Book excerpt: In the first part of this book the various basic heat transfer processes are considered, -- simple convective heat transfer from hot gases to the engine walls under various conditions, radiation heat transfer, and coolant heat transfer processes. This part is followed by one describing the various methods of cooling used in liquid propellant rocket engines, such as regenerative, film, ablation and radiation cooling. The final part concerns the properties of materials that will have to be known by the engine designer, from the transport properties of the hot combustion gases to those of the materials from which the engine will be constructed. Emphasis was placed on presenting simple methods for calculating the magnitude of heat transfer rather than providing the most modern and rigorous theories, particularly in the field of developing boundary layers. Book excerpt: A boundary layer method previously developed for predicting the heat transfer to rocket nozzles is extended to the prediction of heat transfer rates inside the rocket combustion chamber. The important factor is shown to be the available enthalpy of the partly burned gases in the free stream. A mixing theory is presented which enables the rate of increase of available enthalpy to be calculated. The theory has been applied to some 524 experimental measurements, made over a range of propellent combinations and injector designs, and an overall rms deviation of approximately 15% is obtained. The effects of injector patterns on circumferential heat transfer rates and of combustion instability are also considered. (Author).

Book excerpt: The effects of chemical non-equilibrium in the boundary layer, of temperature variation and compressibility assumptions, and of systematic errors in the estimated transport properties upon the heat transfer in rocket engines have been investigated. Hydrogen recombination and hydrogen/hydroxyl recombination appear to be the important reactions in determining the degree of chemical equilibrium occurring within the boundary layer. The important effect of chemical reaction upon the heat transfer is to increase the available enthalpy drop across the boundary layer. There appear to be systematic errors in the current methods of calculating the transport properties of combustion gas mixtures containing hydrogen as a component. (Author).

Book excerpt: An analytical technique suitable for & the solution of complex energy transfer problems involving coupled radiant and convective energy transfer is developed. Solutions for the coupled axial wall energy flax distribution in rocket nozzles using hydrogen as a propellant are presented. Flow rates and temperatures studied are near those forecast for gaseous-core nuclear-propulsion systems. Parameters varied are nozzle shape, inlet propellant temperature, mean reactor cavity temperature, and nozzle wall temperature level. The effects of variation of the propellant radiation absorption coefficient with pressure, temperature, and wavelength are presented, and real property variations are used where they appear to be significant. Comparison is made to a simplified, coupled solution using a modified second-order one-dimensional diffusion equation for the radiative transfer. At the temperature levels assumed, radiative transfer may account for a greater portion of the total energy transfer over important portions of the nozzle, and its effects cannot, therefore, be neglected. Extreme energy flaxes (near 3XlO to the 8 Btu/(hr)(sq ft)) are observed for certain cases, and this implies that new nozzle cooling techniques must be developed.

Book excerpt: This book concentrates on modeling and numerical simulations of combustion in liquid rocket engines, covering liquid propellant atomization, evaporation of liquid droplets, turbulent flows, turbulent combustion, heat transfer, and combustion instability. It presents some state of the art models and numerical methodologies in this area. The book can be categorized into two parts. Part 1 describes the modeling for each subtopic of the combustion process in the liquid rocket engines. Part 2 presents detailed numerical methodology and several representative applications in simulations of rocket engine combustion.

This book was released on 2002-12-01 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A numerical study was conducted to predict the combined convective and radiative heat transfer rates on the walls of a small aspect ratio cylinder representative of the scaled model of a rocket engine combustion chamber. A high-temperature, high-pressure environment was simulated in the cylinder, with gas velocities at low subsonic levels typical of the conditions leading to the entrance of the nozzle section of a rocket engine. The composition of the gases in the cylinder was determined from the TEP program for the burning of rocket fuel at typical values of the O/F ratio. The thrust of the study was to determine the radiative contribution to the heat transfer rate from the hot participating chamber gases to the cooler wall. The calculations were carried out using the commercial CFD package CFDACE, and were first benchmarked against known results in the literature for the simpler case of gray chamber walls and a gray participating medium. The non-gray computations were subsequently carried out using gas absorption coefficient values obtained from the exponential wide band model with the help of the fire-modeling program, RADCAL. The effect of different chamber wall temperatures and gas compositions were examined. The main findings of the study are that the radiative contributions at the high gas temperatures being considered are comparable to the convective values, and strongly spectral in nature. In addition these radiative fluxes were found to be least sensitive to the wall temperature and chamber pressure in the range considered. Furthermore, this radiative contribution reaches a maximum at a unique optimal optical thickness of the gas that lies within the extremes of the optically thin and thick limiting cases.
