Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2002 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2,3 (B), University of Bayreuth (English Linguistics), course: Speech acts and conversational principles, language: English, abstract: Every conversation is different from all others. Nobody ever had exactly the same private conversation again, even if he conversed about the same topic. Nevertheless there are certain items in conversations that are very alike or completely alike, and which seem to be build on certain schemes. Places in conversations where these schemes occur are openings and closings. The aim of this paper is to examine the mechanisms behind this phenomenon and to examine if and how these mechanisms have changed since they were first examined by Schegloff and other linguists in the 1970’s. For providing the necessary background information, I will first give some basic features of conversation analysis which are important for the topic, before moving on to conversation openings and finally to conversation closings. In openings I will especially focus on the summons-answer structure, identification and recognition as well as on the changes that had to be made and were made to the structure since the establishment of number identification. Closings will be examined by their components and the different possibilities they provide will be analysed. As stated by Levinson (1983: 309) telephone conversation is one of “social activities effectively constituted by talk itself“. This is, that the conversation is not disturbed in its pureness by extra-linguistic features like “physical doings and positionings” (Schegloff 1973: 323). Participating hearers have to interpret the utterances with nothing more than voice, words, intonation and pauses which can be analysed linguistically. Also the beginnings and endings – and because of that also the opening and closing places - of such conversation can clearly be determined, as telephone conversation usually has a duration of the time of the call. Therefore telephone conversation is most suitable for linguistic research and I will focus on such conversation only (Schegloff 1973: 325).

Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2003 in the subject American Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2,7 (B-), University of Bayreuth (Language and Literature Sciences), language: English, abstract: Although we converse almost every day, we never have exactly the same conversation twice. Nevertheless, certain parts of conversations occur in forms which are very alike. They seem to be constructed according to sets of rules. These rules were examined in the 1970’s for the first time. The mechanisms which govern our conversations are especially observable in telephone conversations. But since the 1970’s, new technologies have come up and society changed. The aim of this paper is to examine the mechanisms of telephone conversation and how the systems working in telephone conversations have changed since the establishment of the mobile telephone. For this, the focus on Conversation Analysis as research methodology is explained, before coming to the basic features of every conversation. Following this, telephone conversations are examined according to their structure of opening, topic-talk and closing. Finally, the changes of this structure for mobile telephone conversations are pointed out. The basis for the observations on mobile telephone conversation is a survey carried out among 20 Canadian citizens and material provided by the participants of the survey. Two different main methodologies exist for analysing and examining conversation – conversation in general, or telephone conversation in special – from a linguistic perspective: Conversation Analysis and Discourse Analysis. To understand my decision to focus on the discipline of Conversation Analysis, I will shortly point out the main differences and parallels of these methodologies. Of course, both disciplines examine conversation. But the methods used for this, the thereby resulting findings and the main understanding of conversation differ immensely. A common aim of Conversation Analysis and Discourse Analysis is to be able to give “an account of how coherence and sequential organization is produced and understood” (Levinson 1983: 286). Discourse Analysis uses primitive and basic concepts of linguistics for this. It attempts to extend the rules applying to sentences over the boundaries of sentences. The main method of the discipline is the isolation of sets of units of discourse, followed by a formulation of rules according to these units and finally the division of units into well-formed and ill-formed sequences. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ten volumes of "Handbook of Pragmatics Highlights" focus on the most salient topics in the field of pragmatics, thus dividing its wide interdisciplinary spectrum in a transparent and manageable way. While the other volumes select specific philosophical, cognitive, grammatical, social, cultural, variational, or discursive angles, this fourth volume is dedicated to the empirical investigation of the way human beings organize their interaction in natural environments and how they use talk for accomplishing actions and their contexts. Starting from Goffman s observation that interaction exhibits a structure in its own right that cannot be reduced to the psychological properties of the individual nor to society, it contains a selection of articles documenting the various levels of interactional organization. In addition to treatments of basic concepts such as sequence, participation, prosody and style and some topical articles on phenomena like reported speech and listener response, it also includes overviews of specific traditions (conversation analysis, ethnomethodology) and articles on eminent authors (Goffman, Sacks) who had a formative influence on the field."

Through good manners, people demonstrate their educational background and social rank. This is the first book to bring together the most recent scholarship on politeness and impoliteness in Ancient Greek and Latin, signalling both its universal and its culture-specific traits. Leading scholars analyse texts by canonical classical authors (including Plato, Cicero, Euripides, and Plautus), as well as non-literary sources, to provide glimpses into the courtesy and rudeness of Greek and Latin speakers. A wide range of interdisciplinary approaches is adopted, namely pragmatics, conversation analysis, and computational linguistics. With its extensive introduction, the volume introduces readers to one of the most dynamic fields of Linguistics, while demonstrating that it can serve as an innovative tool in philological readings of classical texts.
