Book excerpt: Lewis Carstairs Gunn (1813-1892) and Elizabeth LeBreton Stickney (1811-1906) made their home in Philadelphia after their marriage in 1839, and Lewis left for California in 1849, with his wife and four children joining him two years later. Records of a California family (1928) begins with Lewis Gunn's journal describing his journey from New Orleans to Mexico and then to San Francisco and his life as a miner on the San Joaqun̕, 1849-1850. Mrs. Gunn's letters chronicle her voyage round the Horn with four children in 1851 and their life in Sonora (1851-1861), where her husband published the Sonora Herald and owned a drugstore. She records the affairs of a family (housework, schools, medical care), newspaper publishing, and politics. The Gunns were longtime abolitionists, and Lewis's role in keeping California a free state is detailed. In 1861 the family moved to San Francisco, and the book closes with chapters by Anna Marston summarizing their life there in the 1860s and their later experiences in San Diego.

Taylor of a voyage from New York to California between Feb. 7 and Aug. 17, 1849. Taylor and others from New Brunswick, N.J. sail for San Francisco aboard the "Isabel", outfitted by the New Brunswick and California Trading and Mining Company. The diary describes life aboard the sailing vessel--sea duties, food, leisure time, weather, passing ships, wildlife, and disagreements between the men and the captain. Taylor directs some of his comments to his daughters, Kate and Mary, back home, and also mentions some of his fellow sailors, including John Van Middleworth, Jim Hardenburgh, John C. Dunham, David Abdill, James Foreman, and James V. Spader. The ship sails around Cape Horn and up the Pacific coast, arriving in San Francisco on Aug. 5, 1849, after 178 days at sea, and 18,000 miles without seeing land. The Isabel crew reaches Sacramento on Aug. 14, only three miles from Sutter's Fort, a lot is purchased, and construction is begun of a building which will house Taylor's medical practice and a grocery store. Taylor's last entry is dated Aug. 28, 1849. Included at end is a typed transcript of a letter, dated March 30, 1879 in East Oakland, Calif., from J.R. Hardenburgh to Dr. Taylor in N.J., explaining what happened to each of the original crewmembers of the "Isabel": those who returned East, those who stayed on the West Coast, those who died. Hardenburgh mentions the failure of the Company, principally due to the scurvy which attacked so many of the men on their arrival in California, and resulted in so many deaths. Inexplicably, provisions for preventing scurvy on such a long voyage were stowed in the bottom of the ship and could not be reached.
