Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part of Metals and Related Substances in Drinking Water Set - buy all five books together to save over 30%! This Code of Practice is concerned with metal pick-up by drinking water within the water supply chain, particularly from water mains and from domestic and institutional pipe-work systems. The principal metals of interest are copper, iron, and lead, and to a lesser extent nickel and zinc. The emphasis is on cold drinking water at its point of use by consumers. Metals arising from water sources and hot water systems are not considered. The intention is that this Code of Practice establishes an international standard for the control of internal corrosion of water supply systems. It provides a basis for identifying both problems and sustainable solutions in a manner which is sound scientifically and will help operators to achieve due diligence. It provides a template for improving internal corrosion control in countries, cities or towns where this has been neglected or poorly implemented. Internal Corrosion Control of Water Supply Systems is deliberately brief in its presentation of a wide array of complex information, in order to provide direction to practitioners that can be more easily related to their specific circumstances. The book also provides a series of check-lists and criteria to be used in risk assessment. Editor: Dr Colin R Hayes, University of Swansea, UK, Chair of IWA Specialist Group on Metals and Related Substances in Drinking Water.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The social importance and economic cost of water and sewage pipelines make it essential to maintain them in good working order. Corrosion is one of the most common factors in their alteration and possible, untimely destruction, but it can be prevented or controlled, usually at a relatively low cost. Based on an analysis of existing literature and a number of case studies, this document suggests a series of guidelines for effective corrosion control. Water treatment can play a key role in preventing or controlling internal pipe corrosion; the use of appropriate linings can protect metal components. Coatings or protective outer thin plastic sleeves can effectively guard pipelines against corrosion from external factors. Cathodic protection is also effective, but should be used only where required. New techniques are being developed for rehabilitating old pipelines to extend their functional life, thereby avoiding costly replacement. These processes require, however, a high level of expertise as well as specialized equipment; urban areas in developing countries with relatively newer and smaller pipeline networks and labor costs may therefore find rehabilitation to be a less cost-effective and attractive option.

Book excerpt: Discusses various factors responsible for internal corrosion of pipelines, which include corroding gases like O2, CO2, H2S; different types of bacteria; environmental factors such as temperature and pressure; aqueous chemistry including salinity, buffer ion concentration, ionic composition and pH; flow regimes in case of multiphase flow etc. Mechanisms, causes and effects have been explained in user-friendly language with apt case studies and examples. Internal corrosion of pipes in seawater environment is a very specific issue relevant to coastal, offshore and shipping industry. The options of corrosion resistant materials and corrosion control have been elaborated which can vary depending upon requirement of industry, temperature and flow conditions. Two types of pipeline systems are common to most chemical process industries, viz. cooling water and firewater. They are essential for efficient and safe operation of a chemical process plant. The environmental and flow conditions are different for these lines and unique corrosion control measures, including specific materials of construction, for these two categories of lines have been dealt in this book in separate chapters. A discussion on composite materials has also been included, which are fast emerging as corrosion resistant materials for several environments of pipelines. Corrosion control and monitoring go hand-in-hand and therefore, the aspect of corrosion monitoring and inspection has also been duly covered in this book. Finally, there is a chapter on holistic approach to handle corrosion through corrosion management tools. The chapters have been written by experts in the respective fields. Certainly, this book will be a treasure for all those involved with pipelines in variety of environments of various industries.

This book was released on 2009-11-19 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ductile iron pipe (DIP) was introduced about 50 years ago as a more economical and better-performing product for water transmission and distribution. As with iron or steel pipes, DIP is subject to corrosion, the rate of which depends on the environment in which the pipe is placed. Corrosion mitigation protocols are employed to slow the corrosion process to an acceptable rate for the application. When to use corrosion mitigation systems, and which system, depends on the corrosivity of the soils in which the pipeline is buried. The Bureau of Reclamation's specification for DIP in highly corrosive soil has been contested by some as an overly stringent requirement, necessitating the pipe to be modified from its as-manufactured state and thereby adding unnecessary cost to a pipeline system. This book evaluates the specifications in question and presents findings and recommendations. Specifically, the authoring committee answers the following questions: Does polyethylene encasement with cathodic protection work on ductile iron pipe installed in highly corrosive soils? Will polyethylene encasement and cathodic protection reliably provide a minimum service life of 50 years? What possible alternative corrosion mitigation methods for DIP would provide a service life of 50 years?

This book was released on 2016 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended to help oil and gas pipeline operators, corrosion professionals, integrity experts, and risk management practitioners assess, control, and manage the effects of internal corrosion on pipeline systems, thus improving the safety, reliability, and integrity of their operations. While the focus of this book is on pipelines, the content is broadly applicable to upstream equipment, processing facilities, mid-stream pipelines, liquid and gas storage assets, and delivery/distribution assets. This book not only provides technical information about internal corrosion control, but also provides suggestions and potential strategies for applying this information. The fundamental process of managing internal corrosion consists of threat assessment, mitigation selection and implementation, and monitoring the effectiveness of mitigation. This book is divided into these three main sections to help emphasize the point that corrosion management is a process, not a one-time event.
