Book excerpt: Coral reefs are critical for biodiversity, food habitats and as tourist destinations, but they are in serious decline around the world. Humans are a major cause of this problem. Here we explore high school students' educational reef experiences with respect to specific learning outcomes. Students were surveyed and interviewed as they were trained in coral reef ecology and monitoring in both the classroom and at various sites in the Great Barrier Reef. The Three A's of Coastal and Marine Studies (Marine Education Society of Australasia) are awareness, attitudes and action. This presupposes a learning situation where a gain in knowledge (awareness) will lead to a change in attitude, and thereby improve positive personal actions toward marine environments. This research analyses the link between the knowledge-attitude-action variables in relation to the effect of direct reef experience. This work addressed the question of proximal relations between humans and coral reefs. It brought together literature and techniques from varying disciplines to generate statistical findings, while student accounts confirmed the learning value of structured activities underwater as part of reef trips.

This paper reports on a PhD research project which investigated marine education and learning with high school students in coral reef environments along the Queensland coast of Australia. The study explored relationships between the learning outcome variables of environmental knowledge (awareness), attitudes and the ecological agency skills of students who were trained in coral reef ecology in a classroom setting along with a structured learning experience of reef monitoring in offshore sites along the Great Barrier Reef in 2002 and 2003. The research investigated the question of whether experiential marine education can change the reported environmental knowledge, attitudes and ecological agency of the student participants. Some key data outcomes are presented and implications for effective marine education strategies and pedagogies are discussed concerning outdoor education and the effects of taking the students on field trips to a coral reef. Book excerpt: Background: This article concerns learning with high school students and the effect of snorkeling and coral reef monitoring at the Great Barrier Reef, Australia. The effectiveness of classroom learning, student-reef relationships and reef trips were investigated. Purpose: This paper presents selected student accounts of reef educational experiences and identifies reported relations of proximity as a focus for analysis. The concept of proximity is important to environmental education when one declared aim is a "rediscovery" of our connections to the world around us. Setting: The marine education research took place in offshore sites of the Great Barrier Reef, Australia from August 2002 to November 2003. Study Sample: The student participants in this study were enrolled in either a Year 11 or Year 12 at one of four Queensland high schools, two Catholic high schools and two state high schools. Intervention: Students interview responses were collected in situ when visits to the reef are added to students' classroom curriculum. Research Design: Qualitative; Interview. Control or Comparison Condition: This paper presents selected student accounts of reef educational experiences and addresses how we experience learning and if it is affected by the places and spaces in which we learn. Data Collection and Analysis: The data were collected with limited student interviews collected after an outdoor coral reef monitoring exercise. Transcripts of student responses were sorted into thematic categories and analyzed. Findings: Results indicate that, as a result of their reef experiences, students talk different reef relations into being--positioning reefs as being nearer, less far away, and, therefore, in more need of attention and care. Interview data provide evidence to support the argument that outdoor and underwater learning experiences are a necessary part of education for marine sustainability. The pedagogical intention of the Queensland Studies Authority Marine Studies syllabus, which mandates for fieldwork, is confirmed by qualitative student accounts of their learning experiences. Conclusion: This study represents an original contribution to marine education research in presenting senior high-school student accounts of their learning experiences in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. These qualitative data do confirm the pedagogical intent of the Queensland Studies Authority Marine Studies syllabus that mandates field experiences as a necessary part of curriculum. This research provides evidence that experiential learning in coral reefs is considered of value by the students themselves and senior Marine Studies field work should continue to be supported by schools and education systems in Queensland. It documents and explains the main human impacts on the Great Barrier Reef since European settlement in the region, focusing particularly on the century from 1860 to 1960 which has not previously been fully documented, yet which was a period of unprecedented exploitation of the ecosystem and its resources. The book describes the main changes in coral reefs, islands and marine wildlife that resulted from those impacts. Book excerpt: Background: The Reef education evaluation: environmental knowledge and reef experience report concerns PhD research about marine education, and the investigation of learning with high school students and the effect of coral reef monitoring marine experiential education interventions. The effectiveness of classroom learning and reef trips were investigated, as well as strategies to enhance high school students' environmental knowledge towards coral reef sustainability. Purpose: The work evaluates an outdoor marine education project, and if students' learning outcomes were altered. It discusses techniques used to explore links between coral reef environmental knowledge and reef monitoring experience. Setting: The marine education research took place in Queensland high school classrooms and offshore sites in the Great Barrier Reef, Australia from August 2002 to November 2003. Study Sample: Survey data was collected exclusively from a convenience sample of high school students attending five Queensland coastal area schools. The sample was composted of 389 students from grades 11 and 12. Their mean age was 16.0, 39% female, with 57% of the high school students being enrolled in marine studies classes. Intervention: Changes in students' environmental learning outcomes were evaluated when visits to the reef are added to students' classroom curriculum, so the learning interventions were a classroom presentation and reef monitoring experience. Research Design: Quasi-experimental; Statistical Modeling; Statistical Survey; Qualitative; Interview. Control or Comparison Condition: The study compared results of four groups with differing interventions, including a contrast/control group, which participated in none of the interventions. Data Collection and Analysis: The data were collected with pre/post-test survey questionnaires and limited student interviews. The quantitative analysis included SPSS exploratory statistics, Spearman's rho, t-test, one-way ANOVA and comparison of means. The interview responses were collected in situ, after the coral monitoring exercise, and a total of 118 students were interviewed. Transcripts of student responses were sorted into thematic categories and analyzed. Findings: The process is described that investigates the relationship between, environmental knowledge, reef experience and student groups. This investigation compared the results from groups whose experiences varied. The students' mean environmental knowledge score was a low 4.87 correct out of 9 on the pre-test. Group 1, having a reef ecology classroom presentation and reef monitoring experience, had the most change in environmental knowledge and the highest post-test score, while Group 4 (contrast group with no educational interventions) had the lowest. Students who had previous reef experience performed higher on the knowledge pre-test. Previous reef experience was significantly correlated to original environmental knowledge and change in environmental knowledge. Structured interviews: 1) presented the voices of student participants; and 2) added to the quantitative study validity. The students' voices enabled recognition of transformations in learning, and development of critical thinking. Student perspectives created an understanding of the extent direct reef experience makes in achieving changes in environmental knowledge or an ecological vision. Conclusion: An investigation procedure found evident increases in environmental knowledge responses with marine experiential education and previous reef experience is presented. The empirical and interview data substantiated that students who had direct reef experience at outdoor coral reef sites showed the highest environmental knowledge scores. Previous experience at a coral reef had positive influences on student responses. The combination of a classroom presentation and reef visit had the highest positive effect on environmental knowledge, and the student interviews substantiate this finding. Showing underwater experiences of coral reefs change students' relations of proximity. Once a reef substrate has been monitored, the student subjectively feels a knowing of it. Reefs are physically located offshore and underwater, and far from land, conceived as far away. However, the experience of observing and recording brings a direct contact with the myriad living bodies creating a reef, thus creating a learning situation. Composed by suspension feeding organisms (e.g. corals, gorgonians, sponges, bryozoans, bivalves, etc.), MAFs constitute a vast number of marine ecosystems such as coral reefs, cold water corals, sponge grounds, bivalve beds, etc. The surface covered by these systems is prominent (at the scale of the oceans of the planet), though poorly known. In a previous book (Marine Animal Forests, the ecology of benthic biodiversity hotspots), several aspects of the MAFs were described and discussed, building the basis for a holistic approach with the aim of putting these shallow and deep sea ecosystems under a common umbrella. The main target of the present book is to identify and address important topics which were not covered in the previous three volumes. Bryozoans or Polychaeta, for example, are treated in this volume, as well as hydrothermal vents ecosystems and submarine caves, the chemical ecology in MAFs or the nursery effect on these ecosystems. The vastity of the MAF concept opens new insights in the biology, physiology, biodiversity of the organisms structuring these highly biodiverse ecosystems and on the dangers threatening them (such as microplastics or the role of invasive species as an impact of their trophic ecology or distribution). In a fast changing world, in which the complexity of MAFs is at risk, we propose an in-depth analysis of many aspects that may be inspirational for future research lines in marine biology and ecology.
