Book excerpt: L'étude de l'interaction des ions multichargés avec un solide, à une énergie cinétique inferieure à celle des électrons dans la matière, a été permise avec l'apparition des sources EBIS et ECR. Un ion se neutralise d'abord en capturant à distance de la surface (à échelle atomique) un grand nombre d'électrons des bandes électroniques du solide dans ses états de Rydberg. Il forme un atome creux qui décline par effet Auger. Au contact de la surface, l'ion est reionisé et commence une seconde phase de neutralisation rapide en dessous de la surface, conduisant à la formation d'un deuxième type d'atome creux. Cette thèse démontre le rôle essentiel du contact, et la forte influence de la nature chimique de la surface et de ses propriétés physiques sur l'interaction. Elle montre que l'interaction des ions Ar 1 7 + est différente sur un conducteur et un isolant, et qu'il existe des nuances entre les différents conducteurs et isolants. Elle montre que l'interaction est différente entre deux variétés allotropiques du carbone (graphite et diamant). Elle démontre aussi que la surface évolue sous irradiation, changeant la nature de l'interaction (graphitisation du diamant). Ces études sont réalisées grâce aux photons émis par les ions et les surfaces. Pour la première fois, les raies L des ions Ar 9 IS 1 2 IS 1 6 IS 1 7 + sont observées avec un détecteur à jonction, ainsi que la raie k du carbone induite par l'interaction des ions Ar 1 6 IS 1 7 +. Cette thèse démontre que ces photons proviennent d'échanges de charge entre ces ions et la première couche atomique du solide. Elle met aussi en évidence un processus similaire, mais de faible probabilité, pour des ions Ar 1 6 IS 1 7 + sur SI. Cette thèse ouvre une voie nouvelle dans l'étude de l'interaction des ions lents multichargés avec des surfaces, en démontrant le rôle des effets pré-collisionnels dans la première couche atomique qui fixe les conditions initiales de la neutralisation à l'intérieur du solide
