The site included a refuse pile occupying approximately 40 acres and a slurry lagoon complex of 50 acres. In the report, the characteristics and acid formation rate of the refuse pile are described. The average rate of acid formation for this refuse pile is 198 pounds of acidity, as CaCO3, per acre per day. Acid contribution from the slurry lagoons was not determined but appears to be negligible. As an abatement measure, a number of experimental vegetative covers were tested. Grass was successfully established with and without the use of topsoil, weathering well for one year. The long-term effects of establishing a grass cover directly on the refuse without the use of topsoil are not known at this time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basics of Metal Mining Influenced Water is a must-read for planners, regulators, consultants, land managers, students, researchers, or others concerned about the environmentally sound management of metal mine wastes and drainage quality. The first of a series of six handbooks on technologies for managing metal mine and metallurgical process draining, this book offers a unique, comprehensive perspective on the subject. Unlike other texts that focus primarily on acid drainage from coal mines, the authors examine both acidic and neutral pH waters that can be hazardous to the environment. Planning a new mine in today s increasingly contentious regulatory and political environment demands a different philosophy. Basics of Metal Mining Influenced Water takes an innovative, holistic approach by considering all aspects of the mine life cycle, including closure. Written by a team of experts from state and federal governments, academia, and the mining industry, Basics of Metal Mining Influenced Water also discusses the major physical and chemical relationships between mining, climate, environment, and mine waste drainage quality. The authors have included an extensive glossary defining hundreds of technical terms for easier reading and understanding.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mitigation of Metal Mining Influenced Water is the "how to fix it" volume in a series of six handbooks on technologies for managing metal mine and metallurgical process influenced water. Unlike other texts that focus exclusively on acid drainage from coal mines, this comprehensive series examines both acidic and neutral pH waters from metal mining and metallurgical processes that may impact the environment. The authors take a holistic approach by considering all aspects of the mine life cycle, from planning and design to closure. In this book you'll learn how mining influenced water concerns can be prevented or reduced by disrupting the geochemical relationship that contributes to the release of metals and/or acidity. Industry experts provide insights into understanding a mine's physical environment and how it can influence waste and drainage quality. They outline key issues designers must address, including involving stakeholders who may be affected long after the mine closes. Case histories offer valuable planning and design considerations by illustrating what works and what doesn't. You'll also benefit from a thorough examination of mitigating technologies in a host of mining and processing situations, as well as the latest arsenal of waste treatment options. Mitigation of Metal Mining Influenced Wateris a must-read for planners, regulators, consultants, land mangers, students, researchers, and others concerned about the environmentally sound management of metal mine and metallurgical processing wastes and drainage quality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Negative environmental events make the headlines. Mining industry examples are the recent incidents at Summitville, Colorado, US, and the cyanide leak at Cambria Resource's Omai Operation in Guyana. In this volatile atmosphere, the publication of the Mining Environmental Handbook comes at an opportune time. It presents an objective, comprehensive and integrated examination of the effects of mining on the environment, and the environmental laws that deal with mining. Though stressing activities in the United States of America, it covers all of North America. North American environmental standards are currently being exported around the world. Consequently, this handbook will be of prime interest in countries that are now coming to terms with mining environmentalism. It should benefit working engineers and environmentalists, manufacturers, legislators, regulators, financiers and journalists. It has been selected as a university textbook. Finally, it will be an indispensable reference during serious discussions about mining environmentalism. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: G. T. Goodman and M. J. Chadwick With the increasing pressure worldwide on mineral and fossil fuel resources, there is a growing awareness of the need to utilize all available workable deposits as thoroughly and effic iently as possible. This inevitably means disturbance, often of high quality environments. Adverse environmental impacts on land, water and air, and frequently to human health and biological resources, have been taking place for many years in different parts of the world. In total cycle of mineral extraction, trans portation use and disposal involves all compartments of the biosphere. The need to minimise these impacts by wise environ mental management has never been more important than it is today. There is great interest, therefore, in pooling our understanding of the scientific processes involved and our technical capability of dealing with these problems. Scientists and engineers who are expert in handling differ ent types of mineral process have much to learn from one another particularly when codes of practice from different countries in the field of land reclamation are compared. In order to illust rate the scientific and technical expertise required in the necessary detail it was deemed essential in this Advanced Study Institute to concentrate on specific case studies utilizing a range of actual sites. The examples of Coal, China Clay and Non ferrous Metals were chosen as displayed in the United Kingdom and Germany.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is not designed to be an exhaustive work on mine wastes. It aims to serve undergraduate students who wish to gain an overview and an understanding of wastes produced in the mineral industry. An introductory textbook addressing the science of such wastes is not available to students despite the importance of the mineral industry as a resource, wealth and job provider. Also, the growing imp- tance of the topics mine wastes, mine site pollution and mine site rehabilitation in universities, research organizations and industry requires a textbook suitable for undergraduate students. Until recently, undergraduate earth science courses tended to follow rather classical lines, focused on the teaching of palaeontology, cryst- lography, mineralogy, petrology, stratigraphy, sedimentology, structural geology, and ore deposit geology. However, today and in the future, earth science teachers and students also need to be familiar with other subject areas. In particular, earth science curriculums need to address land and water degradation as well as rehabili- tion issues. These topics are becoming more important to society, and an increasing number of earth science students are pursuing career paths in this sector. Mine site rehabilitation and mine waste science are examples of newly emerging disciplines. This book has arisen out of teaching mine waste science to undergraduate and graduate science students and the frustration at having no appropriate text which documents the scienti?c fundamentals of such wastes.
