Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prince Bismarck: A Biographical SketchSuch was Bismarck's first appearance in the Assembly. The effect of his speech was important. The indignant liberals argued that he could not have any Opinion, because he had not, like some of his opponents, witnessed the movement of 1813. Certainly, rejoined he, I cannot affirm that I was living at that time, and I deeply regret that it was not given to me to take part in that movement. My regret is, however, diminished by the explanation which I have just received of its nature. I always believed that the bondage which produced the struggle came from without, but I have just been informed that it lay in the country itself, and for this explanation I am not at all grateful. The man who in his own way has completed the work of 1813, the regeneration of Germany, does not even in the recollections of his childhood reach back to the time of French rule. He was born on the Ist of April, 1815, at Schonhausen.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bismarck, the Man and the Statesman, Vol. 1: Being the Reflections and Reminiscences of Otto, Prince Von Bismarck Written and Dictated by Himself After His Retirement From Office It has been the Editor's duty, in pursuance of injune tions emanating from Prince Bismarck himself, to correct by the originals the various documents, which were often taken from defective printed versions; to correct trifling errors in dates, or in the spelling of names, due to want of official material; and to draw attention in foot-notes to similar expressions used by the Prince in his political speeches, as well as to give literary references. Nowhere, however, has the text been altered or abridged - where the dead is of such sort, piety bids us refrain. Annotations from the Prince's hand are indicated by asterisks, etc. Ar), those of the Editor by numerals. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Reminiscences of Prince Bismarck My German experiences extended through many years and increased my predilection, not so much perhaps for the individual as for the simple social life, and above all, the comparatively high standard of humanising culture and conduct, what the Germans themselves call Sitte und Bildung, to be found even under a rough exterior, more or less wherever the German tongue is spoken. The poet was pointed out to me who had declined the pension of a king; I met the historian who had refused to collaborate with an emperor; as also the soldier who had led a million armed men to victory, and who had yet remained a simple-hearted man, content in old age to claim, like Goethe's Faust, the status of a peasant. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bismarck, the Man and the Statesman, Vol. 2 of 3: Being the Reflections and Reminiscences of Otto Prince Von Bismarck, Written and Dictated by Himself After His Retirement From Office After I had developed my views, Schleinitz was called upon to bring his forward. He did this by a reference to the will of Frederick William III. Thus skilfully touch ing a Chord which never failed to find a response in the mind of the Regent. He described the anxieties and dangers which threatened us from the West, from Paris, and at home, if our relations with Austria, in spite of all justifiable grounds for sensitiveness, failed to be maintained. The dangers of a combination between Russia and France, which even at that time was Openly discussed, were set forth, and the possibility of an alliance between Prussia and Russia was said to be condemned by public Opinion. It was characteristic of the Regent that, as soon as Schleinitz had spoken the last word of a fluent and evi dently carefully-prepared speech, he at once declared in a lucid statement that in accordance with the traditions of his ancestors he decided in favour of the minister von Schleinitz. This brought the discussion to a speedy conclusion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Prince Otto Von Bismarck Bismarck's memoirs, although his advanced age is some times perceptible in them, contain a mine of wisdom for the practical statesman; and yet they are not in the true sense an autobiography, for they are not a record of the man's own life. Likewise there are valuable incidents 'in Dr. Bus\ch's voluminous sketches of the German chancellor; but Dr. Busch's acquaintance with his employer mggan j_r3__1 810, and he makes no attempt to explain Bismarck's policy or how he accomplished his mighty work. Mr. Lowe's larger English life of Bismarck is a dignified study of the subject, but it was published many years before his death, and is written too much from the English Tory and monarchical stand-point to please American readers. Von Sybel's his tory of the foundation of the new German empire contains the only adequate statement of Bismarck's statecraft between 1862 and 1870; but the period comprising the last twenty five years of his life was hardly less important than that which immediately preceded it. What Americans now require is a clear statement of the characte'r of the man, the principal events of his life, and an explanation of his policy as related to the historical events of his time. This is what I have undertaken to give in the present volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bismarck, the Man the Statesman, Vol. 2: Being the Reflections and Reminiscences of Otto, Prince Von Bismarck MY successor at Paris was Count Robert von der Goltz, who had been since 185 5 ambassador at Athens, Constan tinople, and St. Petersburg. My expectation that office would have disciplined him, that the transition from liter ary to business activity would have made him more sober and practical, and that the summons to what was then the most important post in Prussian diplomacy would have gratified his ambition, was not to be immediately or fully realised. At the end of the year 1863 I found myself obliged to have a written explanation with him, the whole of which is unfortunately no longer in my posses sion of his letter of December 22, which was the imme diate occasion of the correspondence, only a fragment remains, and in the copy of my reply the beginning is missing. But even so this document has its value as a sketch of the situation at the time, and as illustrating the development that proceeded from it.
