Book excerpt: This work intent to give an introduction to the basic principles and concepts of geology for all those are interested in the understanding and learn about all the processes and phenomena that formed and shaped the Earth, since its formation, around 4,800 million years before present (BP). Early geologists, makes its task of studying and interpreting these processes, contributed to display the history of the planet and the origin of the life. Their work were the basis for future generations of scientists deepened and made new discoveries that contributed in the understanding of our planet and give a new view about its formation. Thanks to all these discoveries, geologists were able to put all the pieces together and understand all the processes that contributed to the formation of the South American continent that began in the first moments of the formation of the Earths crust 3,800 million years BP. This book, compile the geological history of the continent into a single text, while pointing out new aspects that were not covered at first.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces selected contributions from the GEGAL (Spanish acronym for Latin American Geoarchaeological Studies Group) Workshop held at La Paloma Beach, Uruguay, with a focus on Coastal Geoarchaeology, and an attendance of more than 50 researchers, students and professionals from several Latin American countries. The contributions were selected in order to encompass the vast array of environmental, geomorphological and archaeological contexts comprised in the geographical frame of Latin America. Topics covered through the chapters include specific issues such as human occupation and fluvial dynamic processes in mountain and lowland environments, methodological developments in dating methods, taphonomy and chemical proxies, as well as landscape modification by anthropogenic disturbances. As the first compilation of Coastal Geoarchaeology for Latin America, this book is intended to become a useful tool for students, researchers and professionals from related fields, as it comprises not only the regional state of the art, but also new insights and developments which can be potentially applied to other contexts world wide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book discusses geoscience issues in Peru from a geoethical perspective, based on the leading experience of the Peruvian section of the International Association for Promoting Geoethics, in its seven years of activity. The introduction will present past and current activities to promote geoethics in Peru, such as the organization of the MinerLima exhibition (that has teaching purposes); the implementation of geoethics in georisk communication with vulnerable populations, as well as the promotion of adequate knowledge about national geological heritage. The other chapters will describe the main geoethical issues in Peru, related to georisk management and communication, mining, paleontology and geoheritage, geoducation. Some proposals for actions that should be taken to improve societal awareness and to make progress in problem-solving from a geoethical perspective will be discussed for each issue. In the final chapter Peruvian geoescience implications and new roles for geoscientists will be discussed, providing clues to their participation in the management of socio-environmental problems that affect Latin American region. It will be also underlined how geoethics represents a new theoretical and practical approach that may contribute in the current process to modernize geoscience education in Latin America. In this sense, this publication provides a solid base to apply the theoretical framework of Geoethics in Peru that may be suggested as an example to promote geoethics in other Latin American countries. As a result, the need to inform and prepare the population of growing countries such as Peru to face the problems of the modern world is evident. In order to attract more readers in Latin America, each chapter will be provided with a summary in Spanish.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of the geological evolution of the Northern Andes and contiguous shield areas, with a focus upon Colombia. Updated geological interpretations are supported by modern lithogeochemical, seismic, gravity and magnetic data and radiogenic isotope and radiometric age determinations. The composite data permits a detailed interpretation of the tectono-magmatic history of the Northern Andean Block, including the Andes of Colombia, northern Ecuador, western Venezuela and eastern Panamá. Tectonic reconstructions based upon characterization of more than thirty litho-tectonic and morpho-structural units, terrane assemblages and tectonic realms, and their bounding suture and fault systems, highlight the intimate and complementary Mesozoic-Cenozoic history of the Northern Andean Block and the Pacific and Caribbean Plates. The complex nature of Northern Andean assembly contrasts with ‘‘classical’’ Central Andean ‘‘Cordilleran-type’’ orogenic models. Differences render the application of typical Cordilleran-type models inappropriate for the Colombian Andes. The importance of underlying Proterozoic through mid-Mesozoic elements, in the development of Meso-Cenozoic Northern Andean orogeny-phase tectonic configurations is analyzed in the light of spatial-temporal studies and reconstructions related to basin formation, sedimentation, deformation, uplift mechanisms, structural style and magmatic evolution. The pre-Andean architecture of north western South America has played a pre-determinative role in the development of the Northern Andean orogenic system. 16 contributions analyze key stratigraphic, structural, metamorphic, magmatic and tectonic questions, and provide solutions as far as the most recent published field-based studies permit. The volume provides geological interpretations and tectonic models which contrast with repetitive theoretical proposals frequently found in the available literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents varied geomorphological topics and planetary studies from different geomorphological regions analysed by young researchers from Latin America, from Costa Rica to southern Argentina, from the mountains to the oceans, and from the Caribbean to the Scotia tectonic plates. The six chapters included in this book originate from presentations made during the “IAG Central and South American Webinar” carried on in March 2021 for the commemoration of the “Geomorphology Week”, promoted by the International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG) and coordinated by the invited book editors. The chapters develop topics related to landforms and geomorphological processes originated by modern tectonics along a transform tectonic plate boundary, by cryo-snowy environments in the drier Central Andes, by fluvial and littoral processes in the Brazilian inland and the Atlantic coast, and by high runoff generated by storm-cells driving into mountainous and wooded terrains. New insights on Mars water features research are also included in the book. Several chapters refer to risk assessment for society or resource management considerations; other chapters refer to present or recent geomorphological processes but others do so to those developed in the Quaternary.
