Book Synopsis Amazonia: Landscape and Species Evolution by : Carina Hoorn
Download or read book Amazonia: Landscape and Species Evolution written by Carina Hoorn and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-09-26 with total page 869 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book focuses on geological history as the critical factor in determining the present biodiversity and landscapes of Amazonia. The different driving mechanisms for landscape evolution are explored by reviewing the history of the Amazonian Craton, the associated sedimentary basins, and the role of mountain uplift and climate change. This book provdes an insight into the Meso- and Cenozoic record of Amazonia that was characterized by fluvial and long-lived lake systems and a highly diverse flora and fauna. This fauna includes giants such as the ca. 12 m long caiman Purussaurus, but also a varied fish fauna and fragile molluscs, whilst fossil pollen and spores form relics of ancestral swamps and rainforests. Finally, a review the molecular datasets of the modern Amazonian rainforest and aquatic ecosystem, discussing the possible relations between the origin of Amazonian species diversity and the palaeogeographic, palaeoclimatic and palaeoenvironmental evolution of northern South America. The multidisciplinary approach in evaluating the history of Amazonia has resulted in a comprehensive volume that provides novel insights into the evolution of this region.
Book Synopsis The Geology of the Guiana Shield by : Allan K. Gibbs
Download or read book The Geology of the Guiana Shield written by Allan K. Gibbs and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1993 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Guiana Shield is an area of special importance, especially to those concerned with Precambrian geology because it provides a perspective on a part of Earth history not well represented elsewhere. For economic geologists, its mineral resource potential is just beginning to be understood. This overview of current knowledge will greatly help geologists already working in the area, draw attention to the need for mineral exploration research, and encourage the inclusion of the Shield in future Precambrian studies.

Book Synopsis Suriname Revisited: Economic Potential of its Mineral Resources by : Marco Keersemaker
Download or read book Suriname Revisited: Economic Potential of its Mineral Resources written by Marco Keersemaker and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-28 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book summarizes the exploration history and provides a framework for assessing the economic potential of the country’s minerals by defining minimal deposit parameters for the various commodities present. Suriname was explored extensively for mineral occurrences in the course of the previous century, indicating the presence of a range of commodities. The country mined and processed bauxite for a century (until 2016), and has an even longer history of small-scale alluvial gold mining; it is currently home to two major gold producers. However, exploration activities have been limited during the past 4 decades as most parts of Suriname’s interior are difficult to access, making geological fieldwork both difficult and expensive. Further, the markets and prices have changed in the interim, which calls for a fresh look at the historic data.
Book Synopsis Field Guide to the Birds of Suriname by : Arie L. Spaans
Download or read book Field Guide to the Birds of Suriname written by Arie L. Spaans and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-11-01 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Suriname, located on the Atlantic coast of northeastern South America, is a relatively small country compared to most other South American countries. It nevertheless has a rich avifauna. By the end of 2017, 751 species (including 765 subspecies) were known to occur in Suriname. Most of the land area of Suriname is still covered with tropical rainforest and the country should be a must-visit for birdwatchers. Suriname is even mentioned as being the best country to spot certain neotropical species. Surprisingly, few birders visit Suriname. The main reason given is the lack of a handy pocket guide that can easily be carried in a backpack. This (revised and updated) edition of the Field Guide to the Birds of Suriname (with its 109 color plates) tries to fill this gap. In addition to species accounts, data on topography, climate, geology, geomorphology, biogeography, avifauna composition, conservation, and hotspots for bird watching are given. So, why delay your trip to this beautiful and friendly country any longer? Suriname with its rich avifauna awaits you!
