Several methods of instilling confidence have been instituted within the clasroom by countless teachers. However, sturctures of cooperative learning have been described as the best way for students to overcome their mathematics anxiety. The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate how cooperative learning activities within the classroom could dissipate mathematics anxiety. A survey was given to 57 students, assessing their levels of mathematics anxiety. From the initial survey, the data have shown that the majority of students agree they have mathematics anxiety. They are most anxious when waiting to hear a score on a mathematics test or when doing problems that involve fractions. Currently, 39 of the 57 students are undergoing new classroom structures that involve various effective methods of cooperative learning. Some students will not take part in these cooperative learning stuctures, because they will be considered the control group. After six weeks of these cooperative learning structures, the students will receive the same survey which will determine their level of mathematics anxiety. It is predicted that the students who undergo cooperative learning structures in the classroom will have less mathematics anxiety than the control group based on the answers from a post survey.

Thus, it is par excellence a model of rational inquiry. Links between Cognitive Psychology and Mathematics Education have been particularly strong during the last decades. Indeed, the Enlightenment view of the rational human mind that reasons, makes decisions and solves problems based on logic and probabilities, was shaken during the second half of the twentieth century. Cognitive psychologists discovered that humans' thoughts and actions often deviate from rules imposed by strict normative theories of inference. Yet, these deviations should not be called "errors": as Cognitive Psychologists have demonstrated, these deviations may be either valid heuristics that succeed in the environments in which humans have evolved, or biases that are caused by a lack of adaptation to abstract information formats. Humans, as the cognitive psychologist and economist Herbert Simon claimed, do not usually optimize, but rather satisfice, even when solving problem. This Research Topic aims at demonstrating that these insights have had a decisive impact on Mathematics Education. We want to stress that we are concerned with the view of bounded rationality that is different from the one espoused by the heuristics-and-biases program. In Simon’s bounded rationality and its direct descendant ecological rationality, rationality is understood in terms of cognitive success in the world (correspondence) rather than in terms of conformity to content-free norms of coherence (e.g., transitivity).

This book contains the observations, research, and experiments of a concerned math teacher who, for over three decades, worked with students experiencing math anxiety. The book contains discussions and views by experts about math anxiety, causes of math anxiety, types of math anxiety, and various teaching strategies. We have included a careful study of some rough spots of math and how to make them easy and understandable to students. The book also contains selected examples of cases and how we tried to help the afflicted person. Through these examples, we have tried to reveal the nature of the problem and practical ways to solve them. To make the text lively and interesting, we have included opinion and reactions of the students, in their own words, to our approach.

Book excerpt: The present book entitled “co-operative learning: a strategy for effective classroom teaching in social science” (An empirical study) has been specially designed to equip the teacher and teacher educators with as much knowledge on all aspects as per recommendations of NPE-1986, NCF-2005and 2011. Education is one of the most important factors in achieving the developmental goals of a country. Social Science is one among those subjects which is an essential element of education. Social Science is a subject which broadens the horizon of an individual and develops various skills and provides opportunity for the professional growth of an individual. Social Science has become a greater value in the present day; Social Science has spread its net on all over the fields of life. Before the days of early printing when books were not easily available, the knowledge was imparted by the teachers from their own store by lecturing and discussion. With the advancement of educational technology and educational research the educationists evolved many teaching skills and techniques, which resulted in effective teaching. The teachers are required to teach in such a way xii that the students should learn better, understand well and also feel interested while learning. The scope of the book has been made broad-based and comprehensive and the approach is practical and functional. Practical approach followed in dealing with topics such as model approach with reference to Cooperative learning model, currents trends in social science teaching-learning process like collaborative learning approach, methodology, analysis and interpretation of data and at the end findings of research along with educational implications of present study are discussed. The author, therefore hope that this book which is very informative for teachers working at secondary schools and teacher-educators. We hope that this book would meet the needs of both the students, teachers and teacher educators and especially would be researchers in the field of education. We look forward to and appreciate suggestions from the intelligentsia to improve the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research has identified cooperative learning as one of the ten High Impact Practices that improve student learning. If you’ve been interested in cooperative learning, but wondered how it would work in your discipline, this book provides the necessary theory, and a wide range of concrete examples.Experienced users of cooperative learning demonstrate how they use it in settings as varied as a developmental mathematics course at a community college, and graduate courses in history and the sciences, and how it works in small and large classes, as well as in hybrid and online environments. The authors describe the application of cooperative learning in biology, economics, educational psychology, financial accounting, general chemistry, and literature at remedial, introductory, and graduate levels. The chapters showcase cooperative learning in action, at the same time introducing the reader to major principles such as individual accountability, positive interdependence, heterogeneous teams, group processing, and social or leadership skills. The authors build upon, and cross-reference, each others’ chapters, describing particular methods and activities in detail. They explain how and why they may differ about specific practices while exemplifying reflective approaches to teaching that never fail to address important assessment issues.

As a field, it was originated from social psychology dating back to Norman Triplett's observations in 1898 of cyclists' enhanced performances when they cycled together rather than alone. The application of cooperative learning in the classroom has been the focus of research since early 1970s. In this study, quasi-experimental research design in which pretest-posttest non-equivalent groups design was employed to examine the effects of STAD cooperative learning against traditional lecture on social and mathematics achievement of primary school students. Most people consider cooperative learning as group learning. In practice, cooperative learning is not just group-learning rather it is more than group learning. It is also a cornerstone of inclusive education because inclusion is not something teachers do for a few students rather it is something teachers can do for every student in their class by applying the principles of cooperative learning.

Book excerpt: Feelings of apprehension and fear brought on by mathematical performance can affect correct mathematical application and can influence the achievement and future paths of individuals affected by it. In recent years, mathematics anxiety has become a subject of increasing interest both in educational and clinical settings. This ground-breaking collection presents theoretical, educational and psychophysiological perspectives on the widespread phenomenon of mathematics anxiety. Featuring contributions from leading international researchers, Mathematics Anxiety challenges preconceptions and clarifies several crucial areas of research, such as the distinction between mathematics anxiety from other forms of anxiety (i.e., general or test anxiety); the ways in which mathematics anxiety has been assessed (e.g. throughout self-report questionnaires or psychophysiological measures); the need to clarify the direction of the relationship between math anxiety and mathematics achievement (which causes which). Offering a revaluation of the negative connotations usually associated with mathematics anxiety and prompting avenues for future research, this book will be invaluable to academics and students in the field psychological and educational sciences, as well as teachers working with students who are struggling with mathematics anxiety
