Book excerpt: Synthesis of supported nanoparticles with consistent particle size is a bridge between what researchers refer to as the "materials gap," the gap in structure complexity between single crystals and supported catalysts. Controlling particle size during supported catalyst synthesis allows researchers to investigate optimal conditions for desired activity and/or selectivity toward specific chemical reactions. This information can lead to the possibility to tune catalyst synthesis to optimize efficiency and cost while minimizing the waste of precious, nonrenewable resources. This thesis investigates a procedure potentially capable of synthesizing supported catalysts with uniformly-sized nanoparticles. This combines the idealized environment of a model system with the increased complexity associated with nanoparticle size and support effects. To bridge the materials gap, extensive work has been performed to determine how metallic structures affect adsorbate interactions. Chapter 1 discusses density functional theory (DFT) calculations used to predict adsorbate binding energies on metal monolayer bimetallic surfaces and the correlation to single crystal surfaces and polycrystalline foils. Recently, the trends observed on these model systems have provided insight into enhanced reactivity on oxide-supported bimetallic catalysts. Due to limitations of particle size control with traditional catalyst synthesis procedures, there is motivation for a method to synthesize uniform particles to better represent model surfaces. Chapter 2 describes reverse micelle synthesis, a technique which has been shown to control nanoparticle size by chemically reducing metal precursors in surfactant-stabilized water droplets suspended in an oil phase. Techniques used to characterize catalysts synthesized using this method are also discussed in this chapter. Chapter 3 discusses synthesis of supported monometallic platinum (Pt) and bimetallic platinum-cobalt (Pt-Co) catalysts in aqueous/oil/surfactant microemulsions consisting of water/cyclohexane/Brij-30 reduced by sodium borohydride (NaBH4). Although reverse micelle synthesis produced small (~4 nm) reduced, unsupported nanoparticles, supported particles sintered after hightemperature pre-treatments. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements confirmed bimetallic bond formations between Pt and Co atoms; however, bimetallic catalysts did not exhibit enhanced hydrogenation activity compared to their monometallic Pt catalysts. A half-fractional factorial design of experiments was implemented to determine what synthesis parameters could be altered to decrease solvent quantities, thus decreasing residual carbon which may have inhibited catalytic activity. Statistical analysis could not be performed due to large scatter between repetitions. Due to unsatisfactory reproducibility involved with this synthesis, an alternative reverse micelle synthesis chemistry was investigated. The reverse micelle synthesis chemistry described in Chapter 4 incorporated a co-surfactant, which stabilizes surfactant molecules around water droplets and promotes uniformity. The composition was an aqueous/oil/surfactant/cosurfactant microemulsion consisting of water/cyclohexane/Triton X-100/2-propanol. The reducing agent was hydrazine (N2H4). Two impregnation methods, stepimpregnation and co-impregnation, were tested. Step-impregnation describes the procedure where nickel (Ni) nanoparticles were reduced in microemulsion and supported, followed by depositing Pt using incipient wetness impregnation. Co-impregnation is the procedure where Ni and Pt were reduced simultaneously in microemulsion and then supported. These methods were compared to catalysts synthesized by incipient wetness impregnation, either step-impregnation (supporting Ni then supporting Pt) or co-impregnation (supporting Pt and Ni simultaneously). Final particle sizes of all catalysts were similar; however, micelle catalysts resulted in a narrower distribution of particle size than those synthesized using only incipient wetness impregnation. Step-impregnated catalysts exhibited enhanced activity compared to monometallic Pt and Ni catalysts, suggesting bimetallic bond formation, which was later confirmed by EXAFS measurements. The co-impregnated micelle catalyst had low activity, comparable to data obtained for monometallic Ni. Bimetallic bond formation could not be measured for the co-impregnated micelle catalyst due to insufficient X-ray absorption during EXAFS measurements. Atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) revealed that Pt metal uptake for the co-impregnated micelle catalyst was only 25% of Pt uptake for the incipient wetness catalysts and the stepimpregnated micelle catalyst. The low Pt uptake was predicted to be the reason for the low activity and low X-ray absorption. Chapter 5 discusses challenges associated with reverse micelle synthesis including particle size control, effect of solution pH on metal reduction and adsorption on support, and the effect of pre-treatment conditions on nanoparticle size. To take advantage of the ability to create an idealized environment by controlling particle size to study adsorbate interactions, these challenges must be overcome.

Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is considered one of the promising technologies due to their high energy efficiency, and environmental friendliness. Platinum has been widely used as electrocatalyst in PEMFCs because of its ability to absorb and dissociate important chemical species, such as hydrogen and oxygen. The high cost of platinum used in the electrocatalysts however hinders the real world applications of PEMFCs. It is critical that consumption of platinum be reduced without sacrificing catalytic performance. Highly active and durable electrocatalysts with low Pt content need to be developed in order to advance the fuel cell technology. Studies have demonstrated that both d-band electron and surface geometric structure can greatly affect the activity of catalysts and be optimized by tailoring their composition and surface. In this thesis I present the synthesis, characterization and electrochemical property of facet-controlled platinum bimetallic alloy nanoparticles. A series of Pt-M (M= Co, Cu, Fe, Ni and Pd) bimetallic alloys with various shapes bounded with {111} or {100} facets have been prepared and their electrocatalytic properties have been tested. The surface-defined Pt3Ni nanocrystals have exhibited enhanced activity in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which is proportional to the surface ratio of {111} over {100} facets, when the shape of Pt3Ni nanocrystals changes gradually from cube to truncated octahedron, and to octahedron. Beyond the shape-controlled synthetic approach assisted by commonly used capping agents and reducing agents to produce bimetallic alloy nanocrystals with different compositions. CO, a gaseous reducing agent, was introduced to control the morphology of platinum alloys. Electrochemical stripping and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to show the strong facet-sensitive adsorption and oxidation play the key roles for the shape-controlled synthesis. This facet-preferential adsorption and oxidation property was also applied to address the issue on CO poisoning in methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). The size-dependent ORR catalytic properties of {111} surface-dominated octahedral Pt3Ni nanocrystals were examined in order to narrow the gap in ORR activity shown between the nanocrystal catalysts and extended single crystal surface of Pt3Ni alloys. The area-specific ORR activities of Pt3Ni catalysts at 0.9 V were 0.85 mA/cm2 Pt for the nanocubes, and 1.26 mA/cm2 Pt for the nanooctahedra. The ORR mass activity of the octahedral Pt3Ni catalyst reached 0.44 A/mg Pt. Pt-M (M = Au, Ni, Pd) alloy icosahedral nanocrystals was obtained based on CO assisted reduction methods. The area specific activity of icosahedral Pt3Ni catalysts (1.82 mA/cm2Pt) was about 50% higher than that of the octahedral (1.26 mA/cm2Pt), even though both shapes are bounded by {111} facets. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation and molecular dynamic simulation results showed that this improvement may come from strain-induced electronic effects. A quantitative surface segregation model on durability of bimetallic alloy ORR catalysts was established by studying the anisotropic diffusion coefficient, diffusion length and atomic size of non-platinum metals"--Pages v-vi.

Book excerpt: Bimetallic surfaces often possess catalytic properties that differ from those of their parent metals, often resulting in activities and/or selectivities higher than those achievable with a monometallic catalyst. In addition, it is possible that the properties of bimetallic catalysts can be tuned by controlling their composition. In a fuel cell, for example, modifying Pt with small amounts of Au has the ability to stabilize the Pt while maintaining the activity of unmodified Pt. However, while increasing the amount of Au improves the stability, it does so at the expense of the activity of the underlying Pt. A plethora of additional examples can be given, and it is the wide range of applications that these materials may impact that has been the driving force behind the study of their properties. One class of bimetallic catalysts that has received a great deal of attention is Pt modified by 3d transition metals. A novel low-temperature cyclohexene hydrogenation pathway was found on Ni-modified Pt. Specifically, subsurface Ni modification of Pt(111) resulted in the improved catalytic activity. In order to determine the driving force behind the improvement in activity on Pt-Ni-Pt(111), a study of the interaction of hydrogen and cyclohexene with these surfaces was performed. From these results it was hypothesized that a weaker hydrogen binding energy (HBE) and cyclohexene binding energy were responsible for the novel properties of the Pt-Ni-Pt(111) surface. However, results on Pt-Co-Pt(111) seemed to conflict with this hypothesis as this surface had a weaker HBE and cyclohexene BE than did Pt-Ni-Pt(111), yet the activity on Pt-Ni-Pt(111) remained higher. The aim of this work was to explain this apparent discrepancy. By extending the Ni and Co-modified Pt(111) results to Fe and Cu-modified Pt(111), a volcano plot was found that related hydrogenation activity to the binding energy of cyclohexene. Further, Pt-Ni-Pt(111) had a binding energy near the optimal value. Thus, while the binding energy of hydrogen and cyclohexene on Pt-Co-Pt(111) was lower than that on Pt-Ni-Pt(111), it was too low such that Co modification of Pt led to lower activity than Ni modification. A similar result held for the case of acrolein hydrogenation, for which it was found that Pt-Ni-Pt(111) also provided an optimal binding energy to promote hydrogenation. In addition to the obvious impact of these results, the ability to correlate hydrogenation activity to a value which can be determined from density functional theory calculations leaves open the possibility to predict a priori additional surfaces which may possess attractive catalytic properties. While these results were promising, it was important to determine if Pt surfaces more relevant to industrial catalysts possessed the same activity improvement through modification with Ni. To that end, the single crystal studies were extended to polycrystalline Pt. As on Pt(111), Ni modification of Pt foil increased the activity toward hydrogenation. However, it was found that subsurface Ni was not necessary to promote this reaction since the Ni-Pt-Pt foil surface was also active toward this pathway. This was hypothesized to be due to the decreased binding energy of cyclohexene on the Ni-Pt-Pt(100) facet, or due the ability of Ni to form an alloy with Pt defect sites at lower temperatures than on Pt(111). Thus, the importance of considering the effect of the presence of multiple crystal facets, step edges, grain boundaries, and other defects was demonstrated. While, it was found that subsurface Ni-modification of polycrystalline Pt was not necessary for the production of cyclohexane from cyclohexene, subsurface Ni was necessary for the production of benzene, which was attributed to the lower binding energy of the benzene intermediate on Pt-Ni-Pt foil. Similar results were found for the hydrogenation of acrolein on Nimodified Pt foil. Specifically, surface and subsurface Ni enhanced the C=C hydrogenation pathway while subsurface Ni was required to hydrogenate the C=O moiety. Finally, it was desired to utilize the Pt-like properties of WC to replace the bulk Pt in Pt-Ni-Pt to arrive at an analogous Pt-Ni-WC surface. The reaction pathways of cyclohexene and acrolein were studied on this surface with the result that the activities and selectivities for cyclohexene and acrolein hydrogenation were similar on the Pt-Ni-Pt and Pt-Ni-WC surfaces. This led to the conclusion that it may indeed be feasible to replace the bulk Pt while producing a cheaper, more stable alternative.

Book excerpt: Surface composition and structure are of vital importance for heterogeneous catalysts, especially for bimetallic catalysts, which often vary as a function of reaction conditions (known as surface segregation). The preparation of bimetallic catalysts with controlled metal surface composition and structure is very challenging. In this study, we synthesize a series of Ni/Pt bimetallic catalysts with controlled metal surface composition and structure using a method derived from surface organometallic chemistry. The evolution of the surface composition and structure of the obtained bimetallic catalysts under simulated reaction conditions is investigated by various techniques, which include CO-probe IR spectroscopy, high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, extended X-ray absorption fine structure analysis, X-ray absorption near-edge structure analysis, XRD, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It is demonstrated that the structure of the bimetallic catalyst is evolved from Pt monolayer island-modified Ni nanoparticles to core-shell bimetallic nanoparticles composed of a Ni-rich core and a Ni/Pt alloy shell upon thermal treatment. As a result, these catalysts are active for the dry reforming of methane, and their catalytic activities, stabilities, and carbon formation vary with their surface composition and structure.
