Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cooperative Calibration and Analysis of Cement Clinker Phases A proposed test method to determine the proportion of certain phases in portland cement or clinker using quantitative X - ray diffraction (qxrd) is currently under development by astm Task Group C01.23.01, chaired by Leslie Struble. The approach is similar to the approach used in developing performance requirements for rapid analytical methods for astm C 114, Standard Methods for Chemical Analysis of Hydraulic Cement. The approach specifies certain general aspects of the analytical procedure, but leaves optional most of the specific details of the analysis. However, the approach specifies the levels of precision and bias that must be met for the particular selected analytical method to qualify. Detailed methods will be described that have been shown to meet these levels, including the methods used in the round-robin analyses to determine the specified precision and accuracy levels. Book excerpt: An interlaboratory calibration and analysis has been carried out by ASTM Task Group C01.23.01 to assess the use of quantitative X-ray diffraction analysis to determine the proportion of phases in portland cement clinker. This interlaboratory test provides an estimate of precision and bias in the quantitative phase analysis of some clinker phases in mixtures prepared using calibrating phases. These estimates of precision and bias will be incorporated in a proposed standard test method on quantitative phase analysis of cement and clinker currently being developed by the task group.

Book excerpt: Established by Congress in 1901, the National Bureau of Standards (NBS), now the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), has a long and distinguished history as the custodian and disseminator of the United States' standards of physical measurement. Having reached its centennial anniversary, the NBS/NIST reflects on and celebrates its first century with this book describing some of its seminal contributions to science and technology. Within these pages are 102 vignettes that describe some of the Institute's classic publications. Each vignette relates the context in which the publication appeared, its impact on science, technology, and the general public, and brief details about the lives and work of the authors. The groundbreaking works depicted include: A breakthrough paper on laser-cooling of atoms below the Doppler limit, which led to the award of the 1997 Nobel Prize for Physics to William D. Phillips The official report on the development of the radio proximity fuse, one of the most important new weapons of World War II The 1932 paper reporting the discovery of deuterium in experiments that led to Harold Urey's1934 Nobel Prize for Chemistry A review of the development of the SEAC, the first digital computer to employ stored programs and the first to process images in digital form The first paper demonstrating that parity is not conserved in nuclear physics, a result that shattered a fundamental concept of theoretical physics and led to a Nobel Prize for T. D. Lee and C. Y. Yang "Observation of Bose-Einstein Condensation in a Dilute Atomic Vapor," a 1995 paper that has already opened vast new areas of research A landmark contribution to the field of protein crystallography by Wlodawer and coworkers on the use of joint x-ray and neutron diffraction to determine the structure of proteins

Book excerpt: Based on the author's lectures to graduate students of geosciences, physics, chemistry and materials science, this didactic handbook covers basic aspects of ceramics such as composition and structure as well as such advanced topics as achieving specific functionalities by choosing the right materials. The focus lies on the thermal transformation processes of natural raw materials to arrive at traditional structural ceramics and on the general physical principles of advanced functional ceramics. The book thus provides practice-oriented information to readers in research, development and engineering on how to understand, make and improve ceramics and derived products, while also serving as a rapid reference for the practitioner. The choice of topics and style of presentation make it equally useful for chemists, materials scientists, engineers and mineralogists.

Book excerpt: For courses in Civil Engineering Materials, Construction Materials, and Construction Methods and Materials offered in Civil, Environmental, or Construction engineering departments. This introduction gives students a basic understanding of the material selection process and the behavior of materials — a fundamental requirement for all civil and construction engineers performing design, construction, and maintenance. The authors cover the various materials used by civil and construction engineers in one useful reference, limiting the vast amount of information available to the introductory level, concentrating on current practices, and extracting information that is relevant to the general education of civil and construction engineers. A large number of experiments, figures, sample problems, test methods, and homework problems gives students opportunity for practice and review.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lea's Chemistry of Cement and Concrete deals with the chemical and physical properties of cements and concretes and their relation to the practical problems that arise in manufacture and use. As such it is addressed not only to the chemist and those concerned with the science and technology of silicate materials, but also to those interested in the use of concrete in building and civil engineering construction. Much attention is given to the suitability of materials, to the conditions under which concrete can excel and those where it may deteriorate and to the precautionary or remedial measures that can be adopted. First published in 1935, this is the fourth edition and the first to appear since the death of Sir Frederick Lea, the original author. Over the life of the first three editions, this book has become the authority on its subject. The fourth edition is edited by Professor Peter C. Hewlett, Director of the British Board of Agrement and visiting Industrial Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Dundee. Professor Hewlett has brought together a distinguished body of international contributors to produce an edition which is a worthy successor to the previous editions.

Thus, it refers to the mathematical method and art of identifying and quantifying matter. The study of analytical chemistry serves as a difficult area that advances several scientific disciplines. It offers a strategy for addressing chemical issues, not only a set of analytical tools and a grasp of equilibrium chemicals. Analytical chemistry represents a subfield of chemistry concerned with the study of chemical analysis. Qualitative analysis refers to the process of identifying the components of the mixture and substance, whereas quantitative analysis focuses on the concentration of those components. The assay technique is another name for this. Quantitative analysis encompasses many different techniques, including volumetric evaluation, gravimetric evaluation, electrochemical techniques, and chromatographic techniques, along with biological approaches. This book comprises of topics like sampling, Pre-treatment of samples, Basic tools of Analytical chemistry, Errors, Central tendency measurements, Measurement of uncertainty, Concentration, Introduction of Basic Equipment for measuring the mass and volume, Chromatography, Theory of critical state of matter and supercritical state etc.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in an understanding of the beautiful landscape and dynamic geology of the Bay Area."—Mel Erskine, geological consultant "This accessible summary of San Francisco Bay Area geology is particularly timely. We are living in an age where we must deal with our impact on our environment and the impact of the environment on us. Earthquake hazards, and to a lesser extent landslide hazards, are well known, but the public also needs to be aware of other important engineering and environmental impacts and geologic resources. This book will allow Bay Area residents to make more intelligent decisions about the geological issues affecting their lives."—John Wakabayashi, geological consultant

The book is divided into four sections: Characterisation of Historic Mortars, Repair Mortars and Design Issues, Experimental Research into Properties of Repair Mortars, and Assessment and Testing. The papers present the latest work of researchers in their field. The individual contributions were selected from the contributions to the 2nd Historic Mortars Conference, which took place in Prague, September, 22-24, 2010. All papers were reviewed and improved as necessary before publication. This peer review process by the editors resulted in the 34 individual contributions included in here. One extra paper reviewing and summarising State-of-the-Art knowledge covered by this publication was added as a starting and navigational point for the reader. The editors believe that having these papers in print is important and they hope that it will stimulate further research into historic mortars and related subjects.
