Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions to the Pathology and Practice of Surgery To my old pupils, I trust that the recollections awakened by perusing the memorials of subjects in which we felt a common interest, will not be nu pleasing; and to other practitioners, I venture to hope it may be satisfactory to see fully stated, facts and principles which have perhaps reached them only through the imperfect and perverting channels of Compendiums or Manuals - the parents no less than the offspring of mediocrity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Surgical Pathology and Therapeutics No young practitioner can be regarded as thoroughly equipped for surgical work who is not both a good pathologist and an expert bacteriologist. The confidence born of a knowledge of Pathology and Bacteriology enables him to assume grave responsibilities and to grapple successfully with the most complicated problems. It is from men thus equipped that we have a right to hope that the future masters of surgery are to be evolved. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science and Practice of Dental Surgery IN submitting this work to my colleagues in the Dental Profession, I feel that a few intro ductory remarks may not be out of place. Dental Surgery has advanced so rapidly Within recent years, both in the many branches of science on which it is based and in the intricacies of manipu lative procedure, that the production of a new comprehensive work by a single writer has become almost an impossibility. Certain defects are usually associated with, if not necessarily inherent in, a'work by many writers, and one object that I have had in mind, from the commencement of the long period during which the work has been as continuously in hand as the demands of other duties permitted, has been to eliminate these defects as far as possible. I have endeavoured to impart unity of conception and style to the whole, and to prevent overlapping except where it seemed permissible that a particular subject should be presented from different points of view. Cross-references have been liberally inserted. Another object that I have had in view has been to combine the scientific with the practical, for neither is of much value to the practitioner without the other, and in a work of this kind it is desirable that their mutual interdependence should be brought prominently before the reader. The work does not represent any particular school of thought; the contributors belong not only to the United Kingdom but to the most distant parts of the Dominions beyond the Seas, and an effort has been made to include everything in pathology or practice, from whatever country or source, that might be of value to the modern practitioner. Obsolete theories in pathology or abandoned methods of treatment have been omitted, or only briefly referred to where their historical interest is great. In all these objects I have been well supported by my contributors, and I wish to take this opportunity of thanking them most sincerely for the careful way in which they have considered the principles laid down, and written their chapters in conformity with the scheme that I outlined; and also for allowing me so much freedom in making such alterations as I thought necessary in the interest of uniformity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim (1493-1541), commonly called Paracelsus, was both one of the most original medical thinkers of the sixteenth century and was the man who made opium (as laudanum), arsenic, copper sulphate, iron, lead, mercury, potassium sulphate, and sulphur part of the pharmacopoeia. A man of many parts, but a pioneer chemist, Paracelsus can be regarded as the originator of a body of work which was the precursor of chemical pharmacology and therapeutics. To no small extent he stands, therefore, as a father figure of the modern pharmaceutical industry. Today's physician who wants to look at that industry since the days of Paracelsus and weigh the great gains against the problems soon encounters difficulties. To diminish them, this Enquiry approaches its subject from historical principles. This gives increased perspective to questions asked late in the boo- these questions being prompted by medical practice outside the industry and some twenty years of drug development activity within it. In antiquity medicines often seem to have been used as part of magic and primitive man thought disease to be due to supernatural forces which he could influence. The legacy remains - and in trying to sort out what is rational in our use of drugs today we have to separate our small bits of science from the ancient magic and from modern commercial pressures and conditioning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to describe in detail a community of potters working for the Jagannatha Temple in Puri, and to explore how the role of temple servant affects the potters' understanding of their work and of themselves. As a pilgrimage centre of national importance, supported by the patronage of successive regional dynasties and by fervent popular belief, the Jagannatha Temple requires earthenware in great quantities for the creation and distribution of the sacred food that is an integral feature of daily ritual and pilgrimage. Three hundred potters participate as temple servants in maintaining the temple's ritual cycle by performing their divinely assigned task. This study, conducted in 1979-1981, observes the potters' technical prowess, sustained by devotion, but also examines the tensions within their relationships to more powerful temple servants and authorities. The role of the potter as temple servant is at once glorious, as demonstrated by texts and personal interpretations of the potters' divinely-appointed service, and pathetic, as shown in the brutality of caste-based hierarchy and cash-based exchange penetrating the modern temple's daily operations.
