Book excerpt: The development of next generation combustion engines with improved thermal efficiencies is critical in achieving international greenhouse gas emissions objectives. In many potential advanced combustion engines, including detonation-based engines, low temperature chemistry (LTC) plays a critical role in the initial chemical kinetics driving proper combustion timing or may function as a kind of parasitic combustion diminishing engine performance. Although high temperature combustion chemistry has been extensively studied, LTC and its effects on detonations are comparatively less known. This dissertation first investigates LTC in laminar, freely propagating n-decane/O2/O3 cool flames by experimentally characterizing the propagation speeds, flame temperatures, and products over a range of equivalence ratios. A comparison is made to one-dimensional cool flame simulations and potential causes for discrepancies between experimental findings and numerical results are explored. The second aim of this dissertation is to investigate the effects of thermal pretreatment of reactants by LTC on subsequent detonation of those reactants. Ozoneless and O3-enhanced DME/O2 reactants undergo LTC induced by reactant heating, and subsequent detonations are experimentally investigated by measuring detonation wave velocity, mean cell size, and general detonability with differing thermal pretreatment times over a range of O3 enhancement levels and equivalence ratios. Numerical simulations are employed, results are compared to experimental results, and improvements of existing empirical detonation correlations are presented and discussed. Finally, the significance of this work for next generation propulsion engines is discussed.

In recent years, researchers have focused on low temperature combustion technologies which have demonstrated potential to satisfy environmental regulations that the automotive sector is required to meet. Low temperature chemistry (LTC) engine technologies include strategies such as homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI), reactivity-controlled compression ignition (RCCI), partially premixed compression ignition (PPCI), and spark-assisted compression ignition (SACI), and have received great attention. However, LTC fuel oxidation is still not well-understood despite its importance in combustion phenomena such as engine knock. This dissertation advances the understanding of LTC, and the cool flames formed from LTC, through experiments and simulations of combustion phenomena that incorporate both complex LTC kinetics and transport interactions. Fundamental cool flame properties such as propagation speed and LTC-derived CH2O structure in premixed and nonpremixed flames are measured experimentally to provide novel insights into cool flame characteristics and simulation targets for model development. Insights from experiments and modeling are applied to the simulation of cool flames formed from droplet combustion in microgravity, such as those discovered aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The outcomes of this dissertation provide new insights into LTC and cool flames in engine-relevant applications, and the data and analyses developed in this work can aid in the future development and refinement of LTC kinetics models.

In this book a theory based on the second law of thermodynamics and its applications are described. In thermodynamics there is a concept of an ideal gas which satisfies a mathematical formula PV = RT. This formula can appro- mately be applied to the real gas, so far as the gas has not an especially high pressure and low temperature. In connection with the second law of thermo- namics there is also a concept of reversible and irreversible processes. The reversible process is a phenomenon proceeding at an infinitely low velocity, while the irreversible process is that proceeding with a finite velocity. Such a process with an infinitely slow velocity can really never take place, and all processes observed are always irreversible, therefore, the reversible process is an ideal process, while the irreversible process is a real process. According to the first law of thermodynamics the energy increase dU of the thermodynamic system is a sum of the heat dQ added to the system and work dW done in the system. Practically, however, the mathematical formula of the law is often expressed by the equation , or some similar equations derived from this formula, is applied to many phenomena. Such formulae are, however, th- retically only applicable to phenomena proceeding at an infinitely low velocity, that is, reversible processes or ideal processes.

Book excerpt: The High-Temperature Combustion Facility at BNL was used to conduct deflagration-to-detonation transition (DDT) experiments. Periodic orifice plates were installed inside the entire length of the detonation tube in order to promote flame acceleration. The orifice plates are 27.3-cm-outer diameter, which is equivalent to the inner diameter of the tube, and 20.6-cm-inner diameter. The detonation tube length is 21.3-meters long, and the spacing of the orifice plates is one tube diameter. A standard automobile diesel engine glow plug was used to ignite the test mixture at one end of the tube. Hydrogen-air-steam mixtures were tested at a range of temperatures up to 650K and at an initial pressure of 0.1 MPa. In most cases, the limiting hydrogen mole fraction which resulted in DDT corresponded to the mixture whose detonation cell size, [lambda], was equal to the inner diameter of the orifice plate, d (e.g., d/[lambda]=1). The only exception was in the dry hydrogen-air mixtures at 650K where the DDT limit was observed to be 11 percent hydrogen, corresponding to a value of d/[lambda] equal to 5.5. For a 10.5 percent hydrogen mixture at 650K, the flame accelerated to a maximum velocity of about 120 mIs and then decelerated to below 2 mIs. By maintaining the first 6.1 meters of the vessel at the ignition end at 400K, and the rest of the vessel at 650K, the DDT limit was reduced to 9.5 percent hydrogen (d/[lambda]=4.2). This observation indicates that the d/[lambda]=1 DDT limit criteria provides a necessary condition but not a sufficient one for the onset of DDT in obstacle laden ducts. In this particular case, the mixture initial condition (i.e., temperature) resulted in the inability of the mixture to sustain flame acceleration to the point where DDT could occur. It was also observed that the distance required for the flame to accelerate to the point of detonation initiation, referred to as the run-up distance, was found to be a function of both the hydrogen mole fraction and the mixture initial temperature. Decreasing the hydrogen mole fraction or increasing the initial mixture temperature resulted in longer run-up distances. The density ratio across the flame and the speed of sound in the unburned mixture were found to be two parameters which influence the run-up distance.
