Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamics of Gas-Surface Scattering deals with the dynamics of scattering as inferred from known properties of gases and solids. This book discusses measurements of spatial distributions of scattered atomic and molecular streams, and of the energy and momentum which gas particles exchange at solid surfaces. It also considers two regimes of scattering, both of which are associated with a lower range of incident gas energies: the thermal and structure scattering regimes. Comprised of 10 chapters, this book opens with a brief historical overview of the early experiments that investigated the dynamics of scattering of gases by surfaces. The discussion then turns to some elements of the kinetic theory of gases; intermodular potentials and interaction regimes; and classical-mechanical lattice models used in gas-surface scattering theory. The applications of molecular beams to the study of gas-surface scattering phenomena are also described. The remaining chapters focus on experiments and theories on scattering of molecular streams by surfaces of solids, with emphasis on thermal and structure regimes of inelastic scattering; quantum theory of gas-surface scattering; and quantum mechanical scattering phenomena. This text concludes with an analysis of energy exchange processes that may occur when a solid surface is completely immersed in a still gas. This monograph will be a valuable resource for students and practitioners of physics, chemistry, and applied mathematics.

Book excerpt: This Grant permitted the initiation of a theoretical solid state physics group in the University of Virginia, which now consists of about seven faculty members. The program of Surface Physics which it was supposed to develop has really just started, but in a very promising way. Substantial and important contributions have been made to the theories of: magnetic and superconducting properties of solids; resonance elastic and inelastic scattering of light atoms from solid surfaces; and thermodynamics of surfaces. Work has progressed also on two other topics, although no substantial success has been achieved yet - namely, establishment of a bridge between quantum-mechanical theories of scattering of light gases from solid surfaces and the corresponding classical-mechanical theories for heavy gases; and, motion of defects in crystal lattices. Book excerpt: The aim of the book is to give a coherent and comprehensive account of quantum scattering theory with applications to atomic, molecular and nuclear systems. The motivation for this is to supply the necessary theoretical tools to calculate scattering observables of these many-body systems. Concepts which are seemingly different for atomic/molecular scattering from those of nuclear systems, are shown to be the same once physical units such as energy and length are diligently clarified. Many-body resonances excited in nuclear systems are the same as those in atomic systems and come under the name of Feshbach resonances. We also lean heavily on semi-classical methods to explain the physics of quantum scattering OCo especially the interference seen in the angle dependence of the cross section. Having in mind a wide readership, the book includes sections on scattering in two dimensions which is of use in surface physics. Several problems are also included at the end of each of the chapters.

Book excerpt: This volume is the proceedings of the Seventh Taniguchi International Sympo sium on the Theory of Condensed Matter. The symposium was held for five days from September 10 to 14, 1984 at Kashikojima, Mie, Japan. Dynamical proces ses and ordering on solid surfaces are the subjects of the symposium. About twenty participants stayed together at Shima Kanko Hotel, the symposium site, during the period. The intense and productive discussion in the bright sea s ide atmosphere of Kashi koj ima is bel i eved to have been impress i ve to all the participants. Dynamical processes on solid surfaces are the target of recent theoreti cal efforts in surface physics. Even if some of them are still in their in fant stage, important aspects begin to appear and vital concepts start to shape themselves. Some topics in the symposium were the energy transfer re lated with internal degrees of freedom of molecules, attempts to go beyond the trajectory approximati on, charge transfer and energy transfer between particles and solid surfaces, and related fundamental problems like adiaba tic potentials and electronic structures. In particular, really actively di scussed was the time-dependent Newns-Anderson model wi thout and wi th the intraatomic Coulomb interaction and sometimes with the interaction to the surface plasmons or phonons. Surface effects on the optical processes were discussed with great interest, such as the ABC-related problems of exciton polaritons and rare gas adsorbates on metal surfaces.

Book excerpt: This volume contains review articles which were written by the invited speak ers of the seventh International Summer Institute in Surface Science (ISISS), held at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee in July 1985. The form of ISISS is a set of tutorial review lectures presented over a one-week period by internationally recognized experts on various aspects of surface science. Each speaker is asked, in addition, to write a review article on his lecture topic. No single volume in the series Chemistry and Physics of Solid Surfaces can possibly cover the entire field of modern surface science. However, the series as a whole is intended to provide experts and students alike with a comprehensive set of reviews and literature references, particularly empha sizing the gas-solid interface. The collected articles from previous Summer Institutes have been published under the following titles: Surface Science: Recent Progress and Perspectives, Crit. Rev. Solid State Sci. 4, 125-559 (1974) Chemistry and Physics of Solid Surfaces, Vols. I, II, and III (CRC Press, Boca Raton, FL 1976, 1979 and 1982), Vols. IV and V, Springer Ser. Chern. Phys., Vols. 20 and 35, (Springer, Berlin, Heidelberg 1982 and 1984). The field of catalysis, which has provided the major impetus for the de velopment of modern surface science, lost two of its pioneers during 1984 and 1985: Professors G.-M. Schwab (1899-1984) and p.k. Emmett (1900-1985).

Book excerpt: The contributions that we have made during the grant period of DE-FG02-98ER45704 can be placed into six different categories: (1) advances in the Theory of Molecule-Surface Scattering, (2) advances in the Theory of Atom-Surface Scattering, (3) utilization of scattering theory to Extract Physical Information about Surfaces, (4) Gas-Surface Interactions, (5) Ion Scattering from surfaces and (6) Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM). These six topics are discussed below as individual listings under the title 'IV. Detailed description of research accomplishments'. These advances show that we have made significant progress on several scientific problems in atomic and molecular surface scattering during the course of this grant as well as contributions to other areas. It is also noted that this work, although fundamentally theoretical, is marked by its strong motivation to explain current experimental measurements. This was an important secondary goal in the proposed work. We have developed theory that is useful to experimentalists in the explanation and analysis of their experimental data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Activity in any theoretical area is usually stimulated by new experimental techniques and the resulting opportunity of measuring phenomena that were previously inaccessible. Such has been the case in the area under consideration here beginning about fifteen years ago when the possibility of studying chemical reactions in crossed molecular beams captured the imagination of physical chemists, for one could imagine investigating chemical kinetics at the same level of molecular detail that had previously been possible only in spectroscopic investigations of molecular stucture. This created an interest among chemists in scattering theory, the molecular level description of a bimolecular collision process. Many other new and also powerful experimental techniques have evolved to supplement the molecular beam method, and the resulting wealth of new information about chemical dynamics has generated the present intense activity in molecular collision theory. During the early years when chemists were first becoming acquainted with scattering theory, it was mainly a matter of reading the physics literature because scattering experiments have long been the staple of that field. It was natural to apply the approximations and models that had been developed for nuclear and elementary particle physics, and although some of them were useful in describing molecular collision phenomena, many were not. The most relevant treatise then available to students was Mott and Massey's classic The Theory of Atomic Collisions, * but, as the title implies, it dealt only sparingly with the special features that arise when at least one of the collision partners is a molecule.
