree and shrub species that have been used successfully by dendrochronologists. Throughout, photographs and illustrations visually represent the state of knowledge in the field.
