Book excerpt: Stuart Struever's excavation of the Kuhne site, located in the Upper Illinois River Valley occurred during the start of archaeological interest in the region. The faunal remains recovered during this excavation offer a unique opportunity to understand subsistence strategies in the area during the Middle Woodland period. Using standard zooarchaeological methods, these remains were analyzed to better understand which animal species were targeted by Middle Woodland people in this region, which season(s) the site was occupied, and how bones were modified for utilitarian and other purposes. These findings were then compared to faunal assemblages from Middle Woodland sites in the Central and Lower Illinois River Valley, the Rench and Apple Creek sites respectively, to see how the Kuhne site's subsistence strategy relates to other sites, as well as to acquire a more comprehensive understanding of the subsistence strategy for the entire Illinois River Valley. The site comparisons are followed by a discussion of changes in methodology and Stuart Struever's contributions in archaeology and zooarchaeology, specifically the development of flotation samples.

Book excerpt: Fourteen experts examine the current state of Central Valley prehistoric research and provide an important touchstone for future archaeological study of the region The Mississippi Valley region has long played a critical role in the development of American archaeology and continues to be widely known for the major research of the early 1950s. To bring the archaeological record up to date, fourteen Central Valley experts address diverse topics including the distribution of artifacts across the landscape, internal configurations of large fortified settlements, human-bone chemistry, and ceramic technology. The authors demonstrate that much is to be learned from the rich and varied archaeological record of the region and that the methods and techniques used to study the record have changed dramatically over the past half century. Operating at the cutting edge of current research strategies, these archaeologists provide a fresh look at old problems in central Mississippi Valley research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "For the First Nations of North America, foot trails long provided the main source of transportation behind rivers and the ocean, with individual trails stretching far beyond each tribe's ancestral homeland. In the upper Illinois River Valley and greater Siskiyou Mountains, trails supported complex groups of 'hunter-gatherer-fishers' long before the arrival of gold seeking 'whites'. Modern tribes operating today include the Karuk Tribe, individual member tribes of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians and Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, Tolowa Dee-ni' Nation, Yurok Tribe, The Klamath Tribes and others. This thesis serves to identify and interpret ancestral travel routes in the Siskiyou Mountains, with a focus on the Illinois River Valley, situated along the border of southwestern Oregon and northwestern California. By combining archaeological evidence with archival based research, the study seeks to better understand the relationship of trails to the (pre)history of modern tribes, and the contribution ancestral trails played in the rapid development of southern Oregon and northern California. Indian trails described in the written records of fur trappers and explorers were utilized in the colonization and settlement of North America. Indian trails served as the primary routes fur trappers... used to explore the region. This thesis presents evidence of early settlers and gold miners using Indian trails to develop their first settlements and mining camps, improving them for use by pack animals and wagon trains to supply a growing population of immigrants flooding into Indian Territory."--adapted from leaf 3.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archaeological sites throughout southern Illinois provide a chronicle of the varying ways people have lived in that area during the past 10,000 years. This book focuses on the results of a five-year archaeological investigation in a 143-acre area known as the Carrier Mills Archaeological District. This area, rich in archaeological treasures, offers many keys to the prehistoric people of southern Illinois. Archaeologists in this study have sought to learn the ages of the various prehistoric occupations represented at the sites; to better understand the technology and social organization of these prehistoric people; to collect information about diet, health, and physical characteristics of the prehistoric inhabitants; and to investigate the remains of the 19th-century Lakeview settlement.
