Book Synopsis Computer-Aided Processes in Instruction and Research by : George C. Beakley
Download or read book Computer-Aided Processes in Instruction and Research written by George C. Beakley and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer-Aided Processes in Instruction and Research describes the course content, computer performance software developed, and the manner that they are used by each student during the design process. This book describes the database that is developed to further aid students who use the digital computer. Organized into 24 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the design of an aerospace vehicle. This text then explains the fundamentals of microcomputers and the use of computer-aided data acquisition in a mechanical measurements course. Other chapters provide a brief explanation for the heavy use of graphics, which is applied when comparing graphical input to numerical input. This book presents as well a summary of work on a project that combines computer-aided instruction (CAI) and artificial intelligence (AI). The final chapter deals with the establishment of a joint venture between universities and industry whereby the university utilizes equipment provided by industry to solve some of the existing problems. This book is a valuable resource for engineering students and practicing engineers.
Book Synopsis Information Technology in Health Science Education by : E. de Land
Download or read book Information Technology in Health Science Education written by E. de Land and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first volume is but an introduction to the growing use of computer-based systems in health-science education. It is unlikely that the intellectual or applied system constructs herein are either exhaustive of the field or immutable; growth is inevitable. For one thing, the field is still fractured and loosely organized, which is an inevitable description of an adolescent science in a rich mine of ideas. There is emerging, however, an organizing concept. A short look into the future indicates that educational system design will be dominated by a concept which, for want of a better term, we may call an "information system." Actually, this term de rives from an early New York World's Fair exhibition designed by Charles Eames entitled the "Informational Machine," in which the designer illustrated once again his insight into the future by showing how in a fundamental manner the digital computer promised to affect and to change our lives; and this change is by no means completed. Even during the publication of this volume, the basic sciences re quisite to the development of an information machine have evolved significantly. The three intellectual areas to watch are developments in artificial intelligence, graphics and man/machine interaction, and basic component and computer system design.

Book Synopsis The Social Impact of Computers by : Richard S. Rosenberg
Download or read book The Social Impact of Computers written by Richard S. Rosenberg and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Social Impact of Computers should be read as a guide to the social implications of current and future applications of computers. Among the basic themes presented are the following: the changing nature of work in response to technological innovation as well as the threat to jobs; personal freedom in the machine age as manifested by challenges to privacy, dignity, and work; the relationship between advances in computer and communications technology and the possibility of increased centralization of authority; and the emergence and influence of artificial intelligence and its role in decision-making, especially in military applications. The book begins with background and historical information on computers and technology. Separate chapters then cover major applications: business, medicine, education, government; major social issues, including crime, privacy, work; and new technologies and problems: industry regulation, electronic funds transfer systems, international competition, national industrial policies, robotics and industrial automation, productivity, the information society, videotex. The final chapter discusses issues associated with ethics and professionalism. The material presented should be accessible to most university students who have had an introductory course in computer science. Self taught or sufficiently motivated individuals who have gained an understanding of how computers operate should also profit from this book. Especially useful are backgrounds in sociology, economics, history, political science, or philosophy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The HIB 79 Congress is the second one organized by the European Federation for l-iedical Informatics (EFMI). The host society is the "Deutsche Gesellschaft fur l-ledizinische Dokurnentation, Informatik und Statistik (GMDS) who are holding their 24th annual meeting at this time. The program of MIB 79 covers every aspect of the application of information science to medicine and public health, and as such respresents the state of the art. Medical Informatics (M. I. ) is now at a turning pOint. To date, despite the efforts made by specialists in many countries, the balance sheet of M. I. remains rather poor. One of the reasons for this situation is the fact that the computers of yesterday were the prerogative of an elite of users. They were expensive, difficult to use, remot. e from the users, and mainly in the hands of a sacerdotal caste of data processing speciali sts • In the future, data processing facilities will be cheap, easy to handle, and immediately accessible. Data processing will have a chance of becoming truly democratic thanks to two important and complementary trends in computer technology: 1. a network due to computer communication partnership; 2. miniaturization due to the dramatic expansion of micro-processor and computer technology. IV The combination of these two main hardware achievements for which some neologisms have been invented - "compunication" \ in the USA and "telEnnatique" in France - will lead to a completely new way of processing data which may be called "distributed informatics.
