Book Synopsis Are Photographs Truthful? Whence Veracity? by : Michael Shapter
Download or read book Are Photographs Truthful? Whence Veracity? written by Michael Shapter and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-10-09 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades, people have made certain assumptions about photographs, the primary one being that they are truthful in depicting reality. While this is true in many cases, it is not always so. This book traces the rise of photography’s perceived veracity. It shows why a combination of pre-knowledge of early developments in imagery, a persistent marketing campaign espousing the accuracy of photographs and a perception by users that what they got from their photographs was an accurate depiction acted to create the belief in the photograph’s veracity. The book uses philosophy, physiology, psychology and photography to tell this story and concludes by describing a system of identification that could be used to separate images that are not always what they seem. The turbulence caused to photography with the introduction of digital imaging is described and is the impetus for the beginning of the discussion about where photography sits today amongst other images.

Book Synopsis The Rigoberta Menchú Controversy by : Arturo Arias
Download or read book The Rigoberta Menchú Controversy written by Arturo Arias and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guatemalan indigenous rights activist Rigoberta Menchu first came to international prominence following the 1983 publication of her memoir, I, Rigoberta Menchu, which chronicled in compelling detail the violence and misery that she and her people suffered during her country's brutal civil war. The book focused world attention on Guatemala and led to her being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1992. In 1999, a book by David Stoll challenged the veracity of key details in Menchu's account, generating a storm of controversy. Journalists and scholars squared off regarding whether Menchu had lied about her past and, if so, what that would mean about the larger truths revealed in her book. In The Rigoberta Menchu Controversy, Arturo Arias has assembled a casebook that offers a balanced perspective on the debate. The first section of this volume collects the primary documents -- newspaper articles, interviews, and official statements -- in which the debate raged, many translated into English for the first time. In the second section, a distinguished group of international scholars assesses the political, historical, and cultural contexts of the debate, and considers its implications for such issues as the "culture wars", historical truth, and the politics of memory. Also included is a new essay by David Stoll in which he responds to his critics.
Book Synopsis Controversy in Marketing Theory: For Reason, Realism, Truth and Objectivity by : Shelby D. Hunt
Download or read book Controversy in Marketing Theory: For Reason, Realism, Truth and Objectivity written by Shelby D. Hunt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book distinguished theorist and author Shelby D. Hunt analyzes the major controversies in the "philosophy debates" raging throughout the field of marketing. Using an historical approach, Hunt argues against relativism and for scientific realism as a philosophy for guiding marketing research and theory. He also shows how the pursuit of truth and objectivity in marketing research are both possible and desirable. Specific controversies analyzed in the book include: Does positivism dominate marketing research? Does positivism imply quantitive methods? Is relativism an appropriate foundation for marketing research? Does relativism imply pluralism, tolerance, and openness? Should marketing pursue the goal of objective research? An ideal companion to Hunt's classic text, Foundations of Marketing Theory, this volume will be equally useful on its own in any graduate level course on marketing theory.
Book Synopsis Jesus in an Age of Controversy by : Doug Groothuis

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who is this man Jesus? An ordinary man about whom the early Christians made up extraordinary stories? A spiritual guru or master who tapped into a cosmic consciousness that we can all aspire to? Or is he the unique Son of God? Best-selling books challenge us to rethink our ideas about Jesus. The Jesus Seminar makes headlines with its systematic attempts to undermine the accuracy of the Gospel accounts. New Age teachings about Jesus have found their way into many pulpits. In response to this confusion, Jesus in an Age of Controversy provides a straightforward, easy to understand study of the questionable foundations and faulty conclusions of these new views. This important book provides the historical and logical evidence that confirms biblical teachings about Jesus. It will enable you to defend your faith against attack, help those struggling with questions and doubts, and encourage you with the overwhelming weight of evidence that confirms that Jesus is the only Savior and Lord.
