This book was released on 2021-12-13 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clifford K. Madsen's Contributions to Music Education and Music Therapy: Love of Learning summarizes the life and work of Dr. Clifford Madsen, a luminary in music education and author of a dozen books, the first recipient of the Senior Researcher Award from the Music Educators National Conference, and mentor and teacher to generations of music educators and music therapists. This text presents Madsen's philosophy, career, and legacy through an exploration of primary sources and extensive interviews with former students, outlining the philosophical tenets Madsen espouses while contextualizing those tenets within his teachings, research, and service. What began as an exercise to record Madsen's work for archival purposes resulted in a study of how his philosophy manifested in a significant offering to music educators. Throughout a prolific academic career, Dr. Madsen has led Florida State University to a position of preeminence in the fields of music education and music therapy. Yet as detailed here, his greatest impact goes beyond lesson plans and syllabi, epitomized by a love of learning. As Bob Duke stated, What is monumental about Cliff is not what he has written. It is what he has done as a human being for other human beings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As music educators continue to explore various ways of learning and teaching popular music, recognizing and understanding a blend of traditional and non-traditional pedagogies that engage teachers and learners in authentic practices is of vital importance. To meet this emerging need, Action-based Approaches in Popular Music Education delves into the practices and philosophies of 26 experienced music educators who understand both the how and the why of popular music education. This edited collection represents the variety, the diversity, and the multiplicity of ideas and approaches to the teaching and learning of popular music. It’s these actionable approaches, practices, applications, lessons, and ideas that will enable music educators to understand how to better incorporate popular music into their teaching. This book is not an antidote to the lack of uniformity in popular music education – it is a celebration of it.

Book excerpt: Inquiry in Music Education: Concepts and Methods for the Beginning Researcher, Second Edition, introduces research and scholarship in music education as an ongoing spiral of inquiry. Exploring research conventions that are applicable beyond music to the other arts and humanities as well, it offers a sequential approach to topic formulation, information literacy, reading and evaluating research studies, and planning and conducting original studies within accepted guidelines. Following the legacy begun by Edward Rainbow and Hildegard C. Froehlich, this book expands what is meant by music education and research, teaching tangible skills for music educators with diverse instructional goals and career aspirations. The second edition addresses the changes in methods due to technological advances, a proliferation of new scholarship, and an awareness of the impact of place and culture on researchers and research participants. This edition features: the most current information on research tools, strategies to remain up-to-date, and expanded supplemental online materials (see inquiryinmusiceducation.com) case studies that reflect recent research and discuss issues of gender, race, and culture previously absent from mainstream scholarship an acknowledgment of the assessment demands of contemporary K-12 schooling a chapter devoted to mixed methods, arts-based, and practitioner inquiry assignments and other resources designed to be friendly for online course delivery chapters from contributing authors Debbie Rohwer and Marie McCarthy, bringing additional depth and perspective. Inquiry in Music Education provides students with the language, skills, and protocols necessary to succeed in today’s competitive markets of grant writing, arts advocacy, and public outreach as contributing members of the community of music educators.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is part of a national campaign for music education that aims to focus the nation's attention on the pressing need to include music and the other arts at the center of the school curriculum. The credo of this campaign is, "Just as there can be no music without learning, no education is complete without music." The meaning of this credo is spelled out in this report through a four-part argument. In chapter 1, "Our Culture Is Dying," the contention is made that through inattention to music and the other arts in schools, the nation is dehumanizing its own people--and particularly the children--not by design but by default. It is argued that music has intrinsic value for the learner, and that a knowledge of music is essential to an educated human being. In chapter 2,"Education Without Music," evidence is explored that music education is being pushed to the periphery in schools. Chapter 3, "Education With Music," underscores two areas of interest: first, the new, pathbreaking areas of research on the nature of intelligence and brain function that are linked to music; and second, the significant contributions that music education can make to all of education beyond its intrinsic value. Finally, in chapter 4, "Making It Happen: Mounting a National Effort," there is discussion of ways of putting the credo to work, including linking the benefits of music education to a national advocacy effort to bring music and the other arts to their basic role in U.S. education. Two appendices are included: list of witnesses before the National Commission on Music Education, and a list of endorsing and supporting organizations. (DB)
